Two Saturday’s ago, the streets of Downtown Tehachapi were filled with patrons at Main Street Tehachapi’s Annual Ugly Sweater Wine Walk. The fundraiser, which invites attendees to walk through our thriving downtown area and sample wine and food from local businesses, sold nearly 500 tickets and was a huge success. Reports from local businesses also drew praise for the number of visitors and new residents that were enjoying the festivities. They found this out because in typical Teh...
Sometimes we all just need a little reassurance in our lives. This past week those of us at City Hall and in the community got that reassurance with the results of our City election and the opening of our new hospital. In government, as well as in many of our personal lives, we certainly don't hear enough of the positive feedback. It's the naysayers that command attention, they often times have the loudest voice, spin the most lavish tales and are the first to find fault in every situation. I'm...
It is important both in our personal and professional lives to really focus on what matters. Often we're distracted with the imperfections around us, the bumps in the road, the details of the journey, that we forget about the moments, the defining moments that make us, that make our community. In our personal lives those moments could be things like our first day of school, our first car, first job. Graduating high school, leaving for college, marriage; all these moments woven together provide...
The industrial revolution changed the habitation patterns of the world. Rural residents needed to live around cities where the jobs and services were located. As we continue along in today's technical revolution, the pace of technology is shifting those patterns once again. Transportation, the internet and new business practices allow residents to commute to their jobs from further distances. Many can telecommute and have the ability to work from essentially anywhere. That advancement of...
Public hearings for draft environmental report due summer 2019 Piece by piece, elements of the massive California High-Speed Rail (HSR) project are falling into place as planners move ahead like the tenacious tortoise who prevailed over the overconfident and dismissive hare. In this case, the hare is the portion of the population of California whose favorite word for the project is "boondoggle." The tortoise keeps moving steadily ahead. "There are 120 miles [of track] under construction and 21...
Thanks to a robust economy, a business-friendly climate and the desirability of Tehachapi, our Downtown is operating at full strength. Buildings that sat vacant due to a variety of factors will be unoccupied no more. The old Ace Hardware building at 228 Tehachapi Blvd. is currently being renovated to serve as company headquarters for World Wind and Solar. The design is impressive and will offer a welcome gateway to Downtown. Meanwhile across the street, the former lumber shed and bulk yard is...
It's been hard to miss, but healthcare options in Tehachapi over the last three years have increased significantly. By the end of this year, residents will have at their fingertips, the best care in the history of the Tehachapi Valley. Yes, it has been that type of transformation, a transformation that started with a leap of faith. First, it was the approval of the bond measures to finance the construction of the new hospital. That building attracted a new partner a year ago in Adventist...
Tehachapi's 8th year for National Night Out took place at Central Park Aug. 7. The event is held yearly as a means to introduce the public to the men and woman who work as First Responders. On hand were Kern County Fire, Tehachapi Police Dept., Kern County Sheriff, Kern County Search and Rescue and Hall Ambulance. In addition, many of these safety organizations had representatives from their auxiliary organizations on hand to answer questions and hand out safety information. Tehachapi Police...
The business of the City isn't always conducted at City Hall or City Council meetings. Matter of fact, much of what is done to benefit the citizens and the community is conducted at a variety of meetings and networking opportunities, many that take place right here in Tehachapi. Take emergency preparedness and response for example. Just last week the Kern Operational Area Advisory Committee met at the Tehachapi Police Department as first responders and Kern County Emergency Operations Center sta...
Craig Stewart, Senior Supervisor for Eleven Western Builders, Inc. pulled the final permit for the construction of the Tehachapi Walmart on July 25 at City Hall. Mayor Pro tem Susan Wiggins was on hand along with Developmental Services Director Jay Schlosser. The almost foot-high roll of plans for the project was ceremoniously returned to Stewart stamped with the approval of the City Planning Department. Stewart said that he spent the last year in Ridgecrest where he supervised the building of...
History is chalked full of examples where areas of opportunity attracted a generation of opportunists. There was the "New World" that sparked explorers to take to the seas, then came the push west and our "Manifest Destiny" that attracted pioneers to hitch wagons and settle in homesteads and new communities west of the Mississippi River. There were gold rushes in California and Alaska, silver rushes in Arizona and Nevada and a host of other happenings that attracted those that were always...
I hoped the community enjoyed the All American 4th of July Festival and the Fireworks Spectacular hosted by the City of Tehachapi. It has become a marquee event for our community and it attracts visitors from all over, especially as many surrounding municipalities no longer provide such festivities on our Independence Day. I couldn't help but be very proud of our town, our citizens and our country this past 4th of July. We really are blessed to not only live in this Nation, but in this...

In the front row are Tiny Miss Tehachapi Kylee Girvan, Teeny Tiny Miss Tehachapi Yatzil Escobar, Young Preteen Earth Kern County Deanna Vidales and Young Miss Tehachapi Earth Eva Vidales....
Tehachapi's got talent. No that isn't the name of a new variety show for network television, although I do believe we could fill a few hours of air time with some folks in our community, but that's another story. Our talent is our workforce, the people we supply to companies both in and out of the area. Those people who choose to make a career in the private sector in several industries that surround our community. These businesses invest millions in talent attraction efforts, bonuses, stipends...
Excitement was on overload as Tehachapi 4th and 5th graders were treated to a rewarding rocket launch day May 30 at the Tehachapi Municipal Airport. Their model rockets were launched amid loud cheers. Sponsored by Arts Science & Technology (AST), the Intermediate Space Challenge (ISC) is a program that provides model rocket kits for the students to build in their classrooms. This helps teach kids about the science involved in rocketry. Kids get the experience of building a small rocket to be...
When Claudia White, owner of The Loop Newspaper, asked me to write my column about Mayor Ed Grimes, I knew that other columns and news stories would have already been written and published. None of us like "old news" so I wasn't sure how I could do that, but then I remembered that all I had to do was write about my friend of 15 years. You can call it "...the rest of the story," I suppose. I first met Ed and his wife Ruthie when I decided I wanted to serve on the Tehachapi Recreation and Parks...
Last week we said goodbye to our friend and Mayor Ed Grimes. We closed a historic chapter in our City's history in which Ed played an integral part, we'll continue to think of him, his family and the fingerprints he left on our community for many years to come. They say heroes are remembered, but legends never die. I think that applies to Mayor Ed Grimes. With our goodbyes said, we in City Hall now must move forward with our City business. It's a necessity for the people and our duty as public...
The Tehachapi City Council had the sad duty of deciding how to deal with the council vacancy created by the death of Mayor Ed Grimes. Essentially they had two choices, to appoint a replacement to fill the position until the November election when a new council member can be elected to fill the remaining two years of Mayor Grimes term. Not appointing someone to fill the vacancy would leave the Council with four members and the possible inability to pass some measures for lack of a majority vote....
Community mourns Mayor Ed Grimes...
At 1:45 p.m., on Monday, May 20, 2018, Tehachapi lost one of its most vocal champions when Mayor Ed Grimes passed away, surrounded by his large and loving family. Despite serving as a member of the Tehachapi City Council since January 2003, Ed often described himself as "the voice of the Warriors". It was evidence of his intense commitment to the Tehachapi community and especially its youth. In addition to working with the football team and the Warrior Boosters, Mayor Grimes utilized the $300...
The Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District survey taken to gather public response to a proposed general obligation bond found that the crucial threshold of 2/3 "yes" votes may be attainable. T The survey company recommended that the district consider placing a bond measure on the Nov. 2018 ballot. The Rec & Park board of directors would need to pass a resolution by Aug. 10 to qualify for the Nov. 6 ballot. The final tally of "yes" responses in the 400-person survey was 63.5 percent, with...
Each great City department requires a dedicated leader and team willing to follow that direction, which is the case with our very own Tehachapi Police Department. Brought back on line in 2007, the department has continued to evolve with the opening of the station on West C Street and the hiring of Chief Kent Kroeger in 2014, as well as the reorganization of communications and dispatch from a contract to in-house operation in 2016. Most recently the City streamlined our after-hours public works...
It was a great turn out at McMullan Hall for the 32nd Annual Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast on May 3 as speaker Daryl Ragsdale, business development director for World Wind & Solar, shared his compelling story of faith. "It was the picture of unity, of believers and others coming together for a common purpose," Ragsdale told The Loop. The event, he said, "highlights the importance of the power of prayer." Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast Chairman Don Bowman, a retired Salvation Army officer, said the...
SB 54 prohibits police, sheriff deputies from cooperating on most ICE actions Law enforcement jurisdictions in the Greater Tehachapi area are upholding the California state law that prohibits them from assisting federal authorities in most illegal immigration enforcement activities. "It's not a big problem. It's no problem at all," Tehachapi Chief of Police Kent Kroeger said to Forde Files. "There is extensive policy regarding immigration violation. If there is a request for information from...
