I am often amazed at the quality of work performed by the employees here at the City of Tehachapi. The work required in several departments is performed on a daily basis by educated and talented individuals that keep the City running. One of the more important areas is our water and wastewater operations. For you, the residents, you expect clean water to be in the tap, and wastewater to leave your homes and businesses in the City sewer system. One of the many tasks of a full-service City like...
The Coffee with the Mayor and City Manager will meet at The Coffee Mill on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 a.m. Mayor Ed Grimes says, "the conversations we have each month show the importance of meeting with our residents and business owners in a casual setting. There have been questions regarding business, non profit organizations, and quality of life issues." Both Mayor Grimes and Tehachapi City Manager Greg Garrett attend the monthly community gathering held on the third Thursday of the month to...
Tehachapi's Freedom Plaza and Visitor's Center, already a recipient of three regional awards by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Council for Engineering Companies, was recognized on March 23 with another award at the State level. "The American Society of Civil Engineers is both the largest and most prestigious civil engineering group in the United States. This award from Region 9 of the ASCE represents the highest award in our category for the State of California. The...
Recently the Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance, in which Tehachapi is a proud member/investor, held their 2018 Economic Outlook Conference. Adam Fowler, the Director of Research and an economist for Beacon Economics out of Los Angeles, gave the keynote address. As many others have recently, he addressed "fake news" when it comes to the economy. There is no such thing as "Republican" or "Democratic" economic news, it's all one market supported by real data. For example, unlike the...
Tehachapi resident Stephen Schrepfer, owner of Think Green Pedicabs, brought one of his units to the April 4 GTEDC meeting. Schrepfer had treated City Manager Greg Garrett to a ride the day before. Garrett told the group that he liked the pedicab project. Schrepfer hopes he can have them available in Tehachapi this year. Pictured with Schrepfer is Tourism Commissioner Zanya Biviano and Tehachapi News reporter Cara Jackson....
I'm very proud of the way Tehachapi continues to shine among our peers in Kern County. Recently, Tehachapi was showcased as part of the Kern Economic Summit in Bakersfield, as both our healthy real estate market and business climate were topics of discussion. Our own Roger Hayes, owner of Sierra Technical Services, one of the largest employers in the City and developer of several crucial pieces of combat training drones for the military, was on a panel discussing the aerospace industry in Kern...
It was standing room only at the Police Department Community Room the evening of March 19 when TVRPD Board Chairman Laura Lynne Wyatt and General Manager Michelle Vance presented their concept for the development of a new multi-use community center and for upgrading Recreation and Parks District's existing facilities. They asked the City to support them in their efforts to research and place a bond measure on the November ballot to finance the project. Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park...
Superintendent Susan Andreas-Berval reported that on March 12 TUSD, along with Cerro Coso Community College, unveiled the long-awaited Welding Program at Tehachapi High School. City Manager Greg Garrett and EDC President Lydia Chaney were in attendance. A storage room at the high school was outfitted with a ventilation system and 10 welding machines purchased for the program. For now, the welding classes are part of the Adult Education Program with Cerro Coso credits; however, it is hoped that...
I was leaving a meeting recently at the Community Room of the Tehachapi Police Department building on my way back to City Hall. When I leave that venue there are plenty of ways I can take to City Hall. I can continue on C Street until I reach Curry, from there I can turn on D, E, F, or Tehachapi Blvd., since they all connect to Robinson where City Hall is located. For some reason the words "there are many roads to City Hall" just sort of stuck in my mind. As I dwelled on that a little during...

The City of Tehachapi has released our "2017 Year in Review". This is an annual project we started several years ago to showcase the accomplishments of the City, our various departments and the citizens over the previous calendar year. This year we focused on the theme "We The People" with each section of our City operation being addressed under one of the core principles found in the Preamble of the United States Constitution. We firmly believe that "We The People" of Tehachapi, live up to the...
The city of Tehachapi is run as a business. "We are a non-profit business," City Manager Greg Garrett told members of the Kiwanis Club of Tehachapi on Jan. 31 at the Tehachapi Police Department Community Room. "The trick is keeping the lights on," he said. The city operates the water and service utilities and owns, among other properties, the train depot museum, the BeeKay Theatre, the police department building and the wastewater treatment plant. "We have highly trained professionals," he...
The city of Tehachapi has rejected a citizen's petition that would have required the City Council to rescind its Dec. 4 ordinance establishing district-based elections. According to the city, mistakes in content and wording invalidated the signed forms that resident Peter Graff delivered to City Hall on Jan. 2, 2018. The forms bore 565 signatures, which were more than the ten percent of the city's registered voters (436) needed to validate the petition and trigger a referendum on the November...
I've said it before many times, but it's worth repeating: The City is a collection of businesses whose services are designed to enhance the quality of life for Tehachapi residents. Some of our businesses like the water and wastewater departments, directly affect every City resident. Others, like Development Services, often have less of a direct-effect, but still impact the quality of life for all. One of our most-unique businesses, one that has the potential to affect nearly everyone but often g...
The Coffee with the Mayor and City Manager will meet at The Coffee Mill on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 a.m. Mayor Ed Grimes said, "this has been a great way to talk to members of our great town and listen to their thoughts." Both Mayor Ed Grimes and Tehachapi City Manager Greg Garrett attend the monthly community gathering held on the third Thursday of the month to listen to the public and answer questions they may have. The Coffee Mill located at 120 S. Mill St. in downtown provides a...
It ain't over yet! City Council could face tough decision Signed petition forms filed Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018 at Tehachapi City Hall may trigger suspension of the City Council's ordinance that jettisoned the at-large election system in favor of five single-member council districts. Former Tehachapi police officer Pete Graff filed the petitions on behalf of residents who oppose the City Council's 5-0 vote Dec. 4, 2017 to approve the election district ordinance. The opponents assert that voters shou...
Welcome to 2018, a year of remarkable potential and, dare I say, a historic year for our community on the business and commerce front. 2018 will include a major shift in our local retail with the addition of Walmart. As construction crews break ground and go to work on this long-awaited project, the opportunities for jobs, local tax revenues, improved infrastructure and accompanying new businesses will be unprecedented. It is another step in the responsible growth that our City has been...
If you haven't had the chance to experience the Tehachapi Community Theatre at the historic BeeKay Theatre Downtown, I would encourage you to make it a priority in the coming year. I took the opportunity to accompany family to 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever' during its final weekend and needless to say, I was impressed. The production was cast almost entirely with our local children, telling the story about troubled kids initially using the concept of a Christmas pageant as a chance to hang ou...
The City of Tehachapi for the first time recorded an injury free year for its workforce. "We have special people who are committed to working for the city and making it a great place to live and work. Tyler Napier has worked very hard in coordinating our safety training programs," said City Manager Greg Garrett. The City of Tehachapi employs a total of 76 people including 69 full time, seven part-time, and six who are elected. The city is made up of several departments including Police, Public...
As we enjoy the holiday shopping season, I hope you're taking notice of our local 'Buy 1' initiative. It's a challenge of sorts from the City to our citizens to make the effort to purchase at least one gift this year from a local small business. We understand that buying every gift here locally might not be possible, but our economic development team feels like one gift is reasonable. Honestly, after discovering everything our local shops have to offer, you'll most-likely be able to find...
When the TVRPD Board met on Nov. 28, they welcomed their new member Wes Backes who had been appointed by the city on Nov. 18. Backes and his family have been in Tehachapi for many years. He graduated from Tehachapi High School where he played football for Coach Denman. He is now a member of the Tehachapi Fire Department and stationed at the Valley and Curry station. The Board voted unanimously to take over the Tehachapi Gran Fondo from the City. The matter was due to come before the City...
Mayor Ed Grimes handed me a treasure one day, it was a small textbook printed in 1928 from the High School Home Studies Bureau entitled "The Blue Book of Civics". It sits as a display piece in my office, an antiquity, but a useful one at that. Much of what was written and taught in 1928 still surprisingly applies today, nothing more so than the first chapter on the first page that answers the basic question, "What is a Community?" The answer from the book: "A community is a group of people who...
Thank you volunteers!...
On Tuesday, Oct. 24 the City of Tehachapi recognized employees for reaching milestone markers for their years of service to the city. "We are so lucky to have dedicated people in our organization. The city would not function at the high level it does without staff who care about our community as much as they do," said City Manager Greg Garrett. Leading the way with 33 years of service is Perrin Cowan who works in our Public Works Department. Dale Hamon and Christie Copus were each recognized...
It was a full house at the Wells Education Center board room Nov. 6 as the Tehachapi City Council honored the sponsors and 263 volunteers who have made the Tehachapi GranFondo cycling event No. 13 in the nation. Local non-profit organizations received checks for a total of $22,000 for their work supporting the popular event and providing volunteers. Below left, attorneys Maricela Marroquin (left) and Youstina Aziz, both of the Los Angeles firm Richards Watson Gershon, are of counsel to the city...
