Have a Heart Humane Society is proud to announce that two of our dogs have graduated from training classes at Thunder Paws Dog Training. Rudy is one of the “Magnificent 7” dogs, they were dumped in an equipment yard on South St. early in the spring 2014. Rudy, his mom, brother and four sisters, were rescued by Have a Heart volunteers and several local pet lovers who responded to a Facebook post about the dogs. Rudy’s foster mom, Chelley Kitzmiller, enrolled Rudy in Thunder Paws agility classes along with his brother Zeke. Both dogs showe...
helley Kitzmiller, a 30 year resident of Tehachapi, has two loves: writing and rescuing pets. She began writing romance novels in the late 1970's, when there were no writing classes or conferences to help aspiring romance writers. Eager to learn, Kitzmiller used a highlighter pen to deconstruct her favorite books-a tool she still recommends to new writers. After a few years of studying and practicing, she sold her first book and made it her goal to give readers a painless history lesson within...
Have a Heart Humane Society has been approached by a Tehachapi Eagle Scout to work with him and his troop on a community service construction project. We have given the idea a lot of consideration. Have a Heart proposes to work with the scouts to help some of the feral cat colonies in Tehachapi. Why does Tehachapi have feral cats? Feral cats are the offspring of stray or abandoned pets that were not spayed or neutered. Have a Heart will ask business owners, residents and our own volunteers to...

Kern County has much to be proud of - especially the people that live here. Chelley Kitzmiller of Tehachapi is one of those people we can all be proud of. Chelley is the founder of Have a Heart Humane Society based in Tehachapi. Chelley and Have a Heart have been providing low-cost spay and...

Thinking about adopting a dog or a cat? Have a Heart Humane Society would like to pass on some information that we hope will be helpful. Should you buy from a breeder or a pet store, adopt from a shelter or from a pet rescue? If you buy a pet from a dog breeder, make sure you have thoroughly checked out the breeder first, not just online but by visiting their facility, and make sure you see all of the facility. Many breeders are not breeding to improve the breed, but are, in fact, backyard breed...

Unlike previous clinics, this one (our 8th!) will be open to all greater Tehachapi residents with no income requirements. As the latter prefers to remain anonymous, we won't say which Turners. Our vet,...

And please don’t forget this shelter when you’re thinking about adding a new pet to your family. Weeks ago we reported rescuing seven small dogs from an equipment yard on South Street. We dubbed them the...
