This year, with the Sierra snowpack at 180 percent of normal, the Kern River is a raging monster. While the water flow has peaked on both the upper Kern (above Lake Isabella) and the lower Kern (below the lake), the river still is dangerous. The increased flow is awesome for rafters who thrill to the whitewater challenges in safe, professionally managed operations, but it can be lethal for visitors who do not understand the danger they are facing, and who underestimate the sheer power of the...

While the City of Tehachapi was watching the country attempting to pull itself from the Great Depression, which had begun with the 1930s, there was a new look appearing in the downtown section. Green Street was paved for the first time in 1936 and two former Tehachapi mayors, Louis Kanstein and Frank Baumgart, built a movie theater which they named after themselves! Bee for Baumgart and Kay for Kanstein. Local contractor Vince Ninteman, was the construction superintendent. The theater closed in...

A few weeks ago I wrote of the Mojave Gold Rush and the discovery of the Golden Queen Mine that caused people from far an near to come to Mojave and hope to find such a bonanza as George Holmes. The following story gives one a glimpse of the same area during The Roaring Twenties. The busy little desert community of Mojave, in the late 1920s, had a population of maybe 500 friendly souls and was known for gale-force wind storms, extreme summer heat, gold mining and was also the terminus for...
The 2019 Main Street Tehachapi Farmers Market in Downtown Tehachapi will run from May 9 to Aug. 15 this year, with the exception of the 4th of July, when there will be no market. Market hours will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m., with many of the past year's vendors returning. Again this year, Adventist Health will be the major sponsor and will have a booth to do health screenings and provide health professionals to offer counseling and other services. Additional sponsors include The Loop Newspaper,...
My favorite Tehachapi area back roads for you to explore I often get asked to recommend pleasant drives for people who are newer to the area and I'm happy to do so, since the Tehachapi Mountains have an assortment of picturesque country roads that wind their way through the foothills, valleys, canyons and mountains of this California range. These two-lane back roads are relics from an earlier time – some were even dirt roads for horses and wagons before the arrival of autos and asphalt. S...

Sometimes when writing about people I find myself including little vignettes from their past; interesting little pieces that give a glimpse into a person's life as they lived it. Beth and Tony Anthony were childhood acquaintances. They dated all through high school and also after graduation. He graduated in 1946 and she, in 1947. Both were honor students. They were to marry in 1952 and Tony, a member of the U.S. Army at that time, would be shipped to Germany just one week after their wedding....

Recently MST has provided $20,000 in grants to Downtown businesses for façade improvements and repainting. Last year $5,000 was donated to assist the City with...

In 1950, when I began living in the Southland, it was, and still is, 200-miles from Oceanside, Calif. to Tehachapi and if I had a dollar for every time I have made the trip I would have a comfortable amount. At first, our trips consisted of getting into my husband's 1947 Buick Roadmaster and taking off. It was a lovely car; one that he acquired during his bachelor days while still an Enlisted man in the Corps. Highway 101, between the two points, at that time, was a three lane affair. The...

Libraries! Don’t you just love books? I do! I love reading and being around books and there is no better place to spend one’s time than in a library. As a former librarian, I might be a bit prejudiced, but I really don’t think so. Many writers entice their readers by weaving their stories between aisles of tomes. I’d like to share a few of those authors and their books with you. For our youngest readers, in “Biscuit Loves the Library” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli, a frisky golden retriever p...
Taking another look at the BeeKay Mural one may see Margie and Kelcy Owens, two citizens who managed to carve out a legend for themselves and for local citizens by simply opening a café on Main Street, Tehachapi. I say Main Street for that is what we "locals" always called it. Sometimes we could remember it was G Street, but mostly just Main. Whatever the name of the street, the name Kelcy's Café made its own reputation as a family restaurant. The minute one walked in you knew you were home a...
Two Saturday’s ago, the streets of Downtown Tehachapi were filled with patrons at Main Street Tehachapi’s Annual Ugly Sweater Wine Walk. The fundraiser, which invites attendees to walk through our thriving downtown area and sample wine and food from local businesses, sold nearly 500 tickets and was a huge success. Reports from local businesses also drew praise for the number of visitors and new residents that were enjoying the festivities. They found this out because in typical Teh...
Hundreds of revelers walked the streets of Tehachapi on Nov. 24 at Main Street Tehachapi's 5th annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Wine Walk, sampling wines at various businesses and showing off their ugly and not-so-ugly Christmas attire. Lots of fun was had by all....
