Back at the end of January, and before the social lockdown, Bill and Anya Norton, now recently retired, moved from Lancaster into their new home in Bear Valley accompanied by their four cats. Although both of them are aviation enthusiasts, for Anya it was the 4th of July hot air balloons that sold her on Tehachapi. She has worked on a balloon crew for 13 years. Bill retired from Edwards Air Force Base where he was flight test engineer and worked on both the F35 and the F22. Born in Northern...
The situation in Tehachapi regarding the COVID-19 emergency can be summed up in this exchange March 21 at the Dollar Tree: Customer to the clerk at checkout: "When do you expect...?" Clerk (before the question is completed): "Tuesday." Interpretation: The supplies are coming, and they are arriving every day. Don't panic. While grocery shoppers are alarmed at the strange sight of empty shelves in America, the supply lines are open while truckers, stockers and clerks are working hard, and there...
As of March 13, all amenities closed due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus. They will be closed at least until April 1, and will reassess the situation at that time. Based on that shutdown, the art show has also been delayed. Stay tuned for a new date. The CAA wants to assure you that they don’t plan to cancel the show altogether. Good news, neighbors! Our Community Services District along with the others in the Tehachapi area has been approved for a grant from the state to purchase a generator for use during the PSPS shutdowns. And we k...
After living in Oroville, Calif. for 28 years and following the devastating Camp Fire that destroyed nearby Paradise in 2018, John and Sherry Priest decided to move farther south to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Now that they have settled in Tehachapi, Sherry's sister and nephew from Texas have decided to move here as well. Both John and Sherry are retired. John drove the big semi-trucks hauling oil and gas for 30 years and Sherry at one time managed two ARCO stations and...
Matthew and Jacqueline Dolan moved into their new home in Bear Valley on Jan. 1. They purchased the house completely furnished. However, it was more than furnished; it included everything the prior owner possessed including books, family photos, mementos, linens and a kitchen complete with all utensils. In a bookcase, Jackie found a complete set of plans for the house. There were two large telescopes in the house – one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The owner of the house had passed...
At the beginning of January, both Deanna and Rick Phelan retired from Northrup Grumman in Palmdale where they had both worked for 30 years. When looking for a retirement location, Tehachapi seemed like the perfect spot for the two of them and Deanna's mother, Carol Wilson, who is living with them. Tehachapi is close to the desert but not in the desert and the desert is their playground. Deanna and Rick spend most of their free time RZR riding and camping in the desert. Carol sometimes joins...
I received a call from my good friend, Del Troy, who was looking for some specific information about a former San Canyon/ Tehachapi resident: Edward H. McDaniel. I had lots of information but did not have the specific facts for which she searched. We had a nice telephone conversation and since it was five years ago that I wrote about Ed, I'd like for you to meet a fine person who passed away some forty one years ago. He was a good man who was instrumental in helping Professor Orris Imhof institu...
Julia Bosma and her son Peter Douglas moved to Tehachapi in November from Bakersfield when Julia began her new position at Rio Tinto US Borax in Boron. The geologist was hired as an "environmental adviser" for Environmental Compliance and Permitting. For her, Tehachapi was the most obvious choice of a place to live and she has become well acquainted with other Rio Tinto employees who live in the area. Prior to Rio Tinto, Julia had been working for the California High Speed Rail, first in...
It was late last year that Jesus (Jess) Lopez, his wife Julia Ramirez Lopez and their three young daughters moved to Tehachapi from Norwalk, Calif. They wanted their little girls to be brought up in the safer and more secure surroundings offered by our mountain community. Over the last ten years, they had been visiting Jess' sister here and thought it was a great place for the kids. They always loved coming here. Jess was born and raised in Long Beach, Calif., with his two sisters. His parents...

A Neighborhood Watch (NHW) is neighbors helping neighbors. In my Dec. 7 article, I mistakenly referred to Jennine Gillispie’s mother as Wendy. Jennine’s mother was Carol Swingley and Wendy managed the store for her. Also, while her store is normally open Thursday through Sunday, she will be open daily until Dec. 31. My sincere apologies to Jennine for these errors. If you have moved to Tehachapi within the last six months, Hilltop Welcoming Service has a bag of information about the Greater Tehachapi area, its activities, events, government and fac...
Although Jennine Gillespie knew about Tehachapi for most of her adult life, it wasn't until she moved here about a year ago that she got to know Tehachapi. Her father was real estate developer, Asa Swingley, who along with Los Angeles developer Don Adams owned The Land Co. on Woodford Tehachapi Rd. They were the pair who subdivided and sold the lots that would become Alpine Forest. Jennine was born in North Hollywood, Calif. and raised in the San Fernando Valley. She has a sister currently...
Palmdale residents Darek and Dena Galloway have had a dream to move to Tehachapi since 2007. They loved the natural setting of the mountains and the easy-living lifestyle. It took until 2019 to make that dream come true; they had lived in Palmdale for 17 years by the time they finally made the move. Dena still works as a social worker in Palmdale for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, where she works with the homeless. Derek was born in Los Angeles as was his father. He is an...
In the hills at the west end of Cummings Valley, hidden between Stallion Springs and Bear Valley Springs, is the rather isolated gated community of Hidden Oaks. About 10 years ago, Los Angeles architect Shanon Drayton and her husband, contractor Rick Arreola, found a gorgeous lot at the top of the mountain in Hidden Oaks quite by accident. A dirt bike accident near Tehachapi sent Rick to the local hospital. They met a realtor who wanted show them a piece of property. Of course, they bought it....
Bill and Beth Chaney arrived in Tehachapi in September from Clovis, Calif. where they had lived for ten years. Bill supervises 160 pastors located from Frazier Park to the Oregon border, as...
When it came time to think about retirement, Nan and Raul Alvarez thought about Tehachapi, a place they had visited many times on family vacations for a period of about 35 years. Gary and Wendy Perlin both lived in Tehachapi when they were young but never knew each other here. They were living in San Diego and had really had more than their fill of the big city and the expense of living there. They both had fond memories of Tehachapi, the four seasons and the natural surroundings, and both had vocations that would allow a move, so they began to look. With the help of a local realtor, they finally found the perfect rental in April. The first time Gary saw it he realized...
Carl and Carolyn Orr had lived in Apple Valley for 18 years; however for the last four Carl had been commuting daily from Apple Valley to his job in the Bakersfield area. As much as they liked living in Apple Valley, the commute was just too much of a trek. They really liked Tehachapi; it was closer to work for Carl and still not too far from the rest of their family that is now spread from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. They had been looking for quite a while before they finally found just the...
Lori Harvey had been in Tehachapi less than a week when we met in Central Park on the 4th of July. When we finally got together and had a chance to visit, I learned that she was newly divorced and had moved to Tehachapi from Gillette, Wyoming to join her daughter and family here. Lori said that Gillette is probably best known for its proximity to Devil's Tower National Monument of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" fame. Born in South Dakota, Lori has three brothers. Two of them live in...

When she found the opportunity to join the hospital staff in Tehachapi, she applied and fortunately had already made the move by the time the two...

It was in Fallbrook that they went through 4H with their four kids, cared for their six horses and...
Daryl and Melissa Pereira were looking for a slower paced environment in which to raise their three children. Both of them had been raised in Ventura County and for many years had loved to visit their friends in Bakersfield. During those visits they would often take trips up to Tehachapi, especially after a snow. Early this year, when they learned a house on 2-and-a-half acres in Sand Canyon became available, they jumped at it even though their 12-year-old son might have to miss the last two mon...
