First Friday, April 3, will be a special celebration at Fiddlers Crossing, starting at 7 p.m. A host of local musicians will be on hand to help mark the fifth anniversary for the popular venue. Fiddlers Crossing first opened on Saturday, April 17, 2010, with a performance by local band Geezers on the Loose. The establishment opened as “a work in progress” in what had been the Art Center. According to co-founder Peter Cutler, “We threw a venue together with whatever we had lying around, slapped some ugly paint on the walls and some even uglie...
Camp Kiya, Tehachapi’s traditional family music camp, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Arts Council of Kern. The “Arts in the Community” grant was given for the scholarship program, which helps make the camp affordable to students and adults who would not be able to attend without some financial aid. Camp Kiya will take place July 26-30 this summer. The Arts Council of Kern – in partnership with the California Arts Council, the County of Kern and local agencies – provides, supports and promotes arts access, advocacy and education...
Carol Figueria and Jack Tate wanted a vacation home in the mountains and last summer they found their Tehachapi getaway. Since they are only here about two weekends a month and were traveling in Italy in the fall, it took a while for me to give them an “official” welcome. It was almost December before we connected. When they are not in Tehachapi, they live and work in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angelescounty. Jack owns Tate Heating and Air Conditioning, “The Weather Changers”, located in Mis...
Debbie Hand-Cutler and Peter Cutler presented an interesting program about women singers and songwriters of folk music to American Association of University Women (AAUW). They talked about the evolution of folk music which began as dance music or "just sitting on the front porch music." When the phonograph and radio came into common use things changed. The Carter Family, led by Maybelle Carter, began performing and making records in the 1920s. Cutler played an original recording of Maybelle...
I first met Lauren Thompson at the Fall Business Showcase where she was representing Creative Connections, a non-profit that helps to find homes for developmentally disabled adults. She told me that she and her husband, Nathan, had just moved their family from Bakersfield to Tehachapi. On my subsequent visit with Lauren, I learned that they had been looking for a chance to raise their family in the clean mountain air so, when Lauren’s company decided to open an office in Tehachapi, they j...
One critic said of Americana singer-songwriter Dulcie Taylor that she is "a major talent who's been hiding from the rest of us for too long." Bringing "hidden talents" to Tehachapi is one of the goals of Fiddlers Crossing. Taylor will be performing at the downtown Tehachapi music venue on October 10, at 7 p.m. She will be joined by guitarist George Nauful and percussionist Tracy A. Morgan. Dulcie Taylor learned a hard music lesson at an early age – don't leave your ukulele unattended in a p...
The logo for the duo, JC & Laney reads, "Heart 'n' Soul & Rock 'n' Roll." That's the perfect summary for this dynamic musical duo who will take the stage at Fiddlers Crossing on Friday, September 26. Although they have been together for just five years, they have already released five CDs of original compositions, are regularly played on Pandora, Spotify, and dozens of other internet radio stations, and have had many of their songs picked up by touring artists throughout Europe and the US. JC...
David and Penny Rivas had been living in an old farmhouse in Ventura, California, but when Penny retired after eight years in litigation support for Amgen in Thousand Oaks, they decided it was time for a move. They were attracted to the livability and cool nights of the mountains of Tehachapi and finally made the move to Bear Valley in June. David retired two years ago from “boiling water” at a forging plant in nearby Oxnard. He monitored the boilers that operated a 50,000 pound hammer that was...
Mountain Bible Church began in 1971 as a Bible study on Mulberry Street with only five families. Soon their growth required that they move out of the home and they began renting the Masonic Temple, which provided a meeting place for the next nine years. In September, 1971, the study/fellowship was officially incorporated as a church, adopting the name of Mountain Bible Church of Tehachapi. Fruitvale Community Church of Bakersfield (now known as Riverlakes) was very instrumental in lending...
Remember the fear you experienced watching Star Wars, when you first met Darth Vader – the heartless killing machine? Luke Skywalker was young and untrained, just naïve enough to not be daunted by the improbability of his success going up against vast imperial power. What a fool. Vader’s boss, the evil emperor, didn’t value human life only his ultimate power. Resistors and innocents were brutally killed. Fear and control was the religion of the empire. Into this violent world, a rag-tag bunch...
On Friday, September 5, Fiddlers Crossing is bringing back one of the favorite performers from last year. Angelo M is an authentic voice of experience from the American Heartland, whether singing the blues or other styles of American "roots" music. Angelo M (short for Melasecca) was a hit with Tehachapi's audience because he is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years...

A GranFondo is likened to one of those giant (serves 4-6) sundaes, offered in ice cream shoppes. To begin, the sundae glass is the incredible mountain scenery. To this, one would add several large scoops of ice cream or participants ranging from professionals to 80 year-old tourists. In lieu of hot fudge, pineapple and caramel toppings, you add mechanical and medical support, feeding and hydration stations and bring traffic to a screeching halt. Sprinkle with lots of enthusiasm and supportive...

Over the last couple of years, several people have asked us, "Do you think you could ever get Katy Moffatt to play here?" We can now give them an answer: "Yes! In Central Park The Honky Tonk Truckers have been playing their rocking country music in Tehachapi and the surrounding areas for the last eight years. The current lineup includes Monroe Conner (bass and vocals), Rich Valpey (guitar and...

Claudia White, Loop Publisher, asked me to update my column from last year about the Mountain Festival. I wrote a column taken from the 1968 Lilac Festival brochure that I had found in my mother Marion Deaver’s files last year – it was the only one she had saved. So, having discovered the library at Tehachapi Museum, thanks to Del Troy, I once again imposed upon her to let me see some of the other old brochures. I chose several, including the 1958 brochure proclaiming that year as the first ann...

Central Coast-based band, Cafe Musique will perform at Fiddlers Crossing on Friday, July 18 at 7 p.m. They may hail from the central coast of California, but the members of Café Musique have at least one foot each planted deep in foreign musical soil. By merging four very different backgrounds, the quintet presents a rich mixture of styles including gypsy, tango, classical and folk. Combining powerful vocals with soaring violin and driving accordion, the listener will be treated to an exotic...
