  • Does God love everyone?

    Chris Frost, contributing writer|Mar 4, 2023

John Calvin commented on John 3:16 that, "People are not easily convinced that God loves them." The New Testament authors spend a great deal of time explaining, persuading, reasoning and giving evidence to the fact that God loves everyone. Then and now, there is so much rubbish of conventional religious notions that has to be hauled away before one comes to an in-depth experience and understanding of God's love. Overtime, many Christians have been exposed to false teaching, usually by all too...

  • Remembering Harold Williams: a Nuwä leader and remarkable man

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Dec 31, 2022

If you want to learn more about the Native Americans of the Tehachapi Mountains, the first two things to do are this: visit the Tehachapi Museum, and also pick up a book called Handbook of the Kawaiisu. This unique book was a life accomplishment of a remarkable Nuwä elder named Harold Williams. Harold was a leading tribal member of the Nuwä, the Tehachapi Indian people, and he realized a longtime dream with the 2009 publication of Handbook of the Kawaiisu, a book he co-authored with a...

  • Mushy holiday indulgences

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Dec 17, 2022

You are probably too busy to sit down and read at the moment, but I like to call the days between Christmas and New Years "the lull," where one can take a breath, slow down and enjoy some goodies with a good book or two. Maybe not too serious a book, full of dark motives and deep contemplation. But rather books with a lighter mood and happy endings. I found a few mushy romances and mysteries for your reading pleasure. To qualify, the cover needs to have snow, perhaps with a sprig of holly or...

  • Welcome back, Mountain Music!

    Peter Cutler, contributing writer|Dec 3, 2022

For nearly 25 years, Mountain Music served the community as Tehachapi’s downtown music store. Even with the pandemic, it kept a presence downtown with a booth in the Treasure Trove, which is now the Arts Center. “I couldn’t leave the community without a place to buy reeds, strings, capos and other musical necessities,” said owner and founder Deborah Hand, who sat out the lockdown by writing books (available at the Arts Center) and plays. Now the store at 206 E. F St., Tehachapi, will be back in time for Christmas. The “elves” have been workin...

  • Laying our rocks down

    Chris Frost, contributing writer|Sep 3, 2022

Empathy is an important skill for us to develop in all of our relationships. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In the scriptures there is a story of how Jesus showed empathy with his presence and posture, and with his keen ability to listen to a situation and discern it as it unfolded before him. Religious leaders brought a woman who had been caught in an immoral act, which they believed deserved capital punishment. They had a Bible verse to prove it! The...

  • Thunder on the Mountain Car Show and music in Central Park

    Mark La Ciura, contributing writer|Sep 3, 2022

Race Communication's Thunder on the Mountain Car show was a big hit with over 200 cars and trucks showing up on Aug. 21. I saw many custom hot rods, trucks and muscle cars. The show was a big fundraiser for the greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce. The proceeds from the event will go to benefit the organization and local businesses in the region and admission was free. I would like to center on two of the fantastic cars that were on display. First is Rod Hamilton's 1964 Jaguar E-Type. This car...

  • Walt Disney Concert Hall

    Mel White-Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jun 25, 2022

Every now and then an opportunity arises for me to get out of the comfort zone of our little mountain town and its slower pace and get into the faster pace and sometimes chaotic scene that is Los Angeles. Such was the case a couple of Sundays ago when friend Suzanne Bennet and I headed south. Our destination was the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown L.A. for an evening lecture by Angela Davis. We left mid-afternoon to allow plenty of time for travel and dinner before the main event;...

  • You missed a good one!

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Jun 11, 2022

"I saw you toss the kites on high and blow the birds about the sky..." That quote from Robert Louis Stevenson's book, "A Child's Garden of Verses," kept me thinking of the aforementioned "wind." Good old Tehachapi wind was present for the Heritage League Errea Garden Dedication held on Saturday, May 28. Like a naughty child who sometimes shows off for guests when they visit, the wind was only able to blow the tops of the trees. The garden, itself, was sheltered on all sides. "Foiled again!" Old...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|May 14, 2022

Debra Sanderson had lived in Pine Mountain Club for 20 years when she made the decision to move to Tehachapi, joining a friend who had encouraged her to come here. Her landlord in Pine Mountain Club had sold the house she was renting there in March so she didn’t have the time she would have liked to find a place in Tehachapi. Fortunately, she was able to find a place that will do for a while. Plus, she’s closer to the services she would continue to need following an automobile accident she had...
