On June 13, of this year, 2017, St. Malachy Church will be celebrating one hundred thirty years as a parish. Long years ago on that date in 1887, a Bishop from the Monterey-Los Angeles Diocese trekked to the small mountain community to designate the small church as a parish. The little white frame building had been constructed by members of the community, of all denominations, who were anxious to help by "pounding a few nails" with the Catholics; their neighbors and friends. St. Malachy Parish...

On April 22, Earth Day, there are going to be people marching for science around the country and beyond. People are going to be coming together to show their support for science, and believe it or not science does need our support. Back in the 1920s, Lysenko, an agricultural scientist in the fairly new Soviet Union, developed a theory of “evolution” that conformed to the political ideology then in power. It involved the idea that you could change the descendants of a plant or animal by doi...
Some of my earlier memories from the 1930s was Tehachapi's 4th of July FREE Barbecue! It was taken for granted that everyone would be in the City Park and have a wonderful meal that included beef prepared in deep pit style cooking where the meat is slow cooked for 24 hours in an underground pit. Word spreads fast when the term "free" is included and people from near and far came; some as far as Los Angeles. Our small community, in the 1930s, had a population of a scant one thousand souls...

Fourth of July is not just hotdogs and fireworks, but Sousa marches, patriotic songs and the 1812 Overture. On Earth Day, April 22, Girl Scout Troop 3383 along with their leader Kendra Mauldin and Lehigh Cement CEO Craig Miflin planted a young Raywood Ash tree in Philip Marx Central Park. The tree is the first of at least seven trees that will be replacing dead and dying trees that are scheduled to be removed from the park. According to TVRPD Maintenance Supervisor Nolan Ferdinand, the Raywood was chosen because it is a fast growing tree. Lehigh donated the tree to the scout troop and all turned out...

Neighbors of Philip Marx Central Park have adopted four carved stump sculptures that the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District ordered removed Aug. 17 for safety reasons. Charles Jones, 30, said he was "devastated" when he saw the tree trimmers cutting the stump carvings, which had become iconic attractions since then-Rec & Park district Manager Gary Opferman commissioned artist Kent Holmgren to create them in 2008. The playful, funny faces emerging from dead and dying trees has...
I have been an Old Timer for a good many years having passed the forty year requirement figure while I was still in my forties. It seems that the newly qualified folk sort of shy away from the Senior affair and they shouldn't. It's really a fun gathering and laughter abounds. It gives one a chance to see people who once lived here and were a part of our lives. I don't know how many towns or cities sponsor such an event but it certainly goes over big in Tehachapi. Recreation and Parks and the...

Most of us remember the 100th birthday of the city of Tehachapi held in 2009 in front of the steps of the present city hall complete with a jumbo-tron. But some of you have been here long enough to remember Tehachapi’s 50th anniversary, which my mother Marion Deaver wrote about in 1959. In 1909 the downtown was lit by a dozen gasoline street lights which shone down dimly each night on the dirt streets of the city. If a fire broke out, volunteer firemen rushed to the scene with a hand-drawn t...
