The first gathering of the Tehachapi Mountain Healing Drum Circle was held at the Tehachapi Natural Market on June 18 to celebrate bringing in the summer solstice. It was created by and facilitated by Dr. Jim Pickerell, a traditional naturopath and percussionist. There were approximately 20 participants on one of the hottest days of the year. Everyone had a good time under the shade canopies and fans, in spite of the heat. The community drum circle is an informal gathering of people who meet...
We are here on the verge of our Independence Day, grateful for the opportunity to celebrate once again with our community. While COVID-19 forced the cancellation of last year's All-American 4th of July Festival, I am pleased to be preparing for this event once again. There have been a few changes. We have made the festival a little smaller, focusing our efforts on only one location, Philip Marx Central Park, but we have managed to cram an entire day's worth of activities into that park for all t...
One of my earlier memories from the 1930s was Tehachapi's 4th of July free barbecue! It was taken for granted that everyone would be in the City Park and have a wonderful meal that included beef prepared in deep-pit style cooking where the meat is slow cooked for 24 hours in an underground pit. Word spreads fast when the term "free" is included and people from near and far came; some as far as Los Angeles. Our small community, in the 1930s, had a population of a scant 1,000 souls, including the...

The festival will see some changes in 2021 including limitation to just one venue at Philip Marx Central Park, and an entertainment lineup that shifts focus to local independent music artists playing on the...

As we pursue a sense of normalcy, our business at City Hall continues down that road with all the expected highs and lows. Whether that work involves taking a state agency to task over unfulfilled promises, or finding ways to invest in our quality of life, we remain steadfast in our commitment. Many of you caught our response to the latest environmental documents for the California High Speed Rail project and the section of track scheduled to come through Tehachapi. This has been a reality for...
Tehachapi Mountain Quilters is looking for new members. During this year of various stages of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many have been looking for a new creative way to use their time at home and the art of quilting is a perfect outlet for young adults, retirees and parents who are homeschooling their children. Tehachapi Mountain Quilters is a teaching guild founded in 1997 under state guidelines and they always begin their meetings with that motto. Their members are always willing...
I read an article a while back that described a study (a study?) about why children didn't care for the school lunches. We're talking about a carefully planned, nutritionally balanced lunch. That last sentence says it all. What kid likes a carefully planned, nutritious lunch? I remember my youngest child (now past 50) used to tell me that he always put his peas in the empty milk carton. Good place to hide peas! Of course, some kids eat the lunches and think nothing much about it. The general pop...
How has your life changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began? What have you had to give up? What have you gained? Sudden change thrust on us is tricky and seldom welcome. There is loss. For the past four months many have struggled with lost income; disrupted jobs and education; limited social visits and gatherings; and downscaled celebrations. Some people have suffered loneliness, illness and death. It can be hard to find the silver lining in such circumstances. Don't get me wrong, the pandemic...
Recently, I had the honor of leading a memorial service for a gentleman who was an inspiring hero. He had been a firefighter for 30 years and often walked into danger. There's a particular biblical quote that is usually read at the farewell service for firefighters: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." (John 15:13 NSRSV) This man had written a brief autobiography and it was precious to hold the pages of his handwritten words. He was one year older than...

The Fourth of July, the annual holiday celebrating independence from England and the creation of the United States of America, is a festive occasion in the Tehachapi Mountains. It has been since it was first observed here in 1856. We don't have many details about that first Fourth of July celebration, but it was mostly members of the John and Amanda Brite family and some of their friends. They were basically the only English-speaking residents of the Tehachapi Mountains in those days. The...
