Wind is a fact of life when you live in the Tehachapi Mountains – there's a good reason there are hundreds of millions of dollars worth of wind turbines on local hillsides. Mountain passes tend to channel winds, and three mountain passes – Altamont Pass, Tehachapi Pass and San Gorgonio Pass – were the areas where the wind energy industry was born in California in the 1980s. While our winds are variable, there are some basic patterns that tend to hold true. Our prevailing wind is from the west/...

Mullenax Ranch of Tehachapi is introducing their mobile goat yoga program with baby Nigerian Dwarf Goats, a miniature breed of dairy goat. With classes in Tehachapi and throughout the state, including such events as "Goat Yoga & Wine" and "Goats & Grilled Cheese" there's enough to "goat around." It was brought to my attention that the monument in Philip Marx Central Park has been, once again, defaced by unknown parties. Those attending the Memorial Day Service will be able to see the damage done. It's a shame that people cannot look at the names on the plaque and know the story behind them. These are the names of what we term Gold Star Veterans: people who were killed in action. If those doing the damage were to know, just a few of the facts, they would never dream of doing harm to the...

A new year is just another day on the calendar, but the symbolic switch holds so much hope and opportunity. Although Tehachapi is my hometown, I feel there are many experiences and examples of small town charm that I never take advantage of. This year, I want to participate in more of them. Keeping with the theme of this column, here's a list of 18 activities you can do in Tehachapi this year that promote and embrace the small town charm we know and love. 1. Adorable Alpacas: Who can resist...
Chuck and Candi Hallman were wandering through Philip Marx Central Park on the 4th of July when they stopped by our booth. We finally had a chance to visit almost two months later. They said that they had moved to Stallion Springs around the first of this year. They came from Lakeview Terrace in the San Fernando Valley where they had lived for 36 years. However, The Valley was getting crowded and the traffic was annoying. They loved the slower lifestyle and the natural surroundings of the...
I just ran onto a photo of our community water tank from years past; the caption at the bottom says, circa 1914. Circa is a way of saying "about" or "approximately" or "darned if I know!" Close enough. It's from the Ed Wiggins collection and were it not for Ed's saved photos Tehachapi's pictorial history would be sadly lacking. He was the ancestor of Tehachapi's pioneer Wiggins family. He took many, many pictures but did not take this picture of the water tower for Ed was born around 1918! The...
Tehachapi Recreation & Park District just hosted the 2017 Old Timers Reunion in Philip Marx Central Park on Aug. 6, and by all measures, it was a success. The event was well attended, and a good time was had by all. Here are a few snapshots of some of the Old Timers in attendance. Larry Rolin was born in 1965 in Tehachapi hospital, and ever since then, even though he's moved away several times, he's always come back to live here. He spent 19 years working construction jobs that had him moving...
