    Cathy Hansen|Jan 4, 2020

I want to share a photo of Fitz Fulton and Bob Hoover that was taken by Mike Owen at the retirement party held for Dan Sabovich in 2002. These two men, Fitzhugh Fulton and Bob Hoover, are decorated veterans of World War II and Korea and were participants in legendary flight test work with the U.S. Air Force. I love the photos we have of the many illustrious test pilots that have flown in the skies over Edwards AFB, California City, Boron, North Edwards, Rosamond, Lancaster, Palmdale and Mojave....

    Nov 23, 2019

The Tehachapi Valley lost a kind, interesting and community-minded man with the passing of Harold Cox, 84, on Oct. 20. Harold had been battling cancer but was still able to get around, and only a few weeks ago celebrated his 84th birthday at Kelcy's Restaurant surrounded by a large group of friends. Harold had a special appreciation for antiques and collectibles, and he did his part to capture some of America's past, creating a small but thoroughly-stocked gasoline filling station from the...

  • Techachapi says a sad goodbye to pet groomer Dorrie Walsh

    Sep 28, 2019

We Tehachapians adore our animals, both large and small – our cats and dogs, hamsters and horses. And we deeply appreciate all those who help us care for our four-legged family members – our skilled veterinarians, pet sitters and groomers. Sadly, Ms. Dorrie Walsh, proprietor of "The Groomer," located on South Street, is closing her business after serving the Tehachapi community for the better part of four decades (since 1981). Throughout all those years she has clipped, brushed, washed and, wel...

A resistance movement delayed construction and spurred community engagement on an unprecedented scale. One hearing at the high school gymnasium drew more than 700 advocates for and against building the Walmart. The store opened on Aug. 7, 2019. • A man to remember

    Pat Gracey|Jul 20, 2019

When I occasionally travel Willow Springs Road toward Rosamond and Lancaster, I pass Truman Road and Hamilton Road. For years I have told anyone who would listen that the two roads do not stand for an early American statesman, Alexander Hamilton, or former President Harry Truman. The two roads are a reminder of Truman Hamilton former lawman and Constable of the 11th Judicial Township. Beginning his job in 1922, residents saw a man of substantial size, both in height and weight. His size alone...

  • Hi-speed rail work continues

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|May 11, 2019

The California High-Speed Rail project appeared to be careening toward oblivion when California Governor Gavin Newsom said in his Feb. 12 State of the State address that "Currently, there simply isn't a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to LA." Echoing opponents of the project, Newsom said there had been "too little oversight and not enough transparency." Rather than abandoning the High-Speed Rail plan, the new governor chose to reduce the monster to smaller...

  • Country back roads

    Jon Hammond|Apr 13, 2019

My favorite Tehachapi area back roads for you to explore I often get asked to recommend pleasant drives for people who are newer to the area and I'm happy to do so, since the Tehachapi Mountains have an assortment of picturesque country roads that wind their way through the foothills, valleys, canyons and mountains of this California range. These two-lane back roads are relics from an earlier time – some were even dirt roads for horses and wagons before the arrival of autos and asphalt. S...

  • Historical Society History

    Susan Wiggins, Tehachapi City Mayor|Mar 30, 2019

Settle was the current president of the historical society located in Southeastern Kern County. Settle was responding to a letter written to him to find out more about the newly created group. The group held its first meeting in May 1959 and was...
