  • Golden Queen Mine Shelter

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Apr 14, 2018

I was born in 1950. Now you can all figure out my age! I declare this to emphasize that I grew up during the Cold War after World War II. Because I lived in Mojave with a Marine Base next to me, until 1958, and our close proximity to Edwards Air Force Base (a major flight test facility), children my age in elementary school lived in constant fear that we would all be wiped out by an atomic bomb dropped near us. As children we had no real understanding of how real that threat could be. We had reg...

Keeping with the theme of this column, here's a list of 18 activities you can do in Tehachapi this year that promote and embrace the small town charm we know and love. 1. Adorable Alpacas: Who can resist...

  • A man to remember

    Pat Gracey|Nov 11, 2017

When I occasionally travel Willow Springs Road towards Rosamond and Lancaster, I pass Truman Road and Hamilton Road. For years I have told anyone who would listen that the two roads do not stand for an early American statesman, Alexander Hamilton, or former President Harry Truman. The two roads are a reminder of Truman Hamilton, former lawman and Constable of the 11th Judicial Township. Beginning his job in 1922, residents saw a man of substantial size; both in height and weight. His size alone...

  • Historical Society History

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Oct 28, 2017

I have written about the Kern-Antelope Historical Society meetings, field trips, and special events. While searching my mother Marion Deaver's files I found an October, 1961 quarterly bulletin which featured some of the history of the organization. My parents Paul and Marion, my brother Bill Deaver, and me were all charter members of the group which held its first meeting May 26, 1959 (I was nine). The group held its organizational meeting Dec. 15, 1959, and was incorporated in December, 1960. T...

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Sep 30, 2017

Over the centuries some areas of East Kern have served more than one purpose. This was found to be true in 1965, when members of the Kern-Antelope Historical Society visited a site near Rosamond that once had been a place where tufa was mined. The tufa was mined to be used in the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. All that was left in 1965 was the remains of one mill tower that processed the tufa. The tufa was then mixed with cement and used for construction. Upon closer inspection by...

  • Saturdays at the ranch

    Diana Frieling|Apr 15, 2017

Saturdays at the ranch begin with total chaos. In addition to our regular chores, we go to special lengths to make sure everything is super clean so our visitors have a great time. We begin at 7:30 a.m. by making sure all the animals have clean water and that hoses are rolled up and out of the way. While the beet pulp is soaking, we begin the task of cleaning pens and pathways. Depending on what the wind has done, this can be easy, or challenging. By 9 a.m., most of the pens are ready and it is time to cut carrots, hang signs and feed all of ou...

  • Birth of a dream

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Jan 7, 2017

You all know the drill –I scrounge through my mom Marion Deaver's stuff and I find something of hers to write about in this column. Sometimes it can be a little more complicated than that. I found an article from January 24, 1958. My mom wrote about the opening of Burton's Tropico Gold Mine & Mill Tours in Rosamond. I was eight that year. I found the article and remembered a photo Mom took one day that announced the beginning of the dream to open a mine camp at the base of Tropico Mine and c...
