There is no denying that the use of bicycles has increased tremendously in the last few years. Not only for the purpose of sport such as mountain biking and racing, but more and more people are riding their bikes to and from work. According to CNN Money the use of bikes to commute to work has increased 70% since 2000. Harli Smith spoke about her participation in Medical Brigades to Nicaragua at the weekly Rotary meeting. She was a Rotoract at Tehachapi High School and is now attendintg California State University, Bakersfield studying medicine. Tehachapi Rotary club presented her with a check for $500 to help offset expenses for her trip to Nicaragua, for seven days leaving June 13. Rotary Club of Tehachapi is sponsoring their annual Holiday Lunch for seniors on Thursday, Dec. 3, starting at noon. The event is held at St. Malachy Roman Catholic Church at 407 W. E St. in Tehachapi. This celebration features a full turkey lunch with all the fixings, which is offered free of charge to seniors over 60. The Rotary Club of Tehachapi has had a busy spring with several fundraising events, and we’ve also designated funds towards highly cherished projects. First there was an Afternoon Tea at Fiddler’s Crossing and the proceeds were donated to the local Salvation Army for their after school program, plus the Rotary Board designated an additional $500 to be contributed for this purpose. The Rotary Club of Tehachapi is thrilled to be able to send nine Tehachapi High School students to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) in Ojai, Calif, April 23-26. RYLA is a leadership camp designed especially for the future leaders of our community. At their meeting on April 16, the Rotary Club of Tehachapi presented a check for $1,000 to the Salvation Army’s after school program. The program has been an incredible success. The recent fundraiser tea party held by the Rotary Club of Tehachapi raised funds for the Salvation Army's after school program. Junior High and High School aged kids are welcome at this wonderful after school hangout. The Tehachapi Rotary Club held a lovely formal afternoon tea in support of the Salvation Army's after school program. Held in the beautifully decorated and intimate setting of Fiddlers Crossing, hot teas of many blends were brewed. A large variety of finger sandwiches and desserts highlighted the afternoon tea. On Saturday, Jan. 31 the Rotary Club of Tehachapi hosted its second annual Wine Pairing Dinner featuring the wines of Tobin James Cellars. On Thursday, Sept. 25 the Rotary Club of Tehachapi held its annual Fall Fashion Show. This year it took place at the new Wood's Pavilion on F Street. The Rotary Club of Tehachapi announces that its 11th annual Senior Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement Program which is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8th from 9 a.m. until noon. This Community Service Program continues to grow as more and more seniors sign up every year to have a team of Rotarians come to their home and put brand new batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at no cost to the recipient.
