Among the most charismatic – and largest – wildlife in the Tehachapi Mountains are the American Elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) that can be seen in outlying areas. These huge deer are impressive creatures, about the size of horses, and the bulls grow spreading antlers each year. You may wonder where these picturesque animals came from, and if they’ve always been here. They now wander the areas of Bear Valley Springs, Stallion Springs, Golden Hills, and the mountains south of Highline Road in a r...

He has just finished his second year at Cerro...

Currently there is a bit of a slowdown while awaiting the County to reissue a conditional use permit for the property. That could take as long as three months. Water and sewerage...

President returning, Debbie Rodriguez; Vice President, Noemi Tkacz; Secretary, Lori Rodgers; Treasurer, Donnie Williams; and Members at large Maralee Hill and Shirley Harbeson. Water California is in a major drought. We need to save water wherever we can. Shortening your shower by a minute or two could save up to 150 gallons per month. Put food coloring in the toilet tank, if it seeps into the bowl without flushing there's a leak. Fixing it could save several gallons. Water your lawn every three days at night or in the early morning hours when temperatures are cooler and winds lighter. Fix a dripping faucet, a drip a second uses five gallons per day. Do your part to co...

One of my earlier memories from the 1930s was Tehachapi's 4th of July free barbecue! It was taken for granted that everyone would be in the City Park and have a wonderful meal that included beef prepared in deep-pit style cooking where the meat is slow cooked for 24 hours in an underground pit. Word spreads fast when the term "free" is included and people from near and far came; some as far as Los Angeles. Our small community, in the 1930s, had a population of a scant 1,000 souls, including the...

Doug was an only child. While the family lived in Gary, Indiana until 1960, Doug's father worked in construction in Chicago, helping to build tall commercial buildings and churches. As Doug...
