Longtime Tehachapi resident Neal Losey died on April 29, at the age of 77, after a short but valiant battle with cancer. Neal had lived in Tehachapi for almost 50 years and spent most of that time as a cattle rancher. He was known as a hard worker, an honest person, a purveyor of "bad comedy" (as he called it) and as someone who never missed an opportunity to engage in a long conversation. He was also known for the VOICE, which was classically trained at the New York based American Academy of...

When Jack Sprague was 7 years old, he and his dog got caught in a downpour in a portion of Sand Canyon at the eastern end of the Tehachapi Valley, and together they sat out the rainstorm inside a rock shelter that bore numerous ancient Kawaiisu (Nuwä) Indian pictographs painted on the ceiling. The boy and his dog spent a couple of hours in the shallow cave. Jack never forgot the experience and the impression it made on him. That was in 1966, and Jack grew up to have an abiding fascination with...
On July 4, it seems there were more than fireworks lighting up the Tehachapi skies. People were asking each other if they had seen the very bright lights over Double Mountain, Tehachapi Mountain, Stallion Springs, Bear Valley Springs and town. It’s been many years since I watched lights pulse at the tops of mountains and come tumbling down the hillsides. Lights dazzling my eyes and imagination. I therefore dedicate this book review to unexplained phenomena. As a child, it was the story of ...

Now that we are having our lives change from total quarantine lockdown to little ventures out as some businesses open and some of us even go back to work, we at Have A Heart Humane Society have a few concerns. Our pets have been used to our being home and around for close to three-and-a-half months. Now while this may have irritated your cats (haha), your dogs have LOVED it! They may have a little trouble understanding or adjusting to your new hours away from home. Try to keep giving your pets that little bit of extra attention when you get...

In order to receive your tag, you must come to the...
Vanessa Stevens, the new general manager, is busy with all of the projects going on in the District. She moved to Stallion Springs 22 years ago and remembers the beautiful yards and happy, friendly atmosphere. She wonders what happened to that pride in the community. Today she looks around and sees everyone in a hurry and lots of yards overgrown and full of debris. What about you ... are you proud when you look around? Her goal for this community is to bring it back to what it used to be. Bring...
Work is continuing on the Transfer Station. The station was closed for three days to allow for trenching and cable runs for the new access system. The system will require an access sticker on your vehicle, and will only allow authorized vehicles to open the gate. This will help eliminate unauthorized dumping at the site. Green waste will be placed on the ground in the north east corner of the site, chipped by the CSD staff and loaded into a 50 yard bin. It appears the District will be able to...
The Board of Directors approved funds to expand the solid waste site and the project is underway. After investigating the possibility of moving the site, it was determined that because the existing site for solid waste transfer was already approved, it would be very cost effective to modify the existing site in order to meet the needs of the community, as well as the state and county. The site will have additional fencing and access control gates that will only allow authorized individuals...
The Library is headed to their new location. When the new administrative offices were built in 2009 the old CSD building was opened as a large library, a POA room and a place for small meetings. It was also discovered that subterranean termites were active and the building was in need of structural repair. The Board approved moving the library to the Bornt building on Pellisier Road. The community will continue to have a hard copy library of books, a place for fellowship with each other and a...
David Schulgen, who made a career in the wind industry starting from its early days in the 1980s, had unambivalent feelings about wind energy when it arrived in the Tehachapi Mountains: "I hated wind turbines. We raised cattle in Oak Creek Canyon, and I liked to explore the hills around Tehachapi, and I didn't like the wind turbines coming in." His feelings toward the wind industry evolved. But it took some time. The wind industry still didn't exist in the area when Dave graduated from...

In 1914, there were only two cars registered in Tehachapi – one belonged to Phil Marx and the other one was my dad's. My dad had one of those old Baby Grand Chevrolets and Marx had a Winton 6. There were stockyards all along the railroad tracks then, down by Mill Street and where Tehachapi Lumber had their yard. They put all the stock in those pens and loaded them up on the train to take them out of here. People drove their stock on foot, right through town. Johnny Brite, he raised free-ranging...
The situation in Tehachapi regarding the COVID-19 emergency can be summed up in this exchange March 21 at the Dollar Tree: Customer to the clerk at checkout: "When do you expect...?" Clerk (before the question is completed): "Tuesday." Interpretation: The supplies are coming, and they are arriving every day. Don't panic. While grocery shoppers are alarmed at the strange sight of empty shelves in America, the supply lines are open while truckers, stockers and clerks are working hard, and there...
