Ronald "Ron" Wayne Depew, a beloved member of the Tehachapi community, passed away on Oct. 25, at the age of 74, following a brief battle with cancer. With his smooth baritone voice, trademark beard and handsome appearance, Ron had a remarkable presence that positively impacted every room he entered. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Born on May 23, 1949, in Visalia, California, Ron was the son of Jack and Mabel Depew. He attended Mt. Whitney High School and later pursued higher...
Once again in this season of thanksgiving, I find myself struggling a little about what to say about being thankful, as no matter what I say or think, I am painfully aware of all the suffering going on in the world today. I know that in spite of all the mass shootings, ugliness and uncertainty in our country – not to mention the out and out war going on in the world at large – there is always something to be thankful for. And I am thankful, even as I also know I have much more to be thankful for...
Albertsons and Save Mart have supported The Salvation Army's Thanksgiving meal program, and our church's collection for this worthwhile program, for the last 14 years. My church, the Tehachapi Community Church, recently collected from our congregation to provide Thanksgiving dinners for The Salvation Army to distribute to less fortunate families in Tehachapi. Donations were accepted during Sunday services and online at the church's website, www.tccucc.org. When called on, Save Mart and...
In this issue we will continue the discussion begun in The Loop newspaper's Oct. 28 issue describing 7 end-of-summer car care tips. Check the battery Summer is an easy time for the car battery, but cold weather can tax it. Don't get caught by the first cold morning with a dead battery. First, look for corrosion on the battery terminals. This needs to be cleaned or repaired to eliminate resistance between the battery and the rest of the electrical system, such as the starter and blower. Then,...
Women meet challenges as they seek equity. This was the topic for American Association of University Women at their November meeting when Shane McGarrett told about her life journey spending 45 years in aerospace. She was just 17 years old when she joined the military. After three years in the United States Air Force, she became one of the first women to be fully trained and certified as a jet engine mechanic at March Air Force Base. McGarrett wrote about the struggle to achieve her goals in...
One of the most interesting of our local habitats to explore and to experience the outdoors is also one of the Tehachapi Mountains' most widespread and interesting: the oak woodland. This plant community is abundant in Central and Southern California, and found throughout the Tehachapis. Locally, it consists primarily of Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) and Blue Oak (Quercus douglasii) trees interspersed with Gray Pines, California Buckeyes, Mountain Mahogany, Buckbrush, Great Basin Sagebrush and a...
The Tehachapi Mountains have at least some snow every winter, but you can make sure that your yard has plenty snowballs even in drier years if you plant a Snowball Bush or two. These appropriately named shrubs produce large, globular white blossoms that do in fact resemble carefully crafted snowballs. In spring they are loaded with flowers, and they will bloom for weeks. There are a number of different species of Viburnum that are referred to as "Snowball Bush," including the European Snowball...
It isn't often that one of our local Honor Flight recipients is a woman, but this year proved to be an exception. Well-known and long time resident, Diane Griffin, was the 2023 honoree. Her flight departed Oct. 16 and returned on Oct. 18. And, even more unusual was the fact that three other Honor Flight recipients were also female, as well as their guardian Kay Philips of Tehachapi and bus leader, Arlene Aninion. Both were veterans themselves. Each person had one regulation bag that they were...

Resources represented at the fair included: therapy dogs (Bear Valley Springs Tailwaggers Dog Club), therapeutic horseback...

Every November, Tehachapi High School (THS) students gather for an assembly to honor the brave men and women who have served their country and protected our freedoms. Immediately after entering the doors my fellow students and I realized that this assembly was going to be a powerful celebration of our nation's heroes. With red, white and blue balloons forming a tall rendition of the American flag and a foam sculpting of an equally patriotic-colored eagle hanging from the ceiling, it was clear...

Why is the raven like a writing desk? That is the important first question in the novel "The Wishing Game" by Meg Shaffer. I was delighted to find this book because it had a raven in it and fit so nicely with the Raven serial in this issue. The raven in this story is both a riddle and real. Author Jack Masterson is an eccentric man who wrote a series of very successful children's books about Clock Island and the adventures of children searching for wishes. Masterson has a pet raven he rescued...
This is the last installment of the Raven serial. Previous installments can be found in the last three editions of The Loop newspaper. Added into the following is a submission by Shaun Barnes. Our world is truly a magical place full of wonders and mystery. Perhaps you have been noticing more ravens these days? They say to wat...

When I was a child of 5 or so, our family had to drive from Mojave to Lancaster to see a movie. Mojave had no theater at that time. The 25 miles on the old Sierra Highway was accomplished in my father's Model T Ford Truck. Since I was the youngest I sat in front with my mother and father. My two older brothers and sister sat in the back or bed of the truck. That's the way it was and no one said anything about it. The sides of the highway in certain parts of the year had underground aquifer...
At their Nov. 13 meeting, the Tehachapi Planning Commission approved the Architectural Design and Site Plan for a Burger Bros drive-thru restaurant to be located at 1001 W. A variety of topics were brought to vote at the Nov. 20 Tehachapi City Council meeting, from declaring surplus land to approving a project for a $160,000 sewage pump screw replacement. A new fats, oils and grease ordinance is in the works, and Community Engagement Specialist Mya Acosta was excited to promote the upcoming Tehachapi Hometown Christmas event on Dec. 2. A total of 27.3 acres west of Sand Canyon is currently owned and unused by the city. The land, which would best be suited for cattle grazing or the like, has little use to the city...

On the afternoon of Veterans Day, over 50 people attended the dedication of a bench located in front of the American Legion Hall located on F Street.
