I love a good story and hate when it ends. Have you ever felt that way? Do you miss your favorite characters and wish to know what else they might be doing? Or perhaps something happened in your book and you want it to have a different result? I am forever altering stories in my head, especially to create happy endings. There is actually a name for this process. It is called fan fiction. There is a controversy whether the term itself should be fan fiction or fanfiction. Either way, it...
Years ago we used prompts in our writing group, a single word, an interesting sentence, a unique or even rather regular object, and our pens would fly as our imaginations created a story around the challenge. Fan fiction is like a gigantic prompt. The set up and characters are already developed and in place. The writer can just jump right in and put their own spin into the original story, adding a new angle or event. When reading "Wool" by Hugh Howie, I couldn't help but wonder about all the...

He walks among us! No, not the Creature from the Black Lagoon. But Tom Carmody, who, with his team, has written a book. Amazon says it's "Hilarious, yet touching ..." "Memoir of a Stupid Jerk-head Face." Catchy? His son helped with the title. Google: "Tom Carmody stupid" and there it is. It tells us that God can use any life, and I mean any life, for His purpose and glory. We just need to give that life to Him. So let's tell you why you should read this book by first answering the question, who...
Detectives with the Tehachapi Police Department are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the male and female suspects pictured below. On Thursday, Aug. 24, the suspects stole electric tools from The Home Depot and Video Entertainment equipment from WalMart. The male suspect was wearing a dark colored t-shirt, blue jeans,...
Tehachapi High School's home opener two weeks ago was an important night for the THS football program and the community in general. After years of neglect and disrepair, and one year after an embarrassing home opener that included failed lighting, scoreboard and a broken sound system later in the season, Coy Burnett Stadium shined. This Friday was different thanks to the efforts over the last 12 months by members of the Tehachapi Warriors Booster Club board of directors, our members and the...
Anita and Jess Beltran moved to Tehachapi in March from Porter Ranch in the San Fernando Valley. It was Jess' friend of 50 years, Steve Rhodes, who suggested they look at Tehachapi as a place to live, and they fell in love with the area. Jess was born in San Fernando Hospital and raised in nearby Sylmar. At the age of 22, Jess started a custom upholstery business making seats for Harley Davidson motorcycles. He did this for 15 years before he was hired by the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Van Nuys w...
When I was asked to do photography for the Flight Test Museum Foundation at our local sailplane airport, I was delighted to help out. I grew up at Mountain Valley Airport learning to fly sailplanes. The owners, Jane and Larry Barrett, treated me like family. Larry gave me my FAA private and commercial flight tests. I was able to amass tons of glider time over 35 years of flying. I did over 1,800 commercial glider rides for the airport and had a blast doing it. I got to meet many famous people...
Red, yellow, and green are the various colors of apples. Local vendors will be bringing a variety of apples available in Kern County so that we can try to meet everyone's taste for delicious and nutritious apples. Besides apples we'll have apple pies, apple fritters, apple nachos, candy apples and other various apple delights. The Apple Festival is about so much more than apples, though. This festival is meant to bring families together to have fun. We have a large variety of games that we...

On Aug. 22, Tehachapi Unified School District held its second board meeting of the month. With the starting of the 2023-24 school year and the surprise visit from hurricane-force storms, there was much to discuss. My friend Constance has been on my mind for the last month or so. We've been good friends for several years now, even though we are very different from one another. We have lunch together every now and then, and we've taken some very fun day trips together. I've spent holidays at her home, and other days sharing cookies or popcorn and watching movies. She's been to my home, too. We're not the kind of friends that need constant interaction. Sometimes weeks or months go by between visits, but I...
Long-time Tehachapi resident and massage therapist, Molly Sherman of Tehachapi Therapeutic Massage has announced her retirement after providing her healing touch to Tehachapi since April of 1989. Before she was a massage therapist, Molly practiced foot reflexology, a type of therapeutic massage that she learned through books in the 1970s and practiced on friends and family. After experiencing a deep depression in 1984, she booked her first massage and immediately felt the physical and emotional...
Watching the presidential debates the other night I was reminded how much we use little jingles and catch phrases in marketing products and political points of view. We've all done it, I remember when I had my office in Los Angeles using a cartoon caricature of a rolled-up dollar with arms and legs and a scissor in his hands with a caption, "Why pay more? Pay less, call Marty Pay." Some of the campaign ads worked so well that we automatically think of the product when we hear the slogan. Who...
Tehachapi area residents got a quick glance of a passenger train last week as the new Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena was touring the line. Vena took over the position on Aug. 14. The photo was shot by Reuben Cortez, a Depot volunteer, near Caliente Creek between Bena and Ilmon....
Tehachapi is such a loving, giving and supportive community. While we are growing into a larger city, Tehachapi still feels like a small town, taking action and stepping up when members are in need. One would be hard-pressed to find a member here that is not involved in helping their fellow neighbor in some way, shape or form. These are the people and organizations we’d like to take the time to thank and honor for supporting the work of the Family Life Pregnancy Center and our clients. The center holds three fundraisers each year. Two of our f...

Ever wonder where they came up with the term "dashboard" for that part of your vehicle that sits behind the steering wheel? That name began back before cars were even invented. People used to travel by horse and buggy, and streets weren't as well built as they are today. On a muddy road (which was sometimes just a couple of ruts alongside a field), it wasn't unusual for those inside the buggy to have mud and stones "dashed" (knocked, thrown, or hurled) in their direction. So those who built carr...
The Tehachapi Mountains are blessed with scenic landscapes, picturesque wildlife, interesting weather and four distinct seasons. But in addition to these natural features, one of the treasures of our area has always been its people, and one of the true diamonds is a wonderful lady named Patricia Gracey, who will turn 95 on September 2 of this year. Pat Gracey was raised in Tehachapi and is a historian of our area, writing the Spirit of Tehachapi column for The Loop and writing in other...
“The people of this part of the county are very hopeful and appear to be alive to the prosperous future that cannot possibly escape them.” – Tehachapi Visitor This statement was taken from a letter written to the Havilah Miner on December 28, 1872, by a man who had just traveled through the Tehachapi Valley and offered this opinion of its residents....
