Most fans are simply perplexed about the stage of intercollegiate athletics now that the once proud "Conference of Champions" the Pac-12, has been gutted and reduced to four teams in 2024-25, thanks to the exits of most of their programs to other national conference over the last several weeks. As a former college athletics administrator, I can shed some light as to why this is all happening. It's a two-part answer: money and television. Streaming rights are important, but as the Pac-12 proved...
You can get a gigabit internet service package from Spectrum or Race to provide internet service at home or work. But do you need internet service that fast? We measure internet speeds in Mbps (megabits per second). 1 Mbps can transfer one million bits of data in a second, but that's not fast these days. So, a gigabit internet connection can deliver up to 1,000 megabits of data per second. Another way of looking at it is delivering a billion bits per second of internet goodness to your home or...

I was thinking of writing something else this evening for my column, but a sudden and surprising rainstorm happened and that got the memory center in my brain working. I love thunderstorms; I think I always have. I don't ever remember being scared in one, but I do have lots of memories of enjoying them. Having grown up mostly in the Midwest, I had plenty of opportunities for stormy experiences. One memorable storm was in Chariton, Iowa, the summer I was 12. The thunder and lightning were simulta...
Have you wondered if there are books out there for kids that don't involve magic, fantasy, wizards, vampires, werewolves or aliens? There are plenty, with themes that educate, fascinate and encourage young people to develop curiosity, build self esteem and lean into wonders of the world around them. Adventures in the realm of reality starts with "Britfield" by C. R. Stewart. The reader first finds children at the mercy of devious adults running an orphanage in northern England. In a deterioratin...

Chalk on the Walk 2023 was a huge success! With over 80 drawings completed, the sidewalks of Downtown Tehachapi became a magical gallery showing off the creative talent of our community. The atmosphere downtown was filled with an upbeat joyfulness. Tehachapi Valley Arts...
There is a species of gentle snake found throughout the Tehachapi Mountains, a familiar reptile with alternating light and dark rings the length of its sinuous body. Though it is non-venomous, and doesn't seem very imposing, this snake is actually the undisputed ruler of the local reptile world, as so has been given a regal name: the Kingsnake. California Kingsnakes (Lampropeltis californiae) are typically fairly long, slender snakes with narrow heads that are not much larger than their bodies....
Hollyhocks are one of the few ornamental flowers that naturalize so well in the Tehachapi Mountains that they can thrive without any care or supplementary watering -- you can often see beautiful examples of them growing on roadsides, vacant lots or other neglected areas. They are among the first flowering species to have been cultivated in gardens, and there are references to them in literature that date back hundreds of years. They are considered one of the prime choices for traditional...

Officers were able to take Kovach into custody during a traffic stop, which a subsequent search of his vehicle revealed it contained approximately one pound of an explosive...

On July 29-30, 1945, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was traveling to Leyte in the Philippines. Unknown to anyone on board, it had just dropped off components of the first atomic bomb to Tinian Island, where they were to be assembled and eventually dropped on Hiroshima. Meanwhile, in the same area, the Imperial Japanese sub I-58 was looking for a target. Unfortunately, it found the Indianapolis. Six torpedoes were released from the sub and within 15 minutes the Indianapolis, along with 300...

Few would elect to be in a major disaster, but if you've experienced one, there is a kinship with those who also shared the catastrophe that creates a lasting camaraderie. People sometimes ask, "What were you doing when Kennedy was shot?" The same question about Sept. 11, 2001. Many just call it 9/11. We all remember events such as those but as time passes, and the people who were there also pass, the event itself dims. Franklin Roosevelt said that the attack on Pearl Harbor is a date that...

Where can you find a Swiss Chalet styled building, decorated with American Indian style images, built into a rocky butte in the middle of the desert? I'll tell you where: east of Lancaster, that's where. Driving down CA-14 in Lancaster, I've seen the signs for the Indian Museum and Saddleback Butte State Park many times, indicating an exit onto Avenue K. I've driven down K a few times, but I've never driven far enough until one recent Sunday when I was determined to check both state parks out....
