  • A quick trip to Ojai

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

My friend Leila wanted to visit friends – Sandy and Baruska – in Ojai the other day, and I was delighted to be invited to join her. We took off about 9:30 in the morning and got to her friend's home, right in the center of Ojai, about 12:30. I know Ojai is a great destination for many reasons, but I also want to mention how much love the drive there. Once you get to the I-5 at Gorman you're in some pretty magnificent mountains... and, it should be mentioned, a whole lot of traffic. That doesn't...

  • What do sleep, shut down and restart do?

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Jul 22, 2023

What happens when you put your computer to sleep? What's the difference between restarting your computer, shutting it down, and turning it back on? Sleep When you put your computer to sleep, it goes into low-power mode. In this mode, the display turns off, your computer saves its current state (open files or browser tabs, etc.) to memory, and it stops sending power to most hardware. As long as your computer is getting power, when you turn it back on, it will start up instantly, and look just...

  • Have bag, will travel

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

Anybody who has done any traveling in this post COVID and 9/11 world has experienced the rush of having your luggage in one zip code while you're in another. The only other equal rush is watching your bag go left instead of right on the turnstile which means you get to wait for a customs officer to go through your bag with a fine-tooth comb (as long as it's regulation length). Murphy's Law being what it is, this event will always happen when you've got only a few minutes to make a flight due to...

  • A couple of thoughts...

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

Freefall with your gift Wynona Judd was on "Good Morning America" one time a few years ago, talking about the stage fright she always gets before she performs for live audiences. Even though she is a seasoned performer, she said she still gets nervous every time she goes on stage. She also said her nervousness mostly disappears after the first song or two, and then she feels all right. The important thing here, the thing that makes me remember this interview, is that even though Wynona...

After a very cool spring and early summer, high temperatures have finally caught up with us, and reached about 98 or 99 degrees Fahrenheit here over the weekend of July 15 and 16. Not record-setting, but still definitely hot. The hottest official temperature ever recorded in July in Tehachapi was in 1934, when the mercury reached 105 degrees. • Hat Ranch: the graveyard for lost hats of the unwary

    Jul 22, 2023

Tehachapi Pass and Oak Creek Pass are known for being windy (hence all the wind turbines), which is typical of mountain passes. But the nearby desert town of Mojave has breezes that range from mild zephyrs to irrational blustery gales, and there are times when the wind never seems to abate. And it was the wind that once created a most unusual crop on a piece of desert land outside Mojave. Local residents called the patch of brush the "Hat Ranch" because anyone could go there and get any style...

  • Bring new life to your yard this year

Rick Gillies, Mountain Gardens Nursery & Pet, contributing writer|Jul 8, 2023

So far this year, we have published articles on pest control, as well as pre and post-emergent herbicides. Today will be a little more general. As I head down streets in Tehachapi and Golden Hills, I see work that needs to be done in the yards. Either dead trees or shrubs, trimming, bug problems, trash, etc. This would be a good year to get that yard in shape like it used to be, and it's always nice to have something new to look at! Consider planting perennials such as Asiatic Lilies (blooming...

  • Jawbone Station and Red Rock Canyon State Park

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jul 8, 2023

One bright and sunny day a couple of weeks ago I decided to take a drive up the 14 to Red Rock Canyon State Park. Along the way I stopped at the Jawbone Station Visitor Center. It turned out to be a great day for a great scenic drive. I visited the official Jawbone Station first (not to be confused with the Jawbone Jct., right next door, which is a commercial enterprise that rents off-road vehicles, among other things), where I spent a little time outside the station hoping to spot Mr. Bob. Mr....

  • Who stole my crystal ball?

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Jul 8, 2023

Home builder sentiment is up again, and there is talk of the start of another Bull Market. All the while some prognosticators are telling us a recession is waiting in the wings by the end of the year! Where is my crystal ball to help me wade through the morass of conflicting reports from so many so-called experts? What would my crystal ball tell me? Would it tell me that 5-7 stocks are leading this Bull Market? Would it tell me I should be worried about the rise in artificial intelligence? Is th...

  • iOS and battery optimization

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Jul 8, 2023

The first generation of cell phone batteries were Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) batteries. NiCad batteries were toxic (the Cadmium part,) heavy, had overheating issues and developed a memory effect from charging cycles. This memory effect was the source of the old advice to drain your phone down to 0% battery before charging it again. Along came Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. NiMH batteries got rid of the toxic cadmium, developed less of a memory effect and got more power into a smaller space....

  • Chaos in the Tehachapi Mountains

    Bob Alvis, contributing writer|Jul 8, 2023

Aviation Cadet Paul Day was looking at his instruments and straining to hear any communications over the sound of his radial engine, as he flew blind in the clouds all alone. What seemed like just another routine training flight had now become a struggle for life itself, as he and more than a dozen other young aviation cadets came face to face with the dangers of flying - not in combat, but facing the wrath of the one adversary that has plagued aviators for generations: the weather. March 18,...
