Tom Carlson is a songwriter, singer and musician based in Tehachapi. His music tends to combine elements from traditional American folk music, Kern County's rich country music influences and from the cowboy ballads that he grew up listening to. Carlson has played fiddle for most of his life. A hobby that brought him to stages throughout the western United States, playing with bands and, as a youth, competing in Oldtime Fiddle competitions. It was while he was attending college in Northern...

While many would like to avoid the subject of drug overdoses, it has been estimated by the California Department of Public Health that in 2021 there were over 21,000 drug overdoses, 7,175 of those reported overdoses ended in death. Keeping that in mind Cornerstone Center for Counseling and Discipleship on J Street in Tehachapi has, in their dedication to its community members, become a trained distribution center of Narcan. “Narcan is a medication that can be administered by anyone with a little training, especially with the nasal spray that w...
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, William James Evans, "Bill". He was born on Dec. 9, 1933, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, and passed on Feb. 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bill was a pharmacist with CCI. Some of his hobbies include being an avid stamp collector and antique collector. He also enjoyed woodworking, creating stained glass and home improvements. He was always working with his hands on one project, with another project on deck. He loved reading, sports and he...
Many shelters are full clear across our great country. There is no more space, and pets, especially dogs, are being euthanized daily. People are giving up their dogs due to housing problems, lack of funds, lack of time for pets and to family growth. Sometimes a new child means the pet has to go. There are no adopters, rescues are feeling hopeless and shelters must put the dogs to sleep. You are the only hope your dog has. On a typical day, an organization like Have A Heart Humane Society receives a minimum of seven phone calls asking if we can...
We would like to invite you to our annual “Field Day” June 23-25. This event is put on by the National Association for Amateur Radio, the ARRL. This will take place in Bear Valley Springs, Tehachapi, at the High Country Park. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is a radio contest that gives us a chance to practice using radios in the field, using different modes and sharing kno...
First off, let's talk about all those initials in the headline. EV stands for an electric vehicle. And ICE stands for internal combustion engine, at least in this case. An EV has no gasoline engine and gets its power from a large battery needing external power. Technically, that leaves out all the hybrid vehicles with a battery and a gas engine, but I'll lump hybrids and EVs together for this column. We see news stories of EVs that catch fire, usually with the word "mysteriously" tossed in...
Tehachapi Heritage League is conducting a silent auction of three items: an American flag, flown over the U.S. Capitol this July 4th and provided by Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Judy McCarthy; a DVD about the 1952 earthquake with a t-shirt; and a cement bag from Monolith Cement plant. The silent auction will end at 1 p.m. on July 4. Winners need not be present. Silent auction forms are available at the Tehachapi Museum, 310 S. Green St. The flag will take about 4-6 weeks to arrive, but the other items will be available immediately. For...

To the left of the library is a small green suggestion box where messages can be left for the Healthcare District...
The use of computer apps and the availability of self-publishing has been a gift to the reading community. Instead of meeting rejection at every step in the publishing world, new authors can have the satisfaction of seeing their characters come to life, page by page, when publishing their manuscripts themselves. The opportunity is also available to create book covers, ones that truly reflect the author's stories in ways that intrigue the casual browser. With the ease of new technology, art is...
Councilmember Philip Smith informed of progress updates for a truck-climbing lane to be added to the CA-58 Hwy from Keene to Caliente at the June 5 meeting. Mayor Pro-Tem Joan Pogan-Cord noted that Councilmember Smith has been dedicated to this project and has expressed the need for truck-climbing lanes on CA Hwy-58 for nearly 30 years as he has served on the City Council. CA Hwy-58 has become the second-most traveled highway in California. State Senator Shannon Grove has previously stated verbal support, but Councilmember Smith reported that...

Once again, hello, Tehachapi! Several of you out there have expressed a certain amount of curiosity regarding my unusual name, so here it goes. One thing, I must confess to a small error. My first name is Lilliputs, not Lilliput. Perhaps not a big deal, I mean, I'm only 2-years old so it's a wonder that I can spell at all! My first name represents where I was born, Lilliputs Lodge Irish Draughts in County Kildare, Ireland. Nobleman, my second name, is in honor of my sire (horse dad), Cappa...
Caliente, California is a quick trip for Tehachapi railfans to see the interesting Horseshoe Curve. The day I went I saw seven trains in a period of three hours, which included a Southern Pacific Heritage Series 1996 and a BN Santa Fe Warbonnet. The Horseshoe Curve at Caliente is on the Union Pacific railroad Mojave sub-division, part of the old Southern Pacific Los Angeles to San Francisco Valley route. This route was built between 1875 and 1876. The curve is about a three mile drive downhill...
When Bud Lutge first started coming to Tehachapi in 1936, in many respects it was like another world from the Tehachapi of today: there were only about 1,000 people living in town and perhaps two hundred more in all the outlying areas combined, just a few roads were paved, and Bud's father Harry Lutge owned a 1,200-acre cattle ranch that stretched from Highline Road all the way up Water Canyon and encompassed the small lake and all the property now belonging to the Norbertine Associates of St....
Many organizations in Tehachapi are run by enthusiastic, hard working volunteers, and the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum is no exception. We depend on our volunteers to operate and maintain the museum for the benefit of our many visitors who come to learn about our local railroad lore. So, what is it our volunteers actually do? First of all, we have a board of directors who provides guidance and direction to the museum staff. Behind the scenes there are several groups who make the museum...

The last year has come and gone faster than I could have imagined. It feels like only a few months have passed since Cornerstone reopened, but we have been serving the community for over a year. On May 25, Cornerstone celebrated a year serving Tehachapi with an official grand opening and Narcan training. For me, the event felt surreal. I did not expect so many people from the community to show their support. After the event I sat down with several of Cornerstone's clients, who volunteered for th...
The Tehachapi Gem and Mineral Society, TVGMS for short, will be hosting a fundraising day full of fun activities, with proceeds to benefit the Tehachapi Senior Center at 500 E. F St., on June 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The parking lot will be filled with donated “yard sale” goodies and treasures – you just might find exactly what you’re looking for. This year’s yard sale will be extra-large as TVGMS, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was recently donated an entire estate/moving sale including furniture and appliances. We appreciate the suppo...
I developed my subtitle speed reading skills when I was trying to find something interesting and new to watch on TV. I was frustrated as I scrolled through thousands of possible choices, but everything seemed too familiar and too predictable. The predictability, as well as my habit of speeding to the end to see if it is worth watching, made me reject many possibly satisfying shows. Every suggested movie on the list was almost exactly what I had already seen. I longed for new adventures...
After an absence from the art community for more than a decade, the Arts Center is happy to welcome back artist Kathleen Wolf. She will be the instructor for our July Paint night held on Saturday, June 15. She's fun friendly and we're looking forward to having here. Our artist of the month Anya Lathrop's display of embroidered art is like nothing you've ever seen before. What appear to be small paintings, are incredibly detailed and artfully composed embroidered works of art. With some of the...
We received great feedback on The Loop’s magazine, Experience Tehachapi, from a reader who traveled through Tehachapi recently. Dear Editor, My wife and I stayed overnight in Tehachapi on a trip to central California at Christmas time last year. I picked up a copy of your excellent publication, “Experience Tehachapi.” We travel a lot and I pick up publications to see what is going on in the place we are at. This was a most professional and well done publication, probably the best I have ever...
The Tehachapi community continues to give. On May 24, 84 people offered to donate blood products at the blood drive. From that number, 67 successful whole blood donations were received, six additional units of blood platelets and seven units of plasma. This drive also had eight first-time donors. "Houchin Community Blood Bank, Tehachapi Vineyard Church, Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District and the City of Tehachapi collaborate every two months to coordinate these life-saving blood drives for...
