I like to believe that I am not a sucker, but I am easily persuaded to assist a friend in need or do something that benefits the kids. Combine the two and have it benefit kids in athletics and I am unable to say no. Yes, it is a curse and yes, my wife is constantly annoyed at my lack of ability to say no. But a couple of times this season I have been asked by my friend and fellow Warriors press junkie Tom Shea to fill in for him as public address announcer for Warrior basketball so he could trav...
Each year TVAA challenges local photographers to show off their best photos. The contests, held every February and August, provide local photographers with a chance to display their favorite photos, earn a ribbon or two and even the possibility of going home with a cash prize for their efforts. The first contest in 2005 featured photos by over two dozen photographers. Over the years the contest has gone through some amazing transformations, growth, and in the aftermath of COVID, some struggles...

The year, 1918, found Woodrow Wilson as President of the United States. Not only that, the U.S. was in the midst of World War I which was called, "The war to end all wars." This happy little girl was the daughter of Catherine and Jacob Pointek, both arriving to this country from Austria. She and her siblings grew up in a loving,...
Tehachapi Community Church, on the corner of E and Green Streets, is helping those who made New Year resolutions about healthy food choices find success. The Church wants members to be successful, and this may be a first step. Many churches have time to come together after their worship services. This time can have many names, such as Coffee Hour, Friendship Time, Community, and Connections. It can be a wonderful time to speak with others who share the same faith. It extends the service when...

Is anyone ready to participate in an archeological dig? Books and movies provide us with a rich and entertaining experience of humanity's exciting past. The movie "King Solomon Mines," first introduced as a book by Sir H. Rider Haggard, brought us the story of Alan Quartermain searching an unexplored region of Africa for gold...

Our Toys for Tots Drive normally ends up close to 1,000 toys between our "Christmas In July" and Christmas campaigns. This year our city really came through for our kids. During the December toy drive alone, we ended up with just over 1,100 toys! We had some businesses who really came through for us this and every year. Tehachapi Martial Arts had a few hundred toys, while Save Mart and Flying J brought over several toys on their own. Miramar and Country Real Estate are other locations that had...

Since the Tehachapi Mountains can get very cold in winter, and we usually have snow, you may wonder if any creatures in our area hibernate to avoid the coldest months. Let's look at how local animals cope with the cold. Black Bears are well-known for hibernating, at least in areas with severe winters, but the picture is more complicated in an area with mixed or open winters like Tehachapi. The term "open winter" refers to areas that get snow and cold, but may also have much warmer periods...
When most people think about Tehachapi and fruit trees, the first type that comes to mind are apple trees. This is appropriate, since fine quality apples have been grown in the Tehachapi Mountains since some of the first settlers planted apples here in the 1850s and 1860s, but honestly there are easier choices for home gardeners. Apples are vulnerable to an insect pest known as the coddling moth (the worm in the apple), and you usually have to do something to control them -- commercial...

The wonky, wildly windy weather we've had lately, along with counting my blessings in this new year and remembering that sometimes I just luck out for no apparent reason, made me think back on one particular long-ago tornado experience. One summer day circa 1974 a friend and I went to the softball fields in Oklahoma City to watch some good tournament slow pitch. The weather was iffy to say the least – rain threatened, and tornados were forecast – but that was a common summer occurrence in the So...
When I was about 5 and 6 years old (in 1933 and 1934) I was learning to read and could figure out printed words. On Sunday morning, about 10 a.m., a man came on the radio and read the comics to me. Oh, how good he was. He made it sound so real. Later on, as I read better, I'd say to my brother, "He left out a line!" My brother told me he had gone over his time and was hurrying before the program was over. I remember "The Captain and the Kids" by Rudolph Dirks. We just called it, The...
Do you dream? Do you have a dream? These are actually two separate things. Some nights we have dreams and wake to remember them. They can be happy, sad, scary and dark or full of light and love. Consciously, awake, we can also dream. We can dream of a better life, dream of finding love and happiness, dream of winning the lottery or an Olympic gold medal. Those dreams are purposeful hopes, building our desires like Lego bricks with layers of possibilities. The more plausible the hope, the more...
I think I can safely say, personally, 2022 was a year unlike any other. I know most of us following 2020 would rather not see those words again but harkening back to my days behind a microphone when a player would have one of those standout games it was second nature to say, "have a day kid." I guess one could say I "had a year" in 2022. There are plenty of highlights to share personally and professionally, but the journey most of you have been on with me has been my running transformation, and...

Have you heard of this new thing, Web 3.0, also known as Web3? It's the future of the internet, they tell us. But what is Web3, and whatever happened to Web1 and Web 2? If there were such things? We refer to the first publicly available version of the internet as Web 1.0. In this version of the internet, web pages were collections of read-only pages, and there was almost no interactivity with the page you were on. You read it, and that was it. Little efforts by major corporations and small...

For as long as I can remember I've been a basketball fan, particularly of the girls' and women's game as I was a player myself. So, after many years of living here in Tehachapi and only watching college and pro games on TV, I decided to make a trip down to California State University in Bakersfield to watch a Roadrunner game. My friend Julee – who is generally and happily "up for anything" – went with me last Saturday to watch the Roadrunners play the UC Davis Aggies. Not having been there bef...
