While most traditional winter driving techniques are still helpful today, modern vehicle design has introduced a number of wrinkles into how to safely get from point A to point B with snow and ice on the ground. New safety systems and driver's aids have transformed how cars and trucks handle the winter, however, giving you fresh options for dealing with bad-weather driving. Here's a look at how winter driving techniques have been affected by the latest automotive technology. Stability control...

The first giveaway drawing was our 2022 Fall Merchandise Book in which two winners were drawn at random, each of the winners were awarded $500 to spend on items of their choice within the catalog. The second drawing was for a colossal sized stocking, which hung at the front counter for all children, and...
Have you ever received an email that looked like it came from you, but you didn't send it? Self-spam is happening a lot now, and it's usually tied to a blackmail or shaming scheme. Forging or faking an email address is called spoofing. And it's easy. Most email systems don't have security checks to ensure the person in the email's "From" line is who they say they are-with billions of email addresses and thousands of email servers worldwide, verifying that "From" address is impossible. So all an...

The Tehachapi Community Theatre Association (TCTA) is extending an open call to all local thespians to audition for the classic version of "CLUE, On Stage," based on the screenplay by Johnathan Lynn and directed by Tehachapi's own: Jason Wheeler. You do not have to be a member of TCTA to audition! The classic board game will be brought to life at the BeeKay Theatre for three weekends in April when six guests, invited to a dinner party thrown by an...

Phillip died tragically at a young age in an automobile accident. Arthur left the family when Nathan was just 3 years old, and Ruby raised the children as a single mother. They lived in and around the Los Angeles area, primarily in the suburbs of Lynwood, Compton and Downey, for the duration of Nathan's...
If you want to learn more about the Native Americans of the Tehachapi Mountains, the first two things to do are this: visit the Tehachapi Museum, and also pick up a book called Handbook of the Kawaiisu. This unique book was a life accomplishment of a remarkable Nuwä elder named Harold Williams. Harold was a leading tribal member of the Nuwä, the Tehachapi Indian people, and he realized a longtime dream with the 2009 publication of Handbook of the Kawaiisu, a book he co-authored with a...
A friend of mine, Manney Cowan, grew up here and lived in Tehachapi, and people used to pay him to live-trap nuisance animals from their yards and relocate them to remote areas. He'd trap raccoons that were peeling up sod looking for worms and other invertebrates to eat, or catching the fish out of people's ponds, or skunks that were under structures, that kind of thing. One time he was catching skunks (there's seldom only one) that were living under a shed in Bear Valley Springs. I went with...
After a long wait, the election results were certified. The CSD office in Bear Valley Springs was the site of the swearing in of three candidates who won the seats on the board. At a special Board Meeting on Dec. 21, with a full house of community supporters, Director of Human Resources, and Assistant to the General Manager, Kristy McEwan, swore in these new Directors for the Board. Acting President, Terry Q...

Letter writing, once the optimal form of communication across the miles, from street to street, city to city, state to state, and country to country around the world, has been diminished to short texts, quick emails and TikTok antics. Such a shame really, as letter writing was quite the accomplished art in its time. When I was a child, I faithfully wrote letters and thank yous to my grandparents who sent birthday cards with a dollar bill slipped inside. When I turned 8 or so, my letters changed...
What happens to a Christmas Card for Veterans, our Project DEFT (Don't Ever Forget Them), once the card arrives at our office? What's the journey a typical card takes from the author to the veteran? I've changed the names but the following story tells the trip so many cards have taken in the years we've been blessed to be a part of this project. Sally is an elementary school student here in Tehachapi. She has designed her own cards for our veterans. One in particular had a Christmas tree on the...
Chances are, you live in Tehachapi because you love it. You find it special somehow. Can you describe it? Let's see how some of your neighbors feel about Tehachapi: It's quiet. Mountainous. Beautiful scenery. Good barbecue. No smog. We were just in L.A. for a conference, and there was that horrible traffic, and the people that come with it – you can escape all of that here. – Juan It sounds so cliché, but I love the four seasons! Geographically, it's just a beautiful place. In Stallion Spri...
Earlier this year USC and UCLA both announced their intentions to move from the Pac-12 Conference to the Big 10, a move driven by more television revenue for their institutions, a better placement on the national stage and potentially more NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) money for their student-athletes. While USC is a private school and can do whatever they would like, there has been some opposition to UCLA's move, since they are a public University of California school operating within the...
Sierra Nevada Natural History By Tracy I. Storer and Robert Usinger 1963 University of California Press ISBN # 0-520-01226-7 While not specifically about the Tehachapi Mountains, this field guide documents the plants, animals, physical features and much more of the adjacent Sierra Nevada Range, so much of it is applicable to our area. With some photos and line drawings and hundreds of brief descriptions, it is a very useful and well-written guide to the natural world. Desert Country By Bob...
At the Dec. 5 City Council meeting, Public Works Director Don Marsh reported to the Tehachapi City Council that the city's Wastewater Division leases approximately 81 acres located on the north side of the airport from the Airport Fund. They use the wastewater effluent to grow fodder crops and alfalfa to be sold locally. The operation and maintenance of the project has been performed using city employees for years. Over the years the city had been approached by farmers and ranchers making...
