Kernville is like a magnet for me – I love making day trips into the whole Lake Isabella area for a variety of reasons, and many of them are in Kernville – and once I get started it's hard to stop. The town of Kernville is full of history and present-day activities, including river rafting and kayaking, fishing, wading in the river, camping, hiking, and shopping. The small downtown area features a number of antiques shops and gift shops, and of course there are great places to eat and drink as...
One of my favorite aspects of living in the Tehachapi Mountains is how vibrant and tangible the changing of the seasons can feel. The weather, the angle of sunlight, the temperatures, the plants and animals. . . they all shift and pulse seasonally. The longer you live here, the more expected and predictable these patterns are. Right now, we're in the golden days of autumn, and this is partly due to one of the most significant flowering events of the year in the Tehachapi Mountains: the annual...
Leatta "Tootie" Anderson was the definition of a local resident: not only was she raised in Tehachapi, her mother Ola Cuddeback Ford was born here in 1901, and Ola's mother, Francis Tungate Cuddeback, was born in Old Town in about 1873. Tootie's grandmother, Francis Tungate, was from an early ranching family and she married Jess Cuddeback, from another pioneer ranching family. At one time the Cuddebacks owned most of the land that now comprises Golden Hills. For 71 years Tootie was married to...
Every time we hear about a data breach, we know that a new bunch of usernames and passwords were just stolen and are about to be used against us. Somehow, and by somebody. But how do you tell if they stole YOUR email address and or password? You can always check by going to www.haveibeenpwned.com and entering your info, but wouldn't it be handy to have something that could check for you, something you already have on your computer? Google has a tool for the Chrome browser that will alert you...
At the Oct. 20 Rotary meeting, a representative from Adventist Health, Theresa Delgado, spoke on the Home Health offerings from Adventist. Home Health Services allow for patients to recover at home and still receive care from health professionals. The goal is to improve the quality of life and increase energy, comfort and strength. Many of the rotarians had questions about the services. What kind of home care can you receive? Your physician can give a referral for a nurse to visit your house to...

A slight error on the upcoming November 8 ballot has created some confusion. You will see on the ballot under Measure X an opportunity to bubble in "Bonds Yes" or "Bonds No." Please know this is a mistake. Measure X is not a Bond. Measure X is a proposition asking voters to approve a new 30-year lease between Adventist Health and the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District. A "YES" vote for the measure ensures that Adventist Health will construct -at no cost to the taxpayer - a new, state-of-the-ar...

It was fantastic to see local Tehachapi residents and car collectors Hans and Rachel Kahl at the California Hot Rod Reunion. The Kahls own a sister Superbird, which is blue and is displayed at shows, as well. Hans and Rachel own many collector cars and are active in the car show circuit in Kern County. The Apple Festival, on Oct. 15-16, was hugely successful, and the public truly enjoyed it from all reports. Once the event is up and running it may seem like a simple task, but the truth is, it takes a village to get it there. It starts in March with vendor applications being revised with new dates and rules. Throughout the following months we update Facebook, Instagram and Google with all the updates, as well as all sponsorship agreements. By the end of the summer the event is fully insured...
What began as a grassroots effort to save a swimming pool, has ended in a celebration of vision, partnership and hard work. On Friday, Oct. 21, a triumphant group of school leaders, community volunteers, business partners, government officials and local school children met at the Boron High School Swimming Pool to cut the ribbon and declare the pool "open!" The swimming pool, owned by the Muroc Joint Unified School District (MJUSD), hit hard times during COVID. Like the schools themselves, the...
I remember several years ago during a panel discussion between loan officers and real estate agents, the question got asked about whether we would ever see conditions like the early 2000s again. Many people chimed in with "no way," "it's unlikely" and simply "no, too many things have changed for that to ever happen"... but there was one opposite answer "we all have pretty short memories, so probably." Differing options on whether or not this is possible is at the forefront of people's minds....
