  • Terrors of Fairy Tales

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Oct 1, 2022

What activities did you use to wile away the long days of pandemic seclusion? I heard about a lot of bread making. Families dusted off board games and caught up on G-rated movies. Some people indulged in binge watching cable series they hadn’t had time for during busier schedules. Others got out their knitting needles and finally used their accumulated yarn stashes, making stacks of sweaters for their families, friends, pets and strangers. For singles, books were taken from the “someday I will r...

    Linda Carhart, Linda Carhart|Oct 1, 2022

This is not an obituary but a story of a life well lived. At just two days before turning 101, my mom, Evelyn Dignam decided she was ready to leave this earthly plain. Her life, like so many, was full of ups and downs. She lived through the depression. Her childhood was not always a happy one, so much so, that she would rarely talk about it. Evelyn was a fighter and tried not to let things get her down. She married William Dignam from Bay Ridge Brooklyn in 1942. They loved and supported six...

  • Silver City Museum and Ghost Town

    Mel White-Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Oct 1, 2022

I had such a great time on a Sunday drive a few weeks ago that I decided to take another similar one last week. This time I took a different route to the Lake Isabella area – up and back down the canyon – specifically with the idea of visiting the Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish. And once again, the drive was just as entertaining as the destination. I headed out of Tehachapi on the 58 and took the Comanche exit, turning north toward the 178. A few miles later I turned right onto the 178, follo...

  • Cesar E. Chavez National Monument

    Mel White-Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Sep 17, 2022

The heat has been getting to me lately, as I'm sure it has gotten to you as well, and while gas prices are going down, they are still relatively high. Both of those factors prompted me to go somewhere close this time, just a short drive and to a mostly indoor, cooled destination. That destination was the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene, and it turned out to be a great little quick getaway (call it "half-day" trippin' instead of "day" trippin'). As is my usual modus operandi, I...

One look at the title of this article and many will move on. They will see the word accountability and the voice in their head will say, "No, thank you." Accountability is a catalyst for growth; spiritual, social, emotional, career, etc. Allowing others to speak into our lives offers the opportunity to see from new perspectives, hold to commitments and goals, and have relationships...

  • Files and folders

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Sep 17, 2022

We know that computers, phones, and tablets store files and folders on your device, but what are files and folders? Is it like in the movie Zoolander where Owen Wilson's character learns that the files he needs are IN the computer, so he drops it off a balcony and sorts through the debris, looking for the files he needs? Well, no. In an office, a paper file stores related documents together in a container or a drawer. For example, a file might have all the receipts from last year, the budget...

  • Locals share what's so special about Tehachapi

    Scott Ware, contributing writer|Sep 17, 2022

Chances are, you live in Tehachapi because you love it. You find it special somehow. Can you describe it? Let's see how some of your neighbors feel about Tehachapi: "Tehachapi has a quaint feeling that's endearing. Just the way the train station sits next to the bakery, across from the (Depot) museum. The lit-up Christmas tree and Christmas songs playing while you're walking down the street – so beautiful! The summer barbecues that raise money for the VFW. These things signify to me a small t...

  • The Flood of 1932 (part 1)

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Sep 17, 2022

(I wrote an account of the 1932 flood over 30 years ago for the Tehachapi News. I was lucky to find someone who had been in Keene when the waters washed away people, houses and even buried a Santa Fe Engine, as well as washed a Southern Pacific engine off the tracks . I carefully kept notes after talking to Walter Hicks, who was in Keene during the whole thing. I have not added anything to enhance the story; only the facts told me at that time, by Walter Hicks, Laura Ramos, Bob Freeman, Bud...

  • The mysteries of water

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Sep 17, 2022

For this review I have chosen two books that revolve around water, one a lake and one a river. In some respects they are very alike. Both contain mysteries. Both reflect life and death. In both the water holds secrets. The secrets draw groups of people into working together. The stories are both terrifying and tender. That is what they share on the surface. Yet, there are also so many differences. The first book, “The Big Dark Sky,” written by Dean Koontz takes the reader on a ride where adv...
