A rarity! A double headed BNSF Warbonnet 4718 (C44-9W) and 4713 (C44-9W); the units are over 25 years old. Word is BNSF is pulling these out of the stored line in Barstow, California to help out with the extra traffic they are experiencing. This paint job is a favorite of many rail fans that I have talked with at the Tehachapi Depot Museum. This paint job goes back to first generation diesel units when Santa Fe Railroad started replacing the steam locomotives in the 1950s with diesel...
While you’re out and about at the Tehachapi Mountain Festival be sure to stop by the Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society’s Jewelry, Gem and Mineral Show at the Tehachapi Senior Center. There will be lots to see and do for all ages. Vendors will be showing and selling beautiful showcase minerals, fossils, polished rocks, beads and handcrafted jewelry. This might be just the place to pick up a unique Christmas or Birthday gift for that “hard to shop for” friend or relative. The Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society will have the always...

While the culture of year-round travel sports keeps most of us on our toes these days, in my world the official start of the sports season is a few weeks away as football kicks off at various levels. With that kickoff, which for many will include a variety of sports over the next nine to 12 months for their kids, comes undue pressure from adults to punch their ticket to the next level. Parents, let me save you a lot of heartache, your child is not receiving a full-ride scholarship. There, I...
If I had not read Jon Hammond's article about King snakes, I probably would not have thought about our long ago family dog, Brownie. Brownie was older than I was, having come along about two years before I showed up. He was brown and black and someone told us he was probably part Airedale. I would not know an Airedale if I met one on the street so I'll just assume they were right. Brownie loved us and was a good companion. Brownie did not like snakes. Maybe he did like to find them for he...
Modern computers have built-in web browsers, Microsoft Edge for PCs and Safari for Macs. And it's just fine to use the Edge or Safari browser to spend time on the internet. But here are some reasons for you to have another browser on your computer, too. The people that develop websites have a pretty tough job these days. A website must work on any browser, computer, brand, or size phone or tablet. Sometimes they don't get it right, and you'll find yourself on a website that doesn't look right...
If you are reading this article, I am assuming you are at least thinking about an estate plan. So let's continue! What are the benefits of a Living Trust? A trust does not get filed with the court. A will does. Transferring your biggest assets into a trust makes it a whole lot easier for your heirs – I should say kids, to manage your assets upon your death. The person you name as the successor trustee can manage your assets if you become incapacitated. It can also be highly customized to fit y...
The Tehachapi Warriors Booster Club would like to thank Maria Curiel for her years of service as President of our organization. Her selfless leadership and diligence helped keep the Booster Club on track during some difficult times. But we have come through those challenges stronger than ever. Following her second stint as president, Curiel resigned her position on July 13 prior to the start of the 2022-23 athletic season and installed Corey Costelloe as president. Curiel returned to the...

Marty Pay has been our local Farmers Agent for over 32 years. It was just announced that his office has made the prestigious Toppers Club award for the 25th year. His office is only the second in Kern County history to achieve this award 25 times. The award, made by less than 8% of the agents nationwide, is predicated on levels of service and sales in the previous year. Marty attributes obtaining the award to his incredible staff and fantastic clients. "I've been lucky over the years to have an...
On July 11, Tehachapi resident Mano Lujan drove his daughter Layla and son Milo back east, a trip of over 5,500 miles. They visited Flagstaff, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Monument, Colorado and the Rockies; Laramie, Wyoming; Custer's Battlefield, Montana; Black Hills and Mount Rushmore, South Dakota; Dyersville, Iowa; Cleveland, Ohio; Auburn, New York; stopped off at Layla's...
A small group of interested locals hiked to a canyon on Bear Mountain recently to visit a rock art site whose location had been lost in the fog of time. Among the hikers was Fred Fickert, 75, who first discovered the artwork almost 60 years ago, when he was a 16-year-old on horseback gathering cattle on his family's ranch, which later became Bear Valley Springs. Back in 1966, all of Bear Valley and most of Bear Mountain were owned by the Fickert clan. The family first moved to Bear Valley in...
Ernest Twisselmann was a rancher and the author of A Flora of Kern County, the definitive book of the 1,875 various species and subspecies of plants that he found growing in sprawling Kern County. He began collecting plant specimens in the Temblor Range at the western border of the county in 1952, and finished fieldwork in 1966. His book was published in 1967, when the Fickert family still owned Bear Valley. He was an amazing and inspiring man. Here are some excerpts from his book, which stands...
Are you "Living Up?" Tehachapi – Live Up is, of course, the city slogan as of a few years ago. People tend to be surprised that such an elegant elevation exists between the Bakersfield and Mojave flats, so we want to remind them they'd be "living up" in the mountains if they chose Tehachapi as their forever home. Some prospective newbies like the idea that Living Up also means upwardly mobile, but isn't that for people who are climbing the corporate ladder? Didn't we put all that away with b...
Robert "Bob" Allan Small passed away at age 79 in Tehachapi on May 20. He passed away in his home quietly after suffering several strokes over many decades. Bob was born Sept. 10, 1942, in Compton, California to Allan Ward Small (father) and Winifred Lynette Hartley (mother). He grew up with his older brother, Gary Ward Small. The family moved to Tehachapi when Bob was 8 years old. Bob had many fond memories of growing up in Tehachapi and working at his father's store, Tehachapi Lumber Company....
Sometimes I worry about world peace. I worry that no matter how noble a goal it is, it will never happen. I worry about this because of the constant reminders I see all around me that people can't get along in the smaller bits and pieces of life, never mind the larger picture (i.e. the whole world). And it seems to be getting worse these days as some people seem to be outright embracing and glorifying the ugly side of language and attitude and actions. So often, then, we seem to be living in a...
