    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|May 28, 2022

Budget season is undoubtedly a crucial time each year. With the City of Tehachapi operating on a July 1-June 30 fiscal calendar, we must work to adopt a new five-year budget in the month of June. While fiscal responsibility has served us well over the last few decades, the budget process this year is especially difficult thanks in part to the rising costs of basic contract services, including critical fire safety from the County of Kern, and a slew of unfunded mandates by the State of...

  • Happy Birthday to the floppy disk

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|May 28, 2022

Seven months too late, but better late than never, right? Fifty (plus!) years ago, IBM birthed the floppy disk, and, eventually, that's how publishers distributed new software and how we saved files on our computers. But why and how did the floppy disk come to be? Early mainframe computers used core memory that kept information even when the power was off. Next, the mainframe computer industry moved to solid-state transistor memory, which was great, except it couldn't keep things in memory...

  • Mapping it out

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|May 28, 2022

I remember traveling with my family on a 1,200-mile vacation, holding a big road map unfolded in my lap. I used a crayon to trace our progress and would mark off each town we passed. Then, I would look for the name of the next town ahead. Sometimes I would calculate how many miles we had left to drive for the day and how many miles left to finally reach our destination. It took several days to get there and I enjoyed the process. My love of maps started long before we ever took a vacation. I stu...

  • Indian Paintbrush: one of the fairest of them all

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|May 28, 2022

Among the most beautiful and eye-catching native wildflowers in the Tehachapi Mountains are members of the Castilleja genus, many of them known by a more familiar common name: Indian Paintbrush. These tend to be upright, feathery flowers in various shades of red, though some are yellow and others appear purple. Castilleja, pronounced "cass-till-LAY-hah," is a confusing genus of plants, partly because botanists are not in agreement about which members are full species, which are subspecies, etc....

  • 'And, where are you going?'

    Sheila Zanghi, contributing writer|May 14, 2022

I decided to hang up my trusty Pioneer True Value apron, after 39 years. As soon as the “For Sale” sign went up, I had customers pleading with me to keep it a hardware store. They said they needed a place where they can get the products and service and how-to information. One distraught customer told me he would pray hard that someone would buy it and keep it a hardware store and, by golly, the next day Karl’s Hardware (of Rosamond, Mojave and Boron) bought it! I joked that I should have kept th...
