While most of the horses that come to TVHR will live out the rest of their lives peacefully in the sanctuary located in the Tehachapi Valley, there are 10 horses in rehabilitation programs with plans to eventually find new forever homes. With a total of 25 horses at the sanctuary and an additional five in...
At Blooms, one of our goals when we started our business was to work with local Tehachapi growers when possible in order to source fresh flowers grown right here in Tehachapi soil. There are several advantages and benefits to using local sources. First, when we buy locally sourced flowers, we know exactly how old those flowers are, whether or not they have had pesticides used on them, and how they have been handled, basically from the seed stage to the cutting stage. Sometimes I even cut them my...
Let's talk about standby and portable generators. Stand-by generators are on a permanent pad and hooked to your natural gas or propane. They will start up automatically when the power goes off and shut off when it returns online. Portable generators need to be stored in the garage and brought out and plugged into a transfer switch then unplugged and restored when the power comes back online. Both generators are a great investment for your home or business, and it's all on your budget or your...
If a tree lives long enough in the right conditions, with a lifespan measured in centuries rather than years, it can grow so large that it dwarfs the rest of its kind. There is a Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) growing near California City that fits this description. It is simply a magnificent specimen, an amazingly large version of the familiar Joshuas that populate the Mojave Desert east of the Tehachapi Mountains. Different environments have what biologists call indicator species – d...

Among them were Tehachapi muralist Lyn Bennett painting en plein air at the Depot and 2024 Featured Artist Laura Wambsgans spent the day painting the vineyard at Tehachapi Wine and Cattle Company....
As always, the 3rd annual TNAZ Cruizin Car Show was a big hit on May 18. The show brought in more than 60 hot rods and custom cars. A fantastic mix of historical American cars from Ford to Chevy to Oldsmobile. My favorite was a local Tehachapi car. A 1937 Oldsmobile restored by Tom from Tehachapi. Originally Tom was trying to sell the Oldsmobile for a friend as a favor and he just could not find a buyer. So, Tom got the Oldsmobile for himself to work on. It turned out to be a labor of love...
Leadership, most people assume you’re born with the traits, but I think it’s more situational than most people might realize. Look at some of our national and international leaders to see what I mean. For decades, Winston Churchill sat on the sidelines when it came to his country’s leadership. Then when World War II started, the country instinctively reached for him and he was there rising to the pinnacle of leadership of the free world with his actions and his speech. He led a nation, but a...
Interested in local history? Mark your calendar now for the Friends of the Tehachapi Depot (FOTD) free event taking place Tuesday, June 11 at 6 p.m. in the Tehachapi Depot freight room. Bob will discuss the original Santa Fe railroad line that ran from Boron to Mojave, California. The line was relocated to its present location paralleling Highway 58 as a result of the expansion of...

Kern Codes offers a unique opportunity for Kern County students to demonstrate their ability solving...
"The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love." – Sportscaster, Bryant Gumbel That love was on display on May 14 when the Tehachapi Warriors varsity baseball team played their final game of the season in an 8-4 loss to Exeter in the CIF Central Section Division III playoffs, hosted here in Tehachapi. While it did not come out in favor of our Warriors, there were moments of the day that members of my family and I will never forget. Not only was it the first time in quite a while that t...

My earliest memories, as a child, involves lying in bed listening to the Mojave wind hitting the house with a strong whistling sound. It seems that the dust and sand can find its way into the house and sometimes in the morning we would find very fine dirt on the floor; enough for my brother to make roads for his toy cars My father, Chauncey Davis, once had a gas station on the highway that, in the past came through Mojave. Many travelers would stop for gas and ask, "Does the wind blow like this...
At the April 25 meeting of the Tehachapi Rotary Club, MaryBeth Garrison gave an interesting and inspiring presentation on the history of Cheers to Charity. Cheers to Charity, whose motto is "Eat, Drink, and Help Change Your World," began in 2014 in the parking lot of Veritas Tapas & Wine Bar, and the event continues to grow in size and popularity each year. Cheers to Charity is held second weekend of August, and they are celebrating 2024 with a theme of "A Decade of Doing Good." Their mission...
On Thursday, May 16, the Rotary Club of Tehachapi welcomed guest speaker, Ben Eshbach. Ben is a local Tehachapi resident who started the "Tehachapi Now" channel on YouTube. When he moved his family to Tehachapi in 2022, he was researching on YouTube to see what Tehachapi had to offer, and he found two things: 1) real estate and 2) trains. He knew that there was so much more to the community, so he set about finding the little local gems, businesses and stories that make Tehachapi a wonderful...
Francoise Aline Marie Roy Donohue, born on Sept. 9, 1935, in Montmagny, Quebec, Canada, passed away peacefully on April 26 at the age of 88. Francoise was the beloved daughter of the late Louis O. Roy and Marie-Anne Duchesneau Roy. A talented pianist, she was accepted to the Conservatory of Music of Quebec, where she nurtured her passion for playing the piano. Among her favorite pieces to perform were Mozart's "Piano Sonata No. 16" and "Rondo alla Turca." Despite her musical talents, Francoise...

Growing up she enjoyed fishing and backpacking on family vacations to the Eastern Sierras. She loved visiting her Nana and Papa (Tootie and Hooks Anderson) on Cherry Lane and Grandma Carrie in the "little red house." Leslie had a distinct smile and...
Our beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend Elizabeth Ann Searfoss passed peacefully to her heavenly home on May 8 with her mother by her side in Bear Valley Springs, following a courageous four- year struggle with cancer. As the City of Tehachapi prepares for construction of the ATP Dennison Sidewalk Project later this summer, SCE will begin relocating poles at the Valley Blvd. and Dennison Rd. intersection. Work began on May 20. The roads will remain open, but delays should be expected. SCE estimates the relocation effort to take about one month to complete. The City of Tehachapi urges parents and students of Tehachapi High School, Jacobson Middle School and Tompkins Elementary to be aware of potential traffic...
Cora Sweeney and Saida Woolf started off entering the Gallery 'N' Gifts Young Artist shows as students of Valley Oaks Charter School. It was shopping for trains at Hans' and Rachel's Gold Coast Station that originally brought Dawn Jones and her husband to Tehachapi. After living in a variety of locations and serving her country as a contractor in Washington D.C., Dawn found Tehachapi to be the best combination of all the places she had previously lived. She quickly became inspired by the town's beautiful nature and wildlife and relaunched her jewelry-making business, Dawn Jones Designs. Soon she was crafting earrings,...
After I visited the Rio Tinto Mine in Boron (see the last issue), I drove south on Borax Road to Twenty Mule Team Road to get to the Twenty Mule Team Museum and the Aerospace Museum, also in Boron. The museums are side by side on the corner of Boron Avenue and Twenty Mule Team Road, and right across the street from the 20 Mule Café (and a block down from Domingo's), making an easy stop to visit both and have lunch while you're there. I decided to visit the Aerospace Museum first. When the...
The name Klew has been a part of my identity for many years, beginning in high school when I decided to go by it instead of my given name, Karen Lewis. I found it to be a unique and stylish name back then, but I could never have predicted that it would become the name of my small business, Klew Expressions, which I established in 1988 to showcase my polymer clay art beads. I needed more space and rented a small studio in the industrial park on West J Street. Soon I began to get calls with people...
