Now that March is finally here, we're starting to see the first hints of green in Tehachapi. With the cold, wet winter, the weather seems more normal this year. The trees did not bud out in February, and the daffodils are just starting to push up their green spears. What a perfect year to celebrate "the wearing of the green" on St. Patrick's Day. To Fiddlers Crossing, it's all the more perfect because it comes on a Friday, which means there will be music in the popular downtown venue. A special...

A Brief History The City originally envisioned a motocross track on the airport grounds in 2006. The small triangle of land located north of the...

The weather web site mountainbase.com, based at Oak Knolls in Golden Hills, reports that the total rainfall for the first two months of 2017 at that site measured 9.52 inches. The rainfall came during two major storms, one on Jan. 5 and another on Feb., 17. The heavy storms damaged the dirt roads of eastern Sand Canyon, leaving them eroded, severely creviced and impassable. As they have done before, the residents worked together to fix the roads, which now are in good shape. They attacked the...
I grew up hearing the name, Cuddeback; that of an old Tehachapi pioneer family. As a child I knew only one person by that name. Recently, the local Museum assembled a historical display of the Cuddeback family. Information was put together by Laura Weltin who is a direct descendant of those early pioneers; more specifically, Grant Price Cuddeback. I now realize that many people I have known all of my life have a place on a branch of the Cuddeback Family Tree. They were there all along and I...
Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead With everybody tossing rotten tomatoes at the beleaguered Internal Revenue Service these days, I thought you might like to hear that the IRS did have a sense of humor at one time. I will violate one of my sacred principles just this once and tell you the absolute truth. Many years ago, I converted our garage into an office for my consulting business. Foolishly, I made it big enough that it encouraged my wife and daughters to cram it with their...
Ransomware sneaks onto your computer by either tricking you into opening an attachment or by subverting ads on websites you visit. Once on your computer, ransomware modifies your files by creating an encrypted copy of a file and then deleting the original file. It does this to all of your files, and holds them for ransom; you have to pay to get your pictures and documents back. A new player in the anti-ransomware space is RansomFree by Cybereason. RansomFree watches the file-related processes...

Many herbs grow naturally and go unnoticed in Tehachapi because they blend into the landscape and we have become accustomed to their subtle beauty. We are unacquainted with their history and myriad uses. I hope to correct that and encourage you to take a fresh look at several of these delightful and beneficial plants. "Use" is the key word when it comes to defining an herb. Webster states that an herb is a plant that is "valued for its medicinal properties, flavor or scent". Let us look at some...
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon a caravan of motorcycles and cars headed toward Bear Valley Springs. This was the beginning of a "Welcome Home" for US Army Specialist Brandon Matchett. The Patriot Guard Riders, pictured left, met Brandon and his family in downtown Tehachapi and escorted them to his parents' home in...

Kay Ford and her husband lived in California City for almost 50 years. They raised a family there. However, it was when she was finally there alone at the end of last year, that her grandson, Josh, and his wife, DeVerie, asked her if she would move to Tehachapi to be closer to them. She always found Tehachapi to be a very unique place so she said, “Find me a place and I’ll be there.” It took them a couple of months to find the right house and Kay made the move to Tehachapi in January, altho...
First of all, I can hardly deal with how precious Fred's face is in this picture; the sweetness is almost too much to bear. Even better is what the image represents, which is a relaxed, calm, and happy working dog, chilling out and listening to a young friend read him a story at Marley's Mutts and Beale Library's bi-monthly Barks & Books session. Why is this so significant? Well, some of you have followed Fred since he was a wee pup; and watched as he went away to serve a child with autism for...
There was a question asked of me, recently, during one of our First Friday evenings at the local Museum. The question: "When did Tehachapi first install electric lights?" The answer, of course, is 1915. I didn't elaborate as the conversation turned in another direction. The best part was not given and the person who inquired left with only the date and no more interesting facts. I was given that information from Grace Errea, herself, who had lived in the Errea House with her parents and...

I've been marching all my life, in one way or another; I've been to many types of rallies, protests and marches over the last 50 years, and while I am still active in many ways -- advocating for a more just and equitable world for everyone -- I kinda thought my actual "marching" days were over. Then came the recent Women's March on Washington on January 21 and I wanted to be there. Ultimately, I became part of the "Women's March – Los Angeles - Tehachapi Squad" (started on facebook by a c...
Even the fastest computer can slow down as time goes by. Here are a few things you can do to make it run like new again. Watch out for programs that auto-start Some programs want to start up every time you boot your computer and get loaded into RAM to be ready to go. Unless it's a program you run every time you use your computer; this slows down your computer's boot time. To see what starts up when your Windows computer boots up, right-click a blank spot on the taskbar and launch Task Manager...

Dr. Marian Stephens spoke to American Association of University Women at the February meeting about her experiences as a consultant to attorneys on cases concerning education. She said that attorneys certainly know the law, but they are not as familiar with the Education Code as she is. With 45 years of experience in the field of education, she is knowledgeable about school policy and administration of the Code. Stephens did not seek this work, but it developed when an attorney contacted her...
Serving as an auxiliary to the Navy during World War II, the Merchant Marines were the supply line that provided everything Allied armies needed in order to survive and fight on foreign battlefields. Working through Nazi U-boat infested waters, they pulled the most dangerous duty during that war. Casualty rates were dramatically higher than in any formal branch of the military, yet it wasn't until the Reagan era that veterans' status and benefits were awarded these brave men. Recently Tehachapi...
