For the fourth consecutive year, the Tehachapi Arts Commission will be holding its nationally recognized art show at the Aspen Builders Community Activity Center in July. It is difficult to predict a market crash. Currently, the demand for housing is low due to high interest rates. Supplies remain low, as well. Experts expect to see an increase in demand as summer arrives but we expect the lack of affordable housing to be a problem for years. According to a leading real estate data company ATTOM, their Housing Risk Report states that Kern County is one of the 50 most at-risk counties in the U.S. Based on home affordability and underwater mortgages (1.14% of...
At their May 6 meeting, the Tehachapi City Council approved a project proposed by the city to add a 15 foot x 20 foot expansion space behind the BeeKay Theatre. The new area will be exterior walls only with other improvements to be decided and financed by the Tehachapi Community Theater organization. It is hoped that this project will solve some of the space problems that have plagued the theater since its restoration in 2006. The city understands that TCT has been able to put money aside to...
On Feb. 19, the last movie played at the iconic Hitching Post Theaters. With the unexpected passing of owner Will Viner on Feb. 16, his family made the difficult decision to close the theater. The Tehachapi community was understandably distressed, as the theater has been a cornerstone of our town since 1994. There has been speculation by locals worried the theater would be changed into another business entirely, and hope that it would be purchased and refurbished. The community's prayers have...
May is the month we focus on flowers and mothers. Flowers can be tended in gardens or found growing free on hillsides and in unexpected places like cracks in the sidewalk. Though flowers look delicate blowing in the breeze, they are made of hearty stuff and endure with great strength whatever life throws at them. The same can be said for mothers. It would not be an exaggeration to say that mothers are the backbone of society, civilization and life as we know it. We owe our very existence to a...
I lost my mother over 20 years ago and I still miss her every day. I hold close so many wonderful memories of her, especially the ones where we laughed together. One time I shared an email funny with her titled, “Things my mother taught me.” Mom laughed as hard as I did because, after all, mothers are also daughters. And because we enjoyed this piece so much – and the underlying truths are timeless – I want to share this list once again with all of you in honor of the upcoming Mother...
Back in the mid 1990s, I was hired on as an part-time airport attendant at the Tehachapi Municipal Airport. I also did general grounds maintenance, "FOD" control (keeping the runways/taxiways clean). I also got to help pilots fuel up their aircraft. I really enjoyed helping the pilots safely fuel and chat with them. For me it was a dream job because I got to be around some fantastic aircraft, some world class pilots and I got to learn a lot about aviation at the same time. Being a long time...
There are many things that can threaten the life of your trees and plants. But with our help, we can keep them growing strong. I have had some customers tell me that removing mistletoe is illegal. Thankfully, an online search has proven that to not be true. Proper removal is important for your plant's health. What about fruit tree pests? Borers on cherries, aphids on peach, nectarine and apricot wooly aphids on apples and pears and frost damage. This year, that's what happened to a lot of the fr...

Credit Unions (CUs) are important for businesses because they generally offer access to lower rates on financing when it comes to major purchases, such as buying equipment or expanding operations. CUs also often have better terms than traditional banks and other financial institutions, allowing businesses to save money in the long run. Additionally, many CUs offer specialized services, such as business financial education. Financial education programs are designed to help business owners...

At the May meeting of the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council, Waste Management made a presentation about the new mandates of the great State of California regarding different colored collection containers for organic waste and recyclables. Local government will have the additional expense of enforcement, but taxpayers will ultimately bear the additional costs. Sculpt365 has a way to offset these additional expenses and make you healthier as well: Quit drinking sugary drinks and...
It is amazing that we are once again heading into the tail end of the athletics season at Tehachapi High School. So much was accomplished and as usual, there is so much left to do. What a great historic season for the Warriors and Lady Warriors across a variety of sports. There of course was football, who posted a perfect 10-0 record during the regular season, only to fall victim to below-board CIF Central Section playoff seeding policies that bumped the Warriors up a division to the Division...
In a previous article, I wrote about the ever prevalent and shady practice know as phishing. Again, phishing is when a fake article, message, email or even a phone call hits one of your electronic devices stating that your computer is infected, or that something has been charged to you, or a myriad of other things that relate to your money and finances. Let’s face it, when we hear that there is something going on with our finances, that we have not authorized, we panic. And that is probably t...
Barb Pfeiffer and John Campbell moved to their new Tehachapi home in January from Monrovia in Los Angeles County where they had lived for a less than a year. Their new Tehachapi ranch has supplied them with space for everyone. Both divorced, the couple met by chance at th...

"The kitchen needs to be updated." "We need to build an additional room." "My roof needs to be replaced." "I have too much credit card debt." These are just a few of the comments I hear when a client wants more information on how they can access the equity in their home to make updates or pay off existing debt. Here are just a few of the options that Nations Lending currently can offer to help a client achieve their goal: One option is to consider a cash-out refinance. While there are differing...

I had several expensive trees taken, early morning on May 5 (possibly late evening on May 4). The big trees were Vanderwolf Pine, Oriental Spruce and Bakeri Spruce, all in 20 gallon pots. They didn’t take the pots, just the trees. If anyone in your neighborhood has just planted trees, or is in the process of landscaping, please check it out. Contact Tehachapi Police Department, (661) 822-2222 with any information. They have a record of the theft. Please help!...
Tehachapi Adult Day Health Care recently held a pool tournament. Three winners were named, which led to one champion. The air was filled with competitiveness and excitement. Specific rules were set up by a member of the center, and a playing grid kept track of those who won and lost each game. Those who lost were placed on a new player's grid to compete for a second chance to become the champion. The outcome of the tournament was champion Scott Peck. He modestly spoke about the event, "I did not...
