Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission Not long ago I got to thinking about a patent medicine called Hadacol that I'm told has been off the market for a long time. I mentioned it to a friend and she said that when she was a young woman her middle-aged parents started taking Hadacol and soon presented her with a baby sister. Why would they quit selling something that magical? As I remember, Hadacol was an invention of a master showman who called himself Judge...
Juni Fisher is no stranger to these parts. She has already given four sold-out concerts in Fiddlers Crossing and will ride into town March 3 for her fifth appearance. Fisher is the real deal – a Western singer who actually IS a cowgirl. Many of her songs are about women rodeo riders of bygone days, and she can be funny and poignant at the same time. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez a...
Tehachapi area photographers were challenged by Tehachapi Valley Arts Association to a photo contest this month and once again far exceeded expectations. The biannual contest (also held in August) began on a whim 12 years ago and has become a popular and highly anticipated event in the community since then. "As soon as one contest is over, the photographers are contacting Gallery 'N" Gifts to find out the specifics for the next contest. I love that we can give them this opportunity to be...
At full build-out, the California High-Speed Rail (HSR) will have stations in eight of the 10 largest cities in the state, including Bakersfield and Palmdale. While Tehachapi does not meet the criteria for "big," the proposed track alignment through the Tehachapi Valley leaves open the possibility that one day a station could be built to serve the Tehachapi community. "We plan for the future. We made sure the alignment is long and straight," Project Manager Juan Carlos Velasquez told a crowd of...
The new Tehachapi hospital at 1100 Magellan Drive appears ready to open its doors and save lives... but there's more to be done before the official opening in the third quarter of 2017. Some remodeling of the hospital pharmacy is taking place to meet new California hospital building codes, and the complex process of licensing will take months....

Tehachapi Treasure Trove will be celebrating First Friday from 5-8 p.m. with an ode to Women's History Month. We'll honor women from the past as well as women in the present (who are making history right now) with photos and stories, plus of course our usual food, wine, good conversation and laughter, and music by Art Larsen on clarinet. History is written by the victors and, therefore, the entire story is never told. This is certainly true of women's contributions. History has largely ignored t...
Beware scams – Evil people use “social engineering” to scam you. At the Feb. 1 meeting of the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council, Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce President Ida Perkins distributed a reprint from the Security Awareness Newsletter by James Lyne that explains how scammers fool people. “Cyber attackers have learned that often the easiest way to steal your information, hack your accounts or infect your systems is by simply tricking you into making a mistake...
With a vote of 3-2, the City Council defeated a proposal by newly elected City Councilman Kenneth Hetge requesting that the City draft an ordinance limiting the number of years a citizen can serve on the City Council. His proposal included a lifetime limit of three terms or 12 years of total service, stating that this would mirror the 2012 California state proposition supporting term limits. Mayor Grimes added that the 2012 proposition exempted any official sitting at the time of the vote....

Tehachapi lost one of its brightest stars last month. Martin Jay Sussell, whom everyone called Jay, passed away on Jan. 9 after a long illness. Having spent most of his working life in law enforcement (Los Angeles, Gardina, Beverly Hills) and the space tech industry, where he met wife Flo, he kept that energy up when the couple moved to Tehachapi to retire. With friend Geoffrey Braslow he founded VIPS (volunteers in police service) and he remained active in both Tehachapi and Bear Valley...

After 25 years of being one of Kern County's best known tourist destinations, Indian Point Ostrich Ranch will be permanently closing its doors at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. When owners Joel and Marcy Brust decided last year that they needed to retire, they began a search for someone to take over the tourist venue either at their ranch or moving it to a new location. A year of repeated attempts to find a buyer for the gift shop and tour operations were unsuccessful so, sadly, the day has finally...

I have noticed confusion in the people I talk to regarding tax credits and tax deductions. A tax deduction reduces the amount of income that is subject to tax. The itemized deductions for mortgage interest, real estate taxes, contributions, etc are examples. If you earn $60,000 but have $15,000 in itemized deductions, you pay tax on $45,000 of income. If you are in a 15% federal tax bracket, a $15,000 tax deduction reduces your tax $2,250 ($15,000 x 15% tax rate). A tax credit reduces your tax b...
Dale Hawkins, retired from a career in engineering, is now a Solar System Ambassador for NASA/JPL. In this capacity, he spoke to Kiwanis recently about the Voyager Program. He explained there are two Voyager spacecrafts which were launched only months apart in 1977 with the primary mission being the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. This mission yielded much information for the scientific community. Built to last five years, they were sent on a two-year mission and have lasted well beyond....
When I was a child, I learned in Sunday School that “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world – red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight…” I took that to heart and used it to form one of the basic foundations of my general understanding of life on this good Earth. When I was in kindergarten and first grade, I was in a one-room country school near Grand Island, Nebraska, where I picked up a love of learning (and the power of observation) by listeni...

JC & Laney are high-energy entertainers, with improvised banter, signature harmonies and memorable songs that run the gamut between folk, blues, pop, rock and comedy.
