Dale Hawkins, retired from a career in engineering, is now a Solar System Ambassador for NASA/JPL. In this capacity, he spoke to Kiwanis recently about the Voyager Program. He explained there are two Voyager spacecrafts which were launched only months apart in 1977 with the primary mission being the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. This mission yielded much information for the scientific community. Built to last five years, they were sent on a two-year mission and have lasted well beyond....
When I was a child, I learned in Sunday School that “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world – red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight…” I took that to heart and used it to form one of the basic foundations of my general understanding of life on this good Earth. When I was in kindergarten and first grade, I was in a one-room country school near Grand Island, Nebraska, where I picked up a love of learning (and the power of observation) by listeni...

JC & Laney are high-energy entertainers, with improvised banter, signature harmonies and memorable songs that run the gamut between folk, blues, pop, rock and comedy. I’ve used the analogy before about our water supply being like a bank account. Much of the savings account, the already overused water stored underground, has been exasperated by five years of drought. It will take some time to recover that savings. A value of the drought was to open our eyes to the precariousness of the California water supply in the face of ever increasing population. This has spurred all kinds of interest groups at high levels to move toward more sustainable solutions. Here in the Tehachapi Valley, 50 percent of our water s...
“ The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities. They evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into an influential non-profit organization in the United States.” I copied that from the Internet. But, what does it really mean? I grew up knowing that my father, a World War I veteran, was a member of the American Legion. He had served and was proud of his country and wou...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt When he made that famous statement more then 50 years ago, the newly-elected President was trying to boost spirits crushed by the Great Depression. Yet his simple words have timeless meaning. Fear is a tenacious parasite of humanity, breeding more evil than hatred, jealousy or any other emotion. The fear Roosevelt spoke of in 1933 was based on...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission One of the things I like best about my home town of Tehachapi is its one-of-a-kind name. I haven’t heard of another Tehachapi anywhere in our galaxy. I also take perverted pleasure in the fact that Tehacgapi doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue. I always look forward to calling in a catalog order and hearing the sharp intake of breath as our town’s noble name pops up on the monitor. One time the order clerk went entir...
Google makes things convenient, and that convenience comes, in part, because of what Google ‘knows’ about you and your habits. Everything you search for at home or on your phone, where you go with your phone, and if you’ve ever use OK Google, it keeps that too. To be fair, Google does give us a way to see what they’re capturing about us and even ways to delete a lot of it. If you’ve ever used the ‘OK, Google’ feature on your phone or laptop, Google keeps a recording and a transcript of...

This time I am straying from my mother Marion Deaver's history articles to explain something I have decided to do. Over the New Year weekend I was bored, so I decided I was going to read the entire Sunday newspaper from cover to cover. In that process I began to read Parade Magazine, a Sunday supplement. During that read, I found an article entitled "Resolution: Kindness – Let's Make 2017 the Year of Being Kind." The article featured a photo of Lady Gaga with her quote to encourage kindness: "...

Of course, it includes our hotels, restaurants and tourist venues. However, it also includes the events and celebrations that are the reason many people come to Tehachapi. Many Tehachapi...

"I am very proud how Michael has progressed this year" said Coach Curtis Nelson. Other TVWC wrestlers traveled to...
On Jan. 17, three American Legion Auxiliary Tehachapi Unit 221 members delivered the first batch of sleeping mats to Pastor Marvin Slifer and Robert Winger of Mt. Bible Church.
