Stray Leaves Vineyard calls its best wines "Kate's Reserve." These wines are typically strong, "Wild," and one-of-a-kind red blends. We often get asked who Kate is and why she has a reserve. Kate's Reserve is a story of a man and a stray dog. Kate was a black lab mix that decided Stray Leaves Vineyard would be her home. Clifford Merdith, vineyard owner, remembers his dog fondly. From 2005 to 2014, Kate protected the vineyard as it grew from baby plants to beautiful vines. For six months in...

Taking responsibility for your health is the first step, and nutrition is the most important factor of healthy living. However, the benefits of good nutrition do not happen overnight. Months, maybe even years, are needed to take control of your life by healthy eating. The first step is to dramatically reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. People today...

Like many of you, I was terribly sad to find out that the Hitching Post Theater in our fair little town has closed its doors for good. I'm very sad for the reason it closed – the death of the owner – and I offer my condolences to his family and friends and employees. I only met Will Viner one time years ago, when my Art Center was having an art show opening with an Ode to Hollywood theme. I went into the HP to buy some movie popcorn for our grand red-carpet event, and he just donated two lar...

Lyndee Richmond sat with her 92-year-old father, Ken Hensler, watching enormous machines moving earth and placing cinder blocks at the construction site on Tehachapi Blvd. Neither one of them could believe that they were watching – after years of anticipation, dreaming and planning, their storage unit project was finally taking shape. It wouldn't be long before customers were filling the new, state-of-the-art units at Mountain Top Storage with valuables. In 2003, Lyndee and her husband, Scott R...
Elizabeth Mahurin moved to Tehachapi from California City at the end of December 2023. For the last nine years she had been living in California City while working as a substitute teacher, among numerous other jobs there. She retired on Dec. 22. Elizabeth had heard that Tehachapi was safe, beautiful and a nice place to live so she decided to check it out for herself. Accompanying Elizabeth to her new home is her service dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Patches and two cats – Fernando, a 2...
A huge thank you goes out from Blooms to all of you who showed up and supported us over this Valentine's holiday! It's an insane time in a florist's life, and we just could not have done it without all of you. We are grateful, with a heart full of appreciation. Up next ... springtime! Easter! I know you've all been seeing the green hills and the buds beginning to pop out in the beautiful nature around us. It makes me think of spring blooms. In the floral studio, we'll be adding some specialties...
On a misty Tehachapi night, following rain earlier in the day, a small creature emerges from a hiding spot beneath a large toppled bark section, which is lying half-buried in leaf litter beside a fallen tree trunk. The little amphibian surveys its damp surroundings, as water droplets cling to the green grass. A Tehachapi Mountains native, it has large dark eyes, a mouth that seems slightly upturned in a pleasant grin, and appears to be wearing a tiny full body wetsuit decorated with splotches...
Rosemary is an attractive, hardy little shrub that many people associate with the Simon and Garfunkel hit song Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. This plant thrives in the Tehachapi Mountains and is a great choice to have somewhere in your garden for a number of reasons: it is evergreen, cold hardy, drought-tolerant and useful as a fragrant herb. The name "Rosemary" itself is rich with different significant meanings. The word originally comes from "ros" which is the Latin word for "dew," and...

Giving back, it’s almost become a generic term, and it’s meaning is probably different for each one of us. For me it meant taking the opportunities I had, finding areas that were important to me and trying to make a difference in my communities. First, you must find your passions. If you’re going to make a difference you need to know what drives you, and where you can make a difference in something that is important to you. For me it was always veterans and kids. I knew for me to give back,...
I’m Stanley Morgan. My wife, Linda, and I lost our daughter on Feb. 5, due to complications from a brain bleed. Over the last 8 years she had significant health issues and had been on hospice for 2 years. That having been said, nothing really prepares one for the loss of a child, regardless of what age they may be. Upon her passing we told a few people who we felt had a need/desire to know about her death and word quickly spread. I am writing this to express our heartfelt thank you to the Tehachapi community for the incredible support and c...
In 1933, during one of the worst periods of the great depression, my parents found themselves lacking money to continue paying rent on a small house on K Street in Mojave. In the attitude of “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade,” they decided to build a house. It was easier in those days before building permits, regulations and inspections were required. My father, Chauncey Davis, traded local businessman Cy Townsend a piece of mining property for a vacant lot in town – just across the s...

Additionally, they provide youth athletic programs and family events for the Tehachapi community. Corey Torres, manager of TVRPD, was disappointed by the...

Vietnam veteran Steve Miles and American Legion Post 221 Commander Lynn Eckert attended the Feb. 20 City Council meeting with a request that the City of Tehachapi approve one $1,500 sponsorship for a veteran to make an Honor Flight trip. Miles and Eckert related stories of their time in Vietnam and a reception on their return where they were afraid to let people know they had served. By the end of their presentation, the pair, as well as the council members and the audience, were in tears. City...
What do dogs, bears and meerkats have in common? Well, usually not that much, but in this review they all are surrounded by mystery and murder. Three authors have woven stories around these animals, and it may be hard to recognize the leading characters, because as you know, children and animals tend to steal the show. I enjoyed sharing a dog's point of view along with runaway Chase Ryder and grieving veterinarian Sully, in "Wanted." In this first book by K.J. Corgan of the Chase Ryder series,...
