For home fruit growers, it is time to apply annual dormant oil application on selected fruit trees. This is probably one of the most important sprays for fruit trees and least toxic of all spray materials for the homeowner to handle. Dormant oil is a refined petroleum product formulated for orchard tree use. It has been in use for well over a century in commercial orchards and is still regularly used today. It is classified as an insecticide, and acts by coating overwintering insects hiding in...

Benjamin Franklin once said that nothing can be certain, except death and taxes. Well, I am not a funeral director, but I am a mortgage lender and know how you can utilize your tax refund in a home purchase. Saving for a down payment can be a challenging task, with many unexpected expenses occurring along the way. Utilizing your tax return, however, can make that effort much less daunting. You may be able to fund most if not all your down payment depending on the total purchase price of a home...
Greg Cunningham is an amazing person, tech and friend. I have spoken with many of his customers, and each have nothing but praises for Greg. He will be missed for his knowledge, kindness, humor and friendship. One day, Greg came to my shop and told me that he was retiring. He asked if he could put my phone number and name on his phone message that would indicate that he was retiring. I told him that it would be okay, and that I would do my best to take care of his customers. I told him that I...

Ferer said that since 2006, there have been 98 babies surrendered at local Kern County Fire stations. This is a reminder that any unwanted newborn can be surrendered at any Kern County Fire...
Linda McDermott will be featured as the Author of the Month at Tehachapi Museum on Saturday, March 2. She will be there to answer questions and talk about the books she has written. It is an informal session, so drop in any time between noon and 4 p.m. to visit with her. It’s also a good opportunity to spend some time seeing the museum. After McDermont’s children were “out of the nest,” and she retired from a career in human resources, she began travelling. She went to Alaska for two months with her dog and cat, and she adds, “I returned...
The City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 5 to direct the city to publish a Notice of Intent to fill by appointment the District 5 City Council vacancy created by the resignation by Councilwoman Susan Wiggins, who is moving out of state. A second option for filling the vacancy would be to hold a special election that would cost the city more than $20,000. In either case the vacancy would be filled only until the next election in November 2024. The cost of the ad is estimated to be about $250....
We've begun a new year and 2024 is an opportunity to improve the quality of your life by taking responsibility for your own well being. Taking responsibility for your health is the first step, and nutrition is the most important factor of healthy living. However, the benefits of good nutrition do not happen overnight. Months, maybe even years, are needed to take control of your life by healthy eating. The first step is to dramatically reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. People today...
The puns just keep on a-comin' and a-comin', and I gotta admit, I'm glad they do. There's nothing like a good play on words to brighten up dreary rainy days like the ones we've been having lately, especially the ones that provide a good chuckle (or even a good groan). And based on the feedback I get from readers – not to mention the numerous puns I receive from friends and strangers alike – many of you like them as much as I do. So here, then, are some more funny punny offerings from my acq...

After all the reds and pinks of Valentine's Day, I think of February as being a lavender month. Perhaps that is because February's birthstone is amethyst, with its deep purple brilliance and luster. Or perhaps I am ready for spring flowers with the happy faces of pansies, an early contender in the garden. Whatever the reason, I chose the following books to review because of their covers. This is not my usual process. "Tea is for Trouble," by Karen Sue Walker, presents cover art of a pretty...
Here are two weather photos from the last few weeks that I shot. Years ago when I first moved to the mountains, the local folks told me, "if you don't like the weather just wait 15 minutes." Well, they were right. The weather up here has always been very interesting and changeable. We have had fast moving storm systems for the last week or so. They produce great sunrises, rainbows, lenticular clouds and many weather wind events. I originally made the trek up to the mountains over 40 years ago...

The 2024 Winter Photo Contest held by Tehachapi Valley Arts Association and Gallery 'N' Gifts had its opening with a well-attended First Friday event on Feb. 2. Fewer entries came in this year due to the bad timing of winter storms, but those who braved the elements to enter came prepared to make things tough on the judges. "Gallery 'N' Gifts has hosted Photo Contests every February and August since 2005," said President, Gale Caldwell. "I have never been as moved by a photo as this year's Best...
A life-giving spring produces clean, clear water every day, filling a couple of small ponds that reflect the trees that tower above them, and the blue Southern California sky above. This natural gift of abundance was cherished by Native people for many centuries, and then sorely neglected by the newcomers who arrived and pushed them aside. Not any more. Thanks to an effort led by Tongva tribal members, this bountiful source of fresh water is once more a place of beauty. It is a natural resource...
This loveable plant, like so many others, is known by several different names, including Apricot Mallow, Desert Mallow, Desert Globemallow and others. By whatever name is used, however, it is a great addition to your garden. It is native to the Mojave Desert and there are lots of them growing alongside Highway 14 as you head towards Red Rock Canyon State Park, so clearly they are drought-tolerant, but unlike many xeriscape plants, Apricot Mallow is also fast-growing. They grow into blooming...
Are you trying to decide between snow chains versus cables? Those who live in areas with severe winter weather often face this decision. While using snow tires does the job for most winter conditions, in some places it's a good idea to take it a step further to ensure that your tires maintain traction in slippery conditions. Snow chains or snow cables are even required on certain roads, especially in mountainous areas where snow piles up quickly. Here's how to decide whether to use snow chains...
Elsewhere in this edition of The Loop, you will see the obituary of my father, Michael Costelloe who passed away on Feb. 5 after some prolonged health battles. Never one to shy away from a challenge or a difficult task, he gave everything he had in that battle before the grace of God took him home. It's true what they say, as you get older you tend to notice you take more and more after your parents. In retrospect of my life I can certainly attest to that fact, I am a lot like my father Mike....

For the last several years, Carmen had been living in Palmdale, where her son Scott was living. Other than her two sons in California, she has a son, a daughter a...
In 1972, before you needed to be a computer technician to work on a car, I went to Insurance School on S. Figueroa in Downtown Los Angeles. I remember the instructor telling us around the corner was the Coliseum and if you filled it up with 100,000 people, you could pretty much determine the range of time when everyone in the stadium would die. Wars, famine, depressions did not affect the "law of large numbers" which is what insurance is based upon. Insurance companies determine the percentage...
Sometimes when reliving memories of years past I think of something that is just too good to keep to myself. My husband and his friend, Sergeant Major Frederick W. Filkins, were what you would call "brothers in the Corps." Both served in World War II, both with the China Marines, veterans of Korea and Vietnam. They often found themselves in the same duty station during the 30 years they spent in the Corps. One day, many years back, when Fred was telling one of his experiences, I turned on a...
