Benjamin Franklin once said that nothing can be certain, except death and taxes. Well, I am not a funeral director, but I am a mortgage lender and know how you can utilize your tax refund in a home purchase. Saving for a down payment can be a challenging task, with many unexpected expenses occurring along the way. Utilizing your tax return, however, can make that effort much less daunting. You may be able to fund most if not all your down payment depending on the total purchase price of a home...
Are you trying to decide between snow chains versus cables? Those who live in areas with severe winter weather often face this decision. While using snow tires does the job for most winter conditions, in some places it's a good idea to take it a step further to ensure that your tires maintain traction in slippery conditions. Snow chains or snow cables are even required on certain roads, especially in mountainous areas where snow piles up quickly. Here's how to decide whether to use snow chains...

A new art show has recently opened at Lancaster's Museum of Art and History (MOAH), and it's a good one. I really enjoyed viewing the various artforms when I went down there a couple of weeks ago. Called "Formation" the show features a number of ceramic sculptures and wall displays and offers some very unique pieces. The show runs through April 14, so you have plenty of time to see it if you're so inclined. Nine different artists are featured, including Kiel Johnson, Kevin Kowalski, Galia Linn,...
Each week we hear the same question: What is a chamber of commerce and what does it do? Well, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to share a little insight as to what a chamber of commerce is and why successful communities have them. The concept of various businesses joining together in a mutual effort to increase commerce has its beginnings in Europe. Primarily as a defensive tactic, traders banded together for protection against common enemies and to establish policies to govern trade....

There are more than 100 million cars operating in the United States, not including heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles and buses. Despite the growing popularity of electric vehicles (more than a million on the road today), the majority of these commuter sedans and family SUVs rely on combustion engines, which expel dangerous exhaust fumes. Even the most basic exhaust system is designed to route gases away from the passenger cabin. Advancements throughout the past 50 years have concentrated on convert...

The fencing will be post and rail and placed one foot north of the concrete path. Openings will be supplied allowing for maintenance vehicles to...
Winter has definitely arrived in our Tehachapi Mountains, and in the surrounding valleys. Some people like to use winter as an excuse to stay in and stay warm, others like to get out and be active in the cooler weather. For those in the latter group, today I'm suggesting a few good places to take a nice easy walk this winter – great places to get out and enjoy nature that won't leave you huffing and puffing, and that are easy to get to. One of my favorite places is the Arthur B. Ripley Desert W...

While most traditional winter driving techniques are still helpful today, modern vehicle design has introduced a number of wrinkles into how to safely get from point A to point B with snow and ice on the ground. New safety systems and driver's aids have transformed how cars and trucks handle the winter, however, giving you fresh options for dealing with bad-weather driving. Here's a look at how winter driving techniques have been affected by the latest automotive technology. Stability control...

TVAA was formed soon after World War II. In 1945, Tehachapi's soldiers were returning home. Many had developed new skills and talents while serving their country. The women who had waited at home had also developed skills and artistic talents – after all, this was a time of new beginnings, creativity and make do with what you have. It was a time of hope and wanting to bring color and beauty to their surroundings. A casual group of artists and crafters was formed – the Tehachapi Valley Arts Ass...

In this issue we will continue the discussion begun in The Loop newspaper's Oct. 28 issue describing 7 end-of-summer car care tips.
