"The City of Tehachapi is honored to receive an award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the Tehachapi Boulevard Bike Path Project. • Hi-Speed Rail: Slow process for fast train

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Sep 15, 2018

Public hearings for draft environmental report due summer 2019 Piece by piece, elements of the massive California High-Speed Rail (HSR) project are falling into place as planners move ahead like the tenacious tortoise who prevailed over the overconfident and dismissive hare. In this case, the hare is the portion of the population of California whose favorite word for the project is "boondoggle." The tortoise keeps moving steadily ahead. "There are 120 miles [of track] under construction and 21...

  • Making community a priority

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

There are so many things in Tehachapi that remind me of my dad. The wildflowers, the people, the open and endless sky at dusk. But nothing quite brings him back to me like the gentle hum of a mountain dulcimer. I woke up to a lovely surprise a couple of weeks ago. Fiddlers Crossing, Tehachapi's local gathering place for beautiful concerts and art, posted on Facebook a preview of their upcoming mountain dulcimer concert with Steve Eulberg and Erin Mae Lewis. I already planned on attending the con...

  • Chalk on the Walk lines the streets in vibrant colors

    Julianna Crisalli|Aug 18, 2018

Artists of all ages began claiming their 4 by 4-foot section of sidewalk canvas along Tehachapi Boulevard and Green Street at 7:30 a.m. It didn't take long for beautiful art to appear. While some of the artists were new to Chalk on the Walk, others like Best in Show winner Bridget Lucas have participated for "more years than I can remember." Lucas graduated from high school this year and is...

  • If you've never lived in a Quonset hut

    Pat Gracey|Jul 21, 2018

My first experience living in a Quonset hut was, as a bride, in 1950. The tunnel-like buildings were one of hundreds-of-thousands that had been constructed to house military personnel and families on bases during World War II. Our group of huts, called Homaja Housing, was just inside the main gate of Camp Pendleton. The one-thousand or so huts were located on the west side of Vandergrift Boulevard as it proceeded into Camp Pendleton, a giant Base encompassing over 126,000-acres that swept from...

  • Got a business, service club, or event? Want it noticed?

    William Kritlow|May 12, 2018

If you have a business, service club, or perhaps an event you want to get noticed, it's important to pursue as many avenues as you can to get the attention you need. You'll definitely want to use print media, of course. An ad in The Loop always works. But nowadays there's a whole new boulevard to walk down-social media, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, to mention just a few. While that ad in The Loop will stay in front of people for at least a couple of weeks, social media might only...

  • The Esplanade

    Pat Gracey|Mar 31, 2018

A decade or more back, when I first saw the construction/renovation of Green St., with colorful road tiles on the intersections, newly designed street signs, and an added "first for Tehachapi," a one way street, I thought, "What next?" Why does Tehachapi think they need a one way street? A few years back I used to drive a senior citizen to the Post Office each day at ten o'clock in the morning. Actually, we were both senior citizens but he was just more senior than I by some fifteen years. I...

  • Air mail, special delivery

    Pat Gracey|Feb 17, 2018

It was a sunny day on May 19, 1938 when my eldest brother, Everett Davis, drove my sister, Evelyn, my brother Buster and myself to the local airport in my father's 1928 Hupmobile. I had asked to go as they got into the car and they grudgingly assented. Ten year old sisters can be a trial to older siblings and I was perfectly cast for the part. The occasion was a commemoration marking the 20th Anniversary of National Airmail Service with a flight from Tehachapi to Bakersfield. Local pilot, Harry...

  • Weather? What kind?

    Pat Gracey|Jan 6, 2018

I often hear people say, "It's never been this hot before!" Later, "It's never been this cold before!" Don't forget to mention, "We've never had such a dry year before!" or "We've never had this much rain before." Actually, the only answer to that is, "Yes, we have." This past year, however, has been a real pain to those who mourn the lack of moisture of any kind. A couple of rains and a spitting of snow and we're back to "sunny days ahead" Sunny California is certainly earning its name. January...

  • Chemtool: It's all about grease

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Oct 14, 2017

The big, stand-alone industrial building just north of Tehachapi Boulevard east of Dennison is the Chemtool manufacturing plant. While the absence of signage at the site and strangely shaped tankers rolling in and out render the plant anonymous and rather mysterious, the company is the west coast anchor of the fifth largest grease maker in the world. The Tehachapi Chemtool plant produces custom grease products, blending oil with specialty chemicals that can make the grease last longer, perform...

  • Old Timers 'Unite!'

    Pat Gracey|Aug 19, 2017

Quite often I encounter someone who greets me with, "Hello there, young lady!" They're just being kind for, unless their eyesight is nearly gone, they can see the wrinkles that disqualify me as a young lady. Never once, though, does anyone address the attendees at the local Old Timer's Picnic, as young. We all know that to qualify one has to have been around the block a couple of times. I enjoy being on the committee for the local Old Timer's Picnic. When sitting behind a table greeting folk,...
