Guild to the rescue – From the operation of its little thrift shop at 101 West E Street, the Tehachapi Hospital Guild through the years has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in hard cash to purchase vital hi-tech equipment for the Tehachapi Hospital. Now the Guild has in excess of $675,000 in its bank account, and Adventist Health (soon to be the operator of the new hospital and clinics), with its big purchasing power and resources, doesn't really need those funds for equipment. As the R...

The parade used to go down Main Street, now called Tehachapi Boulevard. I was just a kid at the time so as far as where the traffic was rerouted, I have no idea. Maybe they all stopped and watched the parade; who knows? US. Highway 466 came through town and then took a left on Curry to end up taking the old highway down the mountains to Bakersfield. The only route at the time. One other detail must be added; it was then a 4th of July parade. In later years the Chamber of Commerce, the City...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission from Tehachapi News, November 4, 2007 issue. I have taken it upon myself to appoint Dan Ingram the Clown Prince of Tehachapi. I mean that as a compliment. Several times a week Betty and I receive humorous and heart-warming messages from Dan that never fail to brighten our days. Last week he recalled the epic Battle of Palmdale which most people are too young to remember and which I had nearly forgotten. This episode bega...

People got answers to their questions from a dozen project engineers and managers who fielded questions one-on-one in a relaxed...

As a municipal service engineer for over 15 years, I cannot count the times I have been asked about a decision I have made regarding a public facility. Most of the time it is a genuine desire to understand why we chose to pursue a certain project. On a few occasions, it's a veiled criticism of what was, to the asker, an obviously wrong choice. The practice of civil engineering and municipal project design does not always follow a path of obvious short-term needs. Instead, in many cases it is an...

At first glance, it could be a palace in the mist, arising mysteriously from the pages of history. At night, hundreds of lights create an image of a sparkling Manhattan Island or of a cruise ship beckoning across the water. The landmark Lehigh Southwest Cement plant has been producing construction materials for homes, roads and infrastructure in California since 1908.
