We’ve been hearing a lot about the BeeKay Theatre lately so I decided to add a few of my own facts. Mine are just tales that if not told would someday be forgotten. Can’t let that happen. The BeeKay Theater was built and opened in 1936; reinforced concrete and strong enough to resist an earthquake! People from Mojave, Keene and Caliente often drove to Tehachapi to view the movies. That year, 1936, was also the year that Green Street was paved for the first time. The rather unique name, “BeeKay...
The Thunder on the Mountain Car Show donates a portion of the money from the fundraising event to our local Salvation Army because it is there to help the needy people of Tehachapi. There are people in our community who need help. Low income families, some children and seniors need a hand once in awhile. Our local Salvation Army helps people in need with some basic necessities. They provide food to an average of 1700 individuals, help over 350 families with emergency utility assistance, and help about 500 children with back to school needs...
We've all heard that it's better to give than to receive. There is joy in giving. Some children never get to experience this. Thunder on the Mountain supports a program that gives children a chance to feel the joy of giving. The Shop With a Cop program is an annual event that joins underprivileged children with local law enforcement officers, providing the children with money to shop for Christmas presents. Officers from Tehachapi Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Kern County...

Howdy, folks! It's that time of year again! When the Tehachapi Community Theater (TCT) presents its 7th "Playwrights' Festival" held at Tehachapi's beautiful BeeKay Theater. Our local senior center operates on money from fundraisers and donations, and over the last seven years the Thunder on the Mountain Car Show has donated over $25,000 to the Tehachapi Senior Center. The Senior Center, located at 500 East F Street, is not a place where old people sit and stare at each other to see who will fall asleep first. Our seniors are active! They celebrate life and they celebrate each other. The center is a place where you can improve your mental and physical fitness, have...

It was a work transfer with a utility company that brought Dean Long to Tehachapi. He came from Rancho Cucamonga where he had lived since he was five years old. He found a beautiful mountain top home with spectacular views in Bear Valley Springs. His parents came to visit shortly after he moved into his new house and they brought some pictures that his father had taken of this area while working with a utility company back in the 1970s. One picture really looked familiar to Dean. On closer...

Kiwanis members were treated to a preview of the upcoming musical, Riverwind, when Director Karl Schuck introduced the cast and explained his reasons for selecting this play. He had seen Riverwind in 1965 and dreamed of one day being its director. When there was an opening for Tehachapi Community Theater to stage a musical, Schuck volunteered to direct the play that had captivated him many years ago. He described the play as sweet and charming, the perfect show for Tehachapi. The story takes...

Ryan Ashley Rosenthal arrived in Tehachapi over the summer when her family moved to Bear Valley from Santa Clarita. They felt it was time to get away from the city. Ryan was born in Mission Hills, California but said that she lived in Missouri, Mississippi, Texas and Nevada during her first four years of life. This was due to her father’s work in food distribution. She said that she enjoys all outdoor activities; however, it is singing that is a real passion for Ryan. In high school she was invo...

David and Carol Faber moved to Tehachapi this spring from Paso Robles where they had lived for 20 years. They told me that it had just become too crowded. When it came time to retire, they decided that it was time to make a move. Four of their grandchildren were in Bakersfield so they thought Tehachapi would be a great choice. They brought Carol’s mother and sister with them as well as Molly, their twelve year old Basset/Lhasa Apso mix. Both David and Carol had worked for the Department of C...
Before this goes to press the Heritage League will have already sponsored what they called "a Summer Stroll", which in actuality, will have consisted of a group of people "strolling" from one location to another with a Heritage League member stopping and giving a bit of history of a few local sites. The Stroll will have started at the Depot where a short orientation took place before the leisurely walk began. I would not be on the walk itself but stationed at a prescribed location, however, I...

The next event was a Spring Fashion Show held at the BeeKay Theater. This event not only promotes local shopping by showing just how wonderful the clothes are at Dah...
My parents moved to Tehachapi in 1923. Then, in 1926 they moved to Mojave as my father secured employment as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Consequently, I was born in the Mojave Desert where rain doesn’t visit often. In fact, when it rained while we were at school they let us go home! It was called a Rainy Day Session. I only remember that happening twice but it was a happy time for the children. It’s strange though that sometimes a desert rain can turn into a flash flood and...

Tehachapi Community Theatre offers heart, humor and sentiment in their new true-to-life comedy. It's Gabe and Olivia's move-in day. Olivia Keegan (Emily Stults) is an energetic, neat – verging on OCD – architect, and Gabe Lawson (Kendric Bertram) is a kind, good-natured writer. They've just packed up all of their belongings and driven halfway across the country, to start a new life together, in Chicago. Their moving day doesn't go exactly as planned and things become slightly more com...
