How heartwarming and sweet that the passing of a simple man who led an uncomplicated life has touched the hearts and lives of our community in such a profound way. In the words of his son, Michael, and as cited in his obituary, Delbert Hill was a "work, home and church guy." Best known in his most recent employment at Walgreens ("the face of Walgreens Tehachapi"), Delbert was always upbeat and positive and had a unique knack for making people feel special, calling his customers by name and...

Dena still works as a social worker in Palmdale for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, where she works with the homeless. Derek was born in Los Angeles as was his father. He is an...
Have you had the opportunity to see some of the recent productions over the last couple of years at the beautiful BeeKay Theatre in downtown Tehachapi? It won't be long before every parent in the Tehachapi Unified School District will know Stacey Larson-Everson. It was then that Stacey and her husband Lance Larson began to plan their relocation from Fallbrook, Calif. in San Diego County where they had lived on their ranch for 14 years. It was in Fallbrook that they went through 4H with their four kids, cared for their six horses and...
On June 22, The Dance Craze hosted their fifth annual recital. For the second year, it took place at Dore Theater in Bakersfield. "The Greatest Show" was indeed the greatest show! The opening number featured 30 dancers ages 5 and up, dancing in a lively production number to the hit song, "The Greatest Showman" from the movie soundtrack. There were character representations from the whole movie including P.T. Barnum, trapeze artists, acrobats, fire breathers, lions and their tamers and much...

While the City of Tehachapi was watching the country attempting to pull itself from the Great Depression, which had begun with the 1930s, there was a new look appearing in the downtown section. Green Street was paved for the first time in 1936 and two former Tehachapi mayors, Louis Kanstein and Frank Baumgart, built a movie theater which they named after themselves! Bee for Baumgart and Kay for Kanstein. Local contractor Vince Ninteman, was the construction superintendent. The theater closed in...

Soon Tehachapi will become the hub for international and domestic hikers. The trail is about 2,663-miles long; extends through California, Oregon and Washington; and usually takes hikers more than six months to complete. The current hikers have been hiking for weeks, sometimes months, when they arrive in town with their unmistakable smiles and tans....
This show has been rescheduled from March 8 to the 16th due to weather. Whitherward: a 13th-century word meaning, "toward what or which place." It's also a 21st-century acoustic band. In 2014, Edward Williams and Ashley Norton formed Whitherward and set a goal to leave Nashville "to play music we love for people that love music." The travelling duo, with the addition of Stephanie Groot on fiddle, mandolin and ukulele, will bring their brand of Americana/Indie-Folk to Fiddlers Crossing on Friday,...

Did you know, the original BeeKay marquee was the first neon sign in Tehachapi when the theater opened in 1936? The City of Tehachapi had an exact (although more proportional) reproduction made for the BeeKay reconstruction in 2008. In honor of Tehachapi Community Theatre's 50th anniversary, here are five trivia questions about theater life in Tehachapi. (Scroll down below this article for answers.) Question 1: What does the BEE and the KAY stand for in BeeKay Theatre? A. Bell & Kalyan B. Beech...
The Apple Festival was meant to be family and especially kid-friendly. When streets are closed and the environment feels safe, parents are comfortable letting their kids go and have fun. That is what we hoped to accomplish at this year's Apple Festival. Our best estimate is that at least 2,100 kids enjoyed the bounce houses. The Tehachapi Wrestling team, lead by Curtis Nelson, kept that area safe and organized. At the far end of Green Street, thousands of prizes for games were gone in the blink...
How do you make an event exciting year to year? You look at what worked, who came and what will bring them back. The Apple Festival, which will take place this year on Green Street in Downtown Tehachapi on Oct. 13 from 10 to 6 p.m. and 10 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 14, keeps adding more family fun. Besides the traditional Kid Zone with numerous bounce houses, which kids can experience for hours on end with the purchase of a $10 bracelet, last year we had free face painting and a glider plane experience...
Aloha! I was recently blessed with being able to visit Hawaii, lava and all. Fortunately, our boat was not hit by a lava bomb. That sad incident occurred three days after we were there. My heart goes out to the tourists aboard the unlucky boat, as well as those who were killed on the duck boat in Missouri. Vacations are supposed to be fun and memorable. How dreadful when tragedy strikes. We were blessed with good luck, colorful sand beaches with sea turtles, kayaking and colorful fish beneath th...
