The family members and many friends of Christopher Edward Esten, 74, are mourning his unexpected passing on Sept. 13 in Tehachapi from cardiac arrest. Here are a couple of stories that have come to me via the Internet, stories I think are worth sharing. One perhaps will make you smile; one may make you think before you react to some situations; both are by unknown authors: Dear Dad A father passing by his son's bedroom noticed the room was unusually clean, and he saw an envelope propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, 'Dad'. With the worst premonition, the father opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands....
Wildfires are a threat and a reality of living in California, and we rely on the courage and competence of firefighters to help keep us safe from wildland fires. One of these wildfire warriors is Brandon Asher, who is an Air Operations Battalion Chief at Kern County Fire Department operating out of Keene Helibase. We are very proud to have him teaching the Firefighting Training class at Cerro Coso Community College's Tehachapi Campus. Brandon taught the class last Spring semester and will be...
After 6 months of planning, writing, gathering photos and seeking voices from within our community, The Loop newspaper is proud to present their newest Experience Tehachapi magazine – on stands now! I've been lucky enough to be the magazine's Editor-in-Chief for the last three years, and with full understanding of my bias and lack of objectivity in the following statement, it is the best publication Tehachapi has to offer. It can be coined a visitor's guide, but to me it is so much more. It i...
A “threshold concept” is something that one is aware of and understands to a certain extent, but it is the actual experience of the concept that makes it real. My threshold concept was transformed and made real the moment I found myself frozen in shock after receiving the text telling me that my former classmate and friend had taken their life. My “concept” of suicide was suddenly real, as was the pain of losing someone close to me. Unfortunately, that is what is happening rapidly to many ac...
Geraldine Jacinta Mary McConville Stephens was born June 16, 1947 in Portadown, County Armagh in Northern Ireland. She was born to Rory and Gertie (Gilpin) McConville, and was the second born of 10 children. As the firstborn girl, she naturally became the "second mom" to her brothers, sisters and many in the same Irish community in which she grew up - as a natural caregiver, babysitter and a feisty irishwoman that wouldn't put up with any shenanigans. Jeri's father Rory left Ireland to pursue...

On hand to receive the donation at the existing museum facilit...
Tehachapi High School's home opener two weeks ago was an important night for the THS football program and the community in general. After years of neglect and disrepair, and one year after an embarrassing home opener that included failed lighting, scoreboard and a broken sound system later in the season, Coy Burnett Stadium shined. This Friday was different thanks to the efforts over the last 12 months by members of the Tehachapi Warriors Booster Club board of directors, our members and the...
The Tehachapi Mountains are blessed with scenic landscapes, picturesque wildlife, interesting weather and four distinct seasons. But in addition to these natural features, one of the treasures of our area has always been its people, and one of the true diamonds is a wonderful lady named Patricia Gracey, who will turn 95 on September 2 of this year. Pat Gracey was raised in Tehachapi and is a historian of our area, writing the Spirit of Tehachapi column for The Loop and writing in other...
The Tehachapi Warriors Booster Club would like to thank the community once again for a very successful membership drive and football “Green Seat” sale that culminated on Saturday, Aug. 5 with over $13,000 raised between membership dues and seat sales. “It was one of our busiest renewal times and green seat sales in recent memory. The fans and supporters are very excited about the start of this football season and our sports season in general at Tehachapi High School,” said Booster Club President Corey Costelloe. Green seat purchases are an...
I was thinking of writing something else this evening for my column, but a sudden and surprising rainstorm happened and that got the memory center in my brain working. I love thunderstorms; I think I always have. I don't ever remember being scared in one, but I do have lots of memories of enjoying them. Having grown up mostly in the Midwest, I had plenty of opportunities for stormy experiences. One memorable storm was in Chariton, Iowa, the summer I was 12. The thunder and lightning were simulta...
Chalk on the Walk 2023 was a huge success! With over 80 drawings completed, the sidewalks of Downtown Tehachapi became a magical gallery showing off the creative talent of our community. The atmosphere downtown was filled with an upbeat joyfulness. Artists helping artists, oohs and ahhs as passerbys who stopped to take in the bountiful colors and chat with the artists about the inspiration for their artwork and a peaceful togetherness that made for a truly beautiful event. Tehachapi Valley Arts...

Visitors may request entry into the facilities by ringing a doorbell located on the front doors of the office. Office staff will then visually inspect the...

We have made it! This year is the 60th anniversary of Tehachapi Mountain Festival. This year is the Diamond Jubilee! A good time to look back at our mountain city, the Land of Four Seasons. I wrote a column in 2014 taken from the 1968 Lilac Festival brochure that I had found in my mother, Marion Deaver's, files – it was the only one she had saved. So, having discovered the library at Tehachapi Museum, thanks to Del Troy, I once again imposed upon her to let me see some of the other old b...
While you're out and about at the Tehachapi Mountain Festival on Aug. 19 and 20 be sure to stop by the Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society's Jewelry, Gem and Mineral Show at the Tehachapi Senior Center. There will be lots to see and do for all ages. Vendors will be showing and selling beautiful showcase minerals, fossils, polished rocks, beads and handcrafted jewelry. This might be just the place to pick up a unique Christmas or birthday gift for that "hard to shop for" friend or relative....
The Rotary Club of Tehachapi attained Peacebuilding Club status this past year through local projects to combat hunger, contributing to the eradication of polio, encourage literacy, etc. Peacebuilding is not just about the absence of violence or conflict. Peacebuilding is the process of encouraging people to talk to each other, to make an effort to understand each other, repair relationships and reform institutions. We as a society need to remove the conditions that are inhibitors to peace, such...
There are two events that have occurred every August for many decades in Tehachapi. One is the annual Tehachapi Mountain Festival, typically on the third weekend in August, and the other is the Tehachapi Oldtimers Reunion, held on the first Sunday in August. The Oldtimers Reunion is open to people who have lived in the Tehachapi area for at least 40 years, and also to anyone who lived here 40 years ago or more, even if they moved away long ago. It's a chance for people who don't get to see each...
Our community has long been one with deep, caring roots – where loving our neighbors as ourselves is one of our core values. That’s how the Family Life Pregnancy Center came to be. In 1989, two women saw and heard the cries of young women and men struggling with a pregnancy or family difficulty, caught up in a world that can be so divisive. They wanted to help. Today, the center still hears those cries and desires to help all those in need. Over the years, people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, ages and ethnicity have walked through our doors...
Tehachapi's Gem and Mineral group is always rolling along and up to something interesting. Did you make it to our yard sale June 24? The yard sale started two years ago as a way to assist the Senior Center after a rough couple years of COVID. The pandemic forced seniors to stay home to avoid contact and yet the building and utilities continued to rack up bills. Given Tehachapi Valley Gem and Mineral Society's close relationship with the Senior Center, we knew we had to do something to help....
Tehachapi's new Police Chief Richard Standridge was ceremonially sworn into office and pinned by his son Ethan at the June 19 City Council meeting. He reported for work a week later on June 26. Standridge had held the office of Police Chief in Bishop since 2021. Although Standridge was actually hired by the City of Tehachapi in April, he gave the Bishop Police Department a 60 day notice before reporting to Tehachapi. Since taking office, Chief Standridge has been commuting each week from...
