The presentation began with a video welcome by Mayor Susan Wiggins. Garrett introduced a video of each department head who in turn...
Keeps getting better – The city of Tehachapi will be debt-free in two years, Tehachapi City Manager Greg Garrett told the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council on Feb. 6. I've written before about the great work being done by very smart and talented people on behalf of the City of Tehachapi. It's work that has an everyday positive impact for the community, our citizens and those who simply visit Tehachapi to experience for themselves the wonderful place we've created. That work continues to be recognized regionally and from time to time we'll be awarded for those efforts. This year I'm happy to announce that the Kern Council of Governments has selected the City...
All TV screens in the Police Department Community Room were playing the cartoon "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and all that could be heard were the excited voices of the 22 boys and girls who knew they were going to have a pizza dinner and then go Christmas shopping at Kmart with their law enforcement escorts. The Dec. 13 event was held for the fourth year here in Tehachapi and the seventh year all across the country. The Tehachapi Police Foundation was the primary organizer of the local...

Originally known as Papa's the restaurant is back with a new owner, Dan Desmond. Pizza is still a staple of the new menu. Breads, sauces and pizza dough are handmade, as they should be. Desmond said, "We're trying to keep the legacy of the original owners going." Papa's House is open every day except Monday. Stop by and try a...

Who will sit on the City Council after Nov. 6? Malibu attorney Kevin Shenkman accomplished what he set out to do when he sent a letter to the Tehachapi City Council demanding that it slice up the city into electoral districts to balance a supposed racial and ethnic inequality in voting. The City Council, fearing a multi-million-dollar lawsuit if they refused, said OK, we'll do it. They decided to jettison the at-large election system and hired a consultant to divide the city into voting blocs. T...

They had lived in Okinawa for about five years while he was working for the Department of Defense. By the end of August, their furniture still had not arrived and they were sleeping on a huge air mattress in the middle of the living room floor with no idea when to expect their belongings. Michelle said that they really hated to...

It was her new position with Tehachapi Unified School District that brought Lisa Villalpondo and her husband Richard to Tehachapi after having lived in Shafter for many years. They arrived in the middle of summer, just in time to settle in before the beginning of the school year. Lisa is the new sixth grade English teacher at Jabobsen Middle School. The business of the City isn't always conducted at City Hall or City Council meetings. Matter of fact, much of what is done to benefit the citizens and the community is conducted at a variety of meetings and networking opportunities, many that take place right here in Tehachapi. Take emergency preparedness and response for example. Just last week the Kern Operational Area Advisory Committee met at the Tehachapi Police Department as first responders and Kern County Emergency Operations Center sta...

I hoped the community enjoyed the All American 4th of July Festival and the Fireworks Spectacular hosted by the City of Tehachapi. It has become a marquee event for our community and it attracts visitors from all over, especially as many surrounding municipalities no longer provide such festivities on our Independence Day. I couldn't help but be very proud of our town, our citizens and our country this past 4th of July. We really are blessed to not only live in this Nation, but in this...
