(Once again, especially for S. and E., with love.) TV ads say, "It's amazing what happens when you quit smoking," and the pictures are of people smiling and enjoying the good life. As if quitting smoking makes everything better – amazingly so! – the very moment you snub out your last butt. I kicked the habit 16 years ago, and I can tell you it was amazing – it was amazing to me how hellish it was at the time. I finished my last cigarette at 3:32 p.m. on December 23, 1993 (ex-smokers remem...

Alcott’s beloved “Little Women” was hardly a labor of love for its author. When her publisher requested a “girl story,” Alcott wanted no part of it. Her writing interests were Gothics, thrillers and stage plays. Still, her own history proved that she would take on practically any chore to bring funds to her struggling family. Tutoring, sewing, and housekeeping were included and since a publisher was willing to pay her to write, Alcott accepted. Her journal reflects her initial protest....

In the early 80s I was Recreation Director for Big Sisters of Marin, which meant I planned and implemented a variety of cultural, educational and recreational activities for the big and little sisters and brothers. Some of our activities included the siblings of the kids in the program, some included their whole families. Occasionally I would take a little brother or sister to the day's festivities if their own big sister was unable to attend. So it was that I went to pick up 9-year-old Rachael...

When Monica Nadon began her quest to bring Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" to the TCT stage in 2006, she read through several adaptations to decide which one she would choose. The problem was, Nadon really wasn't happy with any one version. "None of them seemed to hold completely true to the novel's soul," said Nadon. "Much of the emotional depth you experienced in her novel, was simply missing. I wanted to highlight Alcott's amazing skill in showing how each 'little woman' morphed into her o...

Summer is the time for fun and travel, and the Kick-Stomp Ensemble should bring plenty of both when their wild mixture of edgy folk, punk and world music comes to Fiddlers Crossing on Saturday, July 27. The travel, of course, will be a musical journey throughout the world – spanning many cultures, traditions and languages. This eclectic quartet will even take us to a cantina in a galaxy far, far away, playing a popular tune on the banjo. Be prepared, however, for a world slightly twisted and p...

I love going to the movies, but I'm not sure I could tell you what my favorite part of the experience is – it could be the story being told on the screen, or it could be the tub of popcorn in my lap. I really like the kind of movie theater popcorn you can only get in a theater – no matter how they package the stuff at the grocery store and try to pass it off as being the same thing, it just ain't – and I even like the butter flavoring they put on it. I suppose if I got right down to it, I'd h...

The other day I was feeling pretty frustrated and blue and somewhat angry about the world situation in general, so I turned off the news and decided to take myself out to breakfast. That was very satisfying but I still felt the need to do something positive, something good for myself, to get my head right again. I decided to visit CALM – the California Living Museum in Bakersfield. I kinda chuckled as I thought to myself "I needed to calm down!"... and CALM seemed perfectly suited for that p...

My father passed shortly after Father's Day in June of 2000. I miss him still, and think of him often. For Father's Day this year, I would once again like to honor him and thank him. Thanks, dad, for making my childhood a time of laughter and learning, a time of adventure and travel and new experiences, and a time to collect so very many rich memories that I have treasured for a lifetime. Though it's been 19 years since I last got to talk to you or see you, some of those memories still seem...
