Charlee (Charlotte Ruse) has been making jewelry for over 20 years. One day, when at an arts & crafts festival, she saw a pair of earrings and, noting the price, she thought, "I can make that." So she went to a class, learned how to wrap jewelry and that was that. After doing arts and crafts festivals for more years than she cares to admit to, Charlotte decided, "Enough with this hauling stuff all over the state." She began selling her wares to shops in Northern California, hired a couple friend...

As a descendant of Cornish miners who had a tradition of singing while they worked in the mines, singer-songwriter Rita Hosking grew up with a deep regard for the power of the human voice. In her songs, she draws on her own childhood growing up outside of Mount Shasta, as well as her family's roots in the gold mines of Grass Valley. She sings of forest fires, demolition derbies and the hopes and dreams of the working class in the small town of her youth. While rooted in Northern California,...

Over that time, it has gained a reputation among the top ranks of touring musicians as a fun and friendly place to perform, with a terrific and responsive audience. This has resulted in some outstanding musicians stopping to perform in Tehachapi who would otherwise be passing right on by to their concerts in the big music festivals, in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. On May 1,...

Anyone who has attended music festivals in California is bound to know the band Houston Jones. The “High-Octane” Americana quintet is one of the most popular groups on the circuit. Lately, however, the co-founders guitarist Glenn Houston and vocalist/guitarist Travis Jones have taken a side-trip as a duo. It’s hard to believe that less could be more in the case of Houston Jones, but the Houston and Jones reduction proves that the band rocks solid at its core. The duo will rock Fiddlers Crossing on Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. Their origi...

Fiddlers Crossing first opened on Saturday, April 17, 2010, with a performance by local band Geezers on the Loose. The establishment opened as “a work in progress” in what had been the Art Center. According to co-founder Peter Cutler, “We threw a venue together with whatever we had lying around, slapped some ugly paint on the walls and some even uglie...
Listening to the old-school country songs and honest back porch voice of Amber Cross has been likened to putting an archival Smithsonian recording on the turntable. Hers is an authentic voice, both in sound and feeling. She writes from her own life’s struggles and experiences, with great power and emotion and a sense of place. Originally from Maine, Cross spent her early years surrounded by gospel music in a small town church where her father preached and her mother played piano. Today she lives on California’s central coast, where she spe...

It’s often true that parents and their offspring have different ideas about what constitutes “good music”. Perhaps I lucked out, having grown up with Gary Mazzola and Joy Gray, both talented songwriters and musicians, as parents. Music was something personal, made right there in our home. Some of my earliest memories include the harmony of their voices, the strumming of guitars and their creative lyrics. While I can’t speak for how they may have felt about some of my music choices growing up, I feel privileged to say that the music they ma...
