It’s often true that parents and their offspring have different ideas about what constitutes “good music”. Perhaps I lucked out, having grown up with Gary Mazzola and Joy Gray, both talented songwriters and musicians, as parents. Music was something personal, made right there in our home. Some of my earliest memories include the harmony of their voices, the strumming of guitars and their creative lyrics. While I can’t speak for how they may have felt about some of my music choices growing up, I feel privileged to say that the music they ma...
As part of The Loop newspaper’s continuing Artist Series we feature oil artist Vicki Braslow. What inspires you to paint? Vicki: How can you not be inspired when you live here in Tehachapi. Natural beauty is everywhere here in the mountains. Do you paint ‘plein air’ (painting outdoors) or work from photos? Vicki: At one time I did a little plein air, but I found I like to take my time, work a little slower and a bit more presise. So, I work from photos that I have taken, or that my brother who is a professional photographer, might send me. W...
Sylvia is TCT's newest main stage production, opening Friday, January 30, 2015 through Valentine's weekend. This play is about relationships – a man, his wife and the stray dog (Sylvia) he finds in the park and falls in love with. The man's affection for Sylvia costs him his job and almost his marriage. Sylvia is an adult comedy, but first and foremost it is a heartwarming love story, and TCT is sure we all have a Sylvia of our own. Send TCT the cutest photo of your dog for the "Show Us Your Syl...

Tehachapi is one of those lucky communities which is blessed with two posts: Post 12114, and Post 5948 on Tehachapi Blvd. Post 5948 was chartered in May of 1960 and has been at its current location on Tehachapi Blvd. since 2000. Veterans come in all sizes and ages these days, and currently there are 240 members who call Post 5948 their home away from home. "We have members who served in WWII, Iraq,...
TCT presents Wait Until Dark That’s the question asked by Tehachapi Community Theatre’s season opener Wait Until Dark. The 1967 film starring Audrey Hepburn was listed in the AFI top 100 suspense/thrillers, and terror lurks in this play. Susy Hendrix (Audriana Lathrop) lost her vision in an accident only a year before and is still learning to deal with her new reality. She has been helped in this by her new husband Sam (played by Joseph Lathrop in his TCT debut), who is firm but encouraging. And it is Sam’s basic goodness that gets them in tr...
Fall always makes me think of children kicking and jumping on raked-up piles of leaves and laughter. Always laughter. It doesn’t really take a lot to entertain kids, a pile of leaves, a clod of dirt, a shovel and permission to dig, or even a large cardboard box to play in. At least it used to be that way, or am I showing my age? One of the first hints of fall, besides the liquid amber trees starting to turn color or the lengthening shadows, is that special feeling in the air, especially in the e...

One critic said of Americana singer-songwriter Dulcie Taylor that she is "a major talent who's been hiding from the rest of us for too long." Bringing "hidden talents" to Tehachapi is one of the goals of Fiddlers Crossing. Taylor will be performing at the downtown Tehachapi music venue on October 10, at 7 p.m. She will be joined by guitarist George Nauful and percussionist Tracy A. Morgan. Dulcie Taylor learned a hard music lesson at an early age – don't leave your ukulele unattended in a p...

The logo for the duo, JC & Laney reads, "Heart 'n' Soul & Rock 'n' Roll." That's the perfect summary for this dynamic musical duo who will take the stage at Fiddlers Crossing on Friday, September 26. Although they have been together for just five years, they have already released five CDs of original compositions, are regularly played on Pandora, Spotify, and dozens of other internet radio stations, and have had many of their songs picked up by touring artists throughout Europe and the US. JC...

The Art of Photography is the theme for the First Friday event at Tehachapi Community Congregational Church, corner of Green and E Streets, from 5 - 8 p.m. on September 5. Several of Tehachapi's best photographers will be displaying their work. The church is especially pleased to show the work of Dick Burdine who passed away August 13. He spent years taking pictures, specializing in scenes of sunsets and waterfalls. He sold hundreds of pictures and gave many away as gifts. Another member, Jim Carmichael, began his interest in photography in...
On Friday, September 5, Fiddlers Crossing is bringing back one of the favorite performers from last year. Angelo M is an authentic voice of experience from the American Heartland, whether singing the blues or other styles of American "roots" music. Angelo M (short for Melasecca) was a hit with Tehachapi's audience because he is the real deal. Many performers can sing the blues, but this former steel worker has lived it. When the Pennsylvania steel mill where he had worked for nearly 30 years...
Fiddlers Crossing is putting a classical note on the end of summer by presenting a string quintet in concert on Friday, Aug. 22.
