Neighbors of Philip Marx Central Park have adopted four carved stump sculptures that the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District ordered removed Aug. 17 for safety reasons. The Loop asked me to write a column on July 4th memories, so departing from my mother’s history, I am going to search my own brain. My parents brought me to the fireworks in Tehachapi each year when I was little and parked along Highline Road so we could see the show from a distance (and I do mean distance!) That way my dad, who always drove, could make a quick getaway back to Mojave along Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road, and onto Oak Creek Road back to town. That yearly trek instilled in me a l...
When I was a kid, the best image of Pluto from Mount Palomar was a fuzzy dot. The great Hubble Space Telescope later gave us a fuzzy ball, which wasn’t much more satisfying. Something drastic had to be done about this problem. So in 2006, America vented its frustration by sending a grand-piano-sized probe called New Horizons to take a very good look at Pluto and its moons. We are a patient people. Now it is time to savor and celebrate. After over nine years in space, New Horizons will make i...

I had the pleasure of experiencing a fishing derby for the first time in my life! I must admit that I am NOT a morning person, but I think I'm going to convert. The Tehachapi mountains are glorious as the sun rises! I poured my coffee, grabbed my note pad and headed for Brite Lake. My daughter Blanca and her friend Elise were happy to accompany me. The first thing they noticed upon arrival was the booth set up by the Stallion Springs 4-H Club! They had doughnuts, hot chocolate and coffee with...

Last week, I attended a meeting at the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District, as I often do, and I was approached by someone there who thanked me for the Christmas lights at our Wastewater Treatment Facility. This person told me that he enjoyed seeing the lights on his nightly commute and that they gave him the feeling of being home. Though the lights are temporary, they serve as a bit of a landmark for him, and maybe some others, that indicate they can relax and enjoy this great place...
It is with great excitement that the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District announces the removal of out of district fees for all of our programs. Following the de-annexation of Bear Valley Springs and Stallion Springs, the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District elected to assess an out of district fee for all non-residents, specifically those in Stallion Springs and Bear Valley Springs. This fee, in the amount of $15, was meant to off-set the loss of tax revenue resulting from the de-annexation. After thorough evaluation by...

Some of Tehachapi's longest-living citizens traveled to the event...
