  • Free alternatives to expensive software

    Greg Cunningham|Apr 15, 2017

A new computer comes with everything you need to do the basics, like checking your email, doing some web browsing, binge-watching something on Netflix, or enjoying a little shopping on Amazon. But what if you need to write a letter, do some 3D animation, design a logo, record a multitrack tune, edit a video, or remove the tourists from your photo of the Eiffel tower? To do any of those things, you need to buy specialized software, and most of it is pretty expensive. Try these free alternatives...

  • Promote local events on the Tehachapi App

    Mar 18, 2017

The City of Tehachapi and the Tehachapi Tourism Commission want to make sure that they have all upcoming community events on the Tehachapi App. The App, which is a free download on the App Store and Google Play, is quickly becoming the way to keep up on events in Tehachapi for tourists and residents alike. Of course, it includes our hotels, restaurants and tourist venues. However, it also includes the events and celebrations that are the reason many people come to Tehachapi. Many Tehachapi...

  • Indian Point says farewell after 25 years

    Pat Doody|Feb 4, 2017

After 25 years of being one of Kern County's best known tourist destinations, Indian Point Ostrich Ranch will be permanently closing its doors at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. When owners Joel and Marcy Brust decided last year that they needed to retire, they began a search for someone to take over the tourist venue either at their ranch or moving it to a new location. A year of repeated attempts to find a buyer for the gift shop and tour operations were unsuccessful so, sadly, the day has finally...

  • East Kern weather

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Nov 12, 2016

Fall has arrived in all of Eastern Kern and of course Tehachapi, where the morning temperatures are a bit cooler than say, Ridgecrest. I was looking for stories about weather and actually found two articles that my mother Marion Deaver had written about desert weather. Of course we all know by now from reading my column that my mother never thought to include a date on anything she cut out to save. I believe the first article was from the early ‘60s as the community of Mojave sought to grow a...

  • Five Years After the Shuttle

    Dale Hawkins|Jun 25, 2016

President Obama is a lame duck. That means that his primary focus is no longer on bold plans for the future, but on what his administration has accomplished over the last eight years – his legacy. My personal feeling is that history will judge him to have been a decent president; not stellar, but not bad. He came into office with a global economy in chaos and an America entangled in a nightmarishly complex international situation. Yet, we're now doing fairly well when viewed from a global perspe...

  • Visitor Center a Reality

    Pat Doody|May 14, 2016

For many years, we have heard that Tehachapi will have a wonderful Visitor Center. Well, if you have recently driven past the corner of Tehachapi Blvd. and Curry St., you know that it is becoming a reality. The scheduled opening of Freedom Plaza and the Tehachapi Visitor Center is late in June. Freedom Plaza will be a lovely parklike setting with shade, trees, tables and a play area for children. The centerpiece of the plaza will be monuments representing the five branches of our military. The...

  • The Lebec Hotel

    Pat Gracey|Oct 10, 2015

Some days ago the Californian featured an article about the old Ridge Route Highway that took one from the San Joaquin Valley to the L.A. area. In 1988 I had written an article about an old hotel, The Lebec Hotel, which was a rather famous and beautiful stopping place. I had visions of pulling an old article out of my files and quickly copying a vintage story I had written about the old lodging place. It’s harder to rewrite than it is to write and I spent hours revising my own copy. The Lebec H...

  • Occultations, conjunctions, eclipses, oh my!

    Dale Hawkins|Sep 26, 2015

8 has certainly been a year for celestial alignments! As we go to press, there will be a total lunar eclipse tomorrow (September 27th), which I told you about last month. In brief, the sun will set at 6:44 with the moon rising already in partial eclipse. Totality begins at 7:11 and ends at 8:23 p.m. This will be the fattest eclipsed moon we will ever see, because the moon will be at the closest point in its orbit (perigee). Tehachapi already enjoyed a total lunar eclipse last April, plus two...

  • Tehachapi's first 50

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Apr 25, 2015

Most of us remember the 100th birthday of the city of Tehachapi held in 2009 in front of the steps of the present city hall complete with a jumbo-tron. But some of you have been here long enough to remember Tehachapi’s 50th anniversary, which my mother Marion Deaver wrote about in 1959. In 1909 the downtown was lit by a dozen gasoline street lights which shone down dimly each night on the dirt streets of the city. If a fire broke out, volunteer firemen rushed to the scene with a hand-drawn t...

  • Winter Wednesdays at Triassic Legacy Vineyards

    Annie Arnold|Nov 22, 2014

It’s now been one full year since I moved up here permanently. ”Here” meaning country living at 4000 feet, with wind, seasons, and life-style changes. I’ve been meeting people from the community and residents from all over the greater Tehachapi region, as well as tourists and visitors who’ve come to sample wine in the tasting room at Triassic. As my family and I have spoken many times, “There’s intrigue in the people up here, and the stories of their lives add to the quality of our lives.” Whether you made a choice to move or you grew up her...

  • Apples, Apples Everywhere - Apple Festival Returns

    Linda Carhart|Sep 27, 2014

The Apple Festival was an incredible success last year, so its coming back and this year it will be even more apple-y. David Brust, the event organizer, announced that this year the festival will be a two-day event on October 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Railroad Park and Robinson Street, in Tehachapi. Some of the things that you can expect are even more apple related items, including apple cider, apple drinks, more farmers with apples, and each vendor will have something apple-y....

  • Tehachapi GranFondo Festival

    Shirley Given|Aug 16, 2014

A GranFondo is likened to one of those giant (serves 4-6) sundaes, offered in ice cream shoppes. To begin, the sundae glass is the incredible mountain scenery. To this, one would add several large scoops of ice cream or participants ranging from professionals to 80 year-old tourists. In lieu of hot fudge, pineapple and caramel toppings, you add mechanical and medical support, feeding and hydration stations and bring traffic to a screeching halt. Sprinkle with lots of enthusiasm and supportive...

  • County Supervisors Approve 2014 Tourism Grant Recipients

    Jan 18, 2014

Efforts to bolster the local visitor industry received a significant boost on Dec. 3, 2013 when the Kern County Board of Supervisors approved $100,000 worth of financial assistance through its popular Tourism Promotion Grant Program. It is anticipated that awards for the 2014 grant cycle will be dispersed to recipients in January on behalf of the Board of Supervisors, who approved the awards. Now in its 13th year, the program has provided 263 grants totaling $1,865,000 since its inception in 2001. The program is administered by the Kern County...
