This is a great question and one I hear often. Families usually want to come in right away and prepare. My first response is stay home with your loved one. Time with your loved one is your most precious commodity. I have had instances where families were at the funeral home preparing and their loved one passed away while they were with me. This can be devastating. We can help you begin this difficult process at home and aid you in preparing for a meeting with an arrangement counselor after your loved one has passed. I advise that, instead of co...

Back in WWII the skies over Tehachapi were a constat buzz as B-24s training at Muroc would make the trip over our mountain home to the San Joaquin mountains, then north to a point where they crossed over the Sierras and returned down the Owens Valley. One of those planes became a painful reminder of the price young Americans and their families were paying as they trained for war. The story of #42-73358 and a lost crew in Kern County Lieutenants Bauscher and Hauplnthal were enjoying New Year's...

Giving back, it’s almost become a generic term, and it’s meaning is probably different for each one of us. For me it meant taking the opportunities I had, finding areas that were important to me and trying to make a difference in my communities. First, you must find your passions. If you’re going to make a difference you need to know what drives you, and where you can make a difference in something that is important to you. For me it was always veterans and kids. I knew for me to give back,...
Sometimes when reliving memories of years past I think of something that is just too good to keep to myself. My husband and his friend, Sergeant Major Frederick W. Filkins, were what you would call "brothers in the Corps." Both served in World War II, both with the China Marines, veterans of Korea and Vietnam. They often found themselves in the same duty station during the 30 years they spent in the Corps. One day, many years back, when Fred was telling one of his experiences, I turned on a...

It isn't often that one of our local Honor Flight recipients is a woman, but this year proved to be an exception. Well-known and long time resident, Diane Griffin, was the 2023 honoree. Her flight departed Oct. 16 and returned on Oct. 18. And, even more unusual was the fact that three other Honor Flight recipients were also female, as well as their guardian Kay Philips of Tehachapi and bus leader, Arlene Aninion. Both were veterans themselves. Each person had one regulation bag that they were...
