    Apr 27, 2019

Each May, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221, along with members of the American Legion Post, offer poppies to the community to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. During WWI, the bright red poppies flowering in the spring on the battlefields of the Western Front became synonymous with the casualties of war. The following poem, written in 1915 by Canadian Lt.Col. John McCrae, M.D., ingrained the poppy in our minds. The poppy became the memorial flower...

  • The snowball effect of giving back

    Julianna Crisalli|Feb 16, 2019

Last week I visited Have a Heart Humane Society, not to adopt the adorable puppy I fell in love with, but to witness a wonderful act of kindness. For the last eight years, Red House BBQ owners Mano and Mei Mei Lujan have held their Super Bowl Charity BBQ Cater, offering the highest bidder a Super Bowl meal that feeds 25. This year, Barbara Ferrante, proprietor of Jake's Steakhouse, was the winner with her $425 bid. Not only did she win the 25 meals, but the chance to donate her bid to a local...

  • Our Veterans deserve better

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Feb 2, 2019

If you have a VA loan, I bet your phone is ringing off the hook with offers to "save you money." Or at least, you are receiving multiple postcards by mail, encouraging you to "Refinance NOW!" As a prudent consumer, you already know that anyone who is calling to sell you something is doing just that: Selling you something. If you have not initiated the contact, beware. VA loans are big business, and these offers are not always in the best interest of the Veteran. Here's what contributors to the R...

    Cathy Hansen|Jan 5, 2019

Exciting dreams come true at Mojave Air & Spaceport! The attempt to soar 264,000-feet, or 50-miles, above the surface of Earth, beyond the boundary of what the U.S. government deems as space, was a milestone for the team and TheSpaceShipCompany at...

The Santa Clarita area grew too much said Kathe and they found Tehachapi a beautiful peaceful place to live. Fortunately, Robin does not do a daily commute to work. He is the Facilities Manager of the West Los Angeles...

  • Veteran shares stories, smiles with Golden Hills daycare

    Julianna Crisalli|Nov 24, 2018

I have two very sweet and polite kids, but like all children, I know their attention span and ability to stay quiet when others are talking requires saintly patience. So, it was incredible for me to watch a group of elementary school children remain completely captivated by the stories and songs of Richard Oldenburg. In honor of Veterans Day, Oldenburg visited Golden Hills Extended Daycare on Nov. 15 to share stories of his time in the service. The kids were quiet as he talked about life at...

While Adventist Health, a private entity, will operate and manage the new hospital for 30 years, the healthcare district will expand its mandate as a conduit for community healthcare...

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Oct 13, 2018

Michael Biglay ~ In canvassing the District, Michael Biglay said he found that the number one issue that people are concerned about is crime. "Everybody wants more deputies," he said. He wants to see more growth, more jobs and an emphasis on public safety. Different communities have different concerns, he said -- in Boron, it's theft and trash dumping; in Taft, the issue is roads. Biglay would begin Town Hall meetings and workshops to identify what is needed most. "I don't feel we get...

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Oct 13, 2018

Who will sit on the City Council after Nov. 6? Malibu attorney Kevin Shenkman accomplished what he set out to do when he sent a letter to the Tehachapi City Council demanding that it slice up the city into electoral districts to balance a supposed racial and ethnic inequality in voting. The City Council, fearing a multi-million-dollar lawsuit if they refused, said OK, we'll do it. They decided to jettison the at-large election system and hired a consultant to divide the city into voting blocs. T...

Besides the traditional Kid Zone with numerous bounce houses, which kids can experience for hours on end with the purchase of a $10 bracelet, last year we had free face painting and a glider plane experience...

  • Brig. Gen. Robert L. Cardenas, USAF

    Cathy Hansen|Sep 15, 2018

Do you know the feeling of meeting a person and instantly there seems to be a connection? That often happens to me when meeting folks from the aviation community. In 2005, at the Aerospace Walk of Honor in Lancaster, we displayed our UH-1H helicopter and also attended the black tie banquet held that evening. Five test pilots are honored each year and the 2005 honorees included: Major General Wilbert D. Pearson, USAF; NASA Research Test Pilot Edward T. Schneider; F-5F Chief Project Test Pilot,...

  • Lest we forget – Memorial Day

    Pat Gracey|May 26, 2018

It was brought to my attention that the monument in Philip Marx Central Park has been, once again, defaced by unknown parties. Those attending the Memorial Day Service will be able to see the damage done. It's a shame that people cannot look at the names on the plaque and know the story behind them. These are the names of what we term Gold Star Veterans: people who were killed in action. If those doing the damage were to know, just a few of the facts, they would never dream of doing harm to the...
