  • A woman's guide to health care in retirement – Part 2

Jennifer Williams, President J Williams Personal Financial Planning|Jan 20, 2018

Buying long-term care (LTC) insurance is an option. While premiums may be costly, having LTC insurance may allow you to elect where you receive your care, the type of care you receive, and who provides care to you. Many LTC insurance policies pay for the cost of care provided in a nursing home, assisted-living facility, or at home, but the cost of coverage generally depends on your age and the policy benefits and options you purchase. And premiums can increase if the insurer raises its overall...

Also, thank you to the many businesses who had our donation jars available for their customers. We appreciate all of the organizations who participated in the ceremony on Dec. 16 and those that helped with the planning: Patriot Guard Riders, American Legion Post 221, American Legion...

    Cathy Hansen|Nov 25, 2017

The Douglas A-1 was originally designed in 1944 to meet World War II requirements to replace the SBD dive bomber. It was to be a carrier-based, single place, long-range, high-performance, dive/torpedo/bomber. First flight was March 1945. Douglas Aircraft Company at El Segundo developed the XSB2D Destroyer, a single engine two place dive bomber, also with the capability of torpedo attack missions. • Love and pancakes for our Veterans and Active Military

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Oct 28, 2017

Dear Friends, How should churches recognize Veteran's Day? A free pancake breakfast, on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 9 to 10 a.m. for veterans and active military personnel is our chosen response this year. Come and enjoy! Flipping flapjacks is the least I can do to say thank you to those who have served our country or are serving it still. Join us for worship afterwards at 10:30, if you like. There are many ways to honor veterans and engage with our troops, but this is my church's choice this...

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Oct 28, 2017

National Treasure – Built on a 500-acre parcel of rolling, golden, oak-studded land donated by the Tejon Ranch Company, the Bakersfield National Cemetery is the resting place for men and women who have served in the United States armed forces, their spouses and certain members of their families. The site, opened in 2009, is beautifully designed, a place of dignity and respect, and a shining example of what the National Cemetery Administration and the federal government can do. Most of those w...

  • Teakettle tea

    Pat Gracey|Sep 2, 2017

As children, my sister and I used to have tea parties. It was usually just the two of us but occasionally my brother, Buster Davis, four years my senior, would sometimes join us. His real name is Thomas but we called him Buster. A little Japanese- made tea set would be on our small table and my mother would fill our little tea pot with hot water from her teakettle. We put cream and sugar in our cups and then added the hot water. Voila! Teakettle Tea! Of course the one ingredient missing was...

  • Interview with Eric Scarlett

    Larry LaCom|Jul 22, 2017

Eric Scarlett is one of Tehachapi's claims to fame. If you've ever wondered who built the world's largest barbecue grill, or the world's biggest motorcycle, look no further than Bear Valley Springs, where Eric is a resident. Driving up to Eric's house off Jacaranda, there's a commanding view of the southern Sierra Nevada mountain range. He lives in a very nice 2-story house with a garage that looks like an automotive shop, which gives away a huge clue to one of his major hobbies. He invited me...

  • Looking back – Part 2

    Pat Gracey|Jul 8, 2017

Continuing the 85 year history of the American Legion Auxiliary: The 1930s began slipping by and it seemed that each of Roosevelt's New Deal programs all had three initials by which they were labeled. So it was that the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 221, gave a dance for the CCC workers, who were young, unemployed single men. CCC can be interpreted as, Civilian Conservation Corps but it would be few who bothered to remember. The CCC camp was northwest of Tehachapi near Keene. The Legion Hall...

  • Looking back

    Pat Gracey|Jun 24, 2017

Four Score and Five years ago the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 221 was founded in the small city of Tehachapi. To set the scene I take you back to the spring of 1932. Herbert Hoover was still President but would be soundly defeated by Franklin Roosevelt in November of that year. The depression was in full swing – money was tight-- and one of the songs of that period was, "Brother, can you spare a dime?" There were soup kitchens to feed the homeless and men, many of them being veterans of W...

  • Great men and planes who helped change history

    Cathy Hansen|Jun 24, 2017

I remember a gentleman who came up to me just after the Memorial Day Ceremony held at Mojave Cemetery on May 28, 2007, and asked if he could say a few words. He apologized for being so emotional, but he was a Pearl Harbor survivor who had served aboard the USS California (BB-44) and had been in Walmart in Lancaster, wearing his jacket bearing patches from Pearl Harbor signifying he was a survivor of the attack by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. A teenager came up to him and wanted to know...

  • A really good story

    May 27, 2017

I knew Mary Watts because she was a student at Tehachapi High School and was a classmate of my sister, Evelyn Davis, both graduates of Class of 1940. They were six years older than I so it was not until many years later that Mary and I actually became friends. The older one becomes, the more the age barriers are erased. I recall that Mary, during World War II, enlisted in the newly formed naval organization for women known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She comes...

  • Silver Medals and sweet memories

    Bill Mead|May 27, 2017

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission from Tehachapi Lifestyle Magazine, November 2012 issue. When I was a small lad in Iowa we had Civil War veterans in our Memorial Day parades. Today, I find that hard to believe even though I was there. The memory of those old Union soldiers whose war tales are now buried with them prompted me a few years ago to try writing a family history of my Dad's experiences in the First World War. By then it was clear that before...

  • $11,000 is too much

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|May 13, 2017

A repeat client phoned me and she was hoppin’ mad. “We got a VA buyer offer on our house and they want us to pay $11000 in closing costs!” That made me mad, too. Here’s why. The VA home loan program is pretty special. It allows qualified Veterans to buy a home with no down payment. Usually no down payment would mean having a monthly mortgage insurance premium in the payment, but not here. There is a one-time “funding fee” that goes towards the VA insurance fund, to cover lenders in case of you...

  • Another Fallen Hero Honor Cart to pass through Tehachapi

    Tony D. Strauss, Contributing writer|Apr 29, 2017

It's been almost a year since more than 70 motorcycles rumbled into the Tehachapi Love's Travel Stop, escorting an Alaska Airlines truck with a special cart in tow. A crowd of fascinated onlookers, cheering and waving American flags, had lined the sidewalks and parking lot to greet the procession. Veterans, youth groups, and members of the community had come to witness the transfer of a special cart known as Alaska Airlines "Fallen Soldier Cart". The turnout in Tehachapi was reported by one...

  • Non-Profit Showcase spotlights Tehachapi's big heart: Non-profits welcome volunteers, participation

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Apr 29, 2017

One thing the 28 organizations represented at Tehachapi's April 26 Non-Profit Showcase at Jacobsen Middle School gymnasium have in common – in addition to the free chocolate and pens at the booths – is the donation of thousands of hours of time. Volunteers from the organizations donate their time training service dogs, working with children, feeding the hungry, staffing the Tehachapi, Depot or Errea House museums, running service clubs, scheduling hikes to Tomo Kahni State Historic Park, rai...
