He spoke recently to the Kiwanis Club and described the experiences he has accompanying veterans on these flights. Zanuto said Honor Flights in Kern County began in 2012 with 24 veterans ranging in age from 80 to 101. Since that time he has accompanied six flights as a guardian, one who is assigned to assist veterans...

A desire for a quiet and peaceful lifestyle is what originally attracted Ellen and James Rice to Tehachapi. After 31 years as a heating and air conditioning fitter, James finally decided to retire. The couple had lived in Palmdale for 21 years and was more than ready to make the move to their mountain retreat. However, before settling into their Bear Valley home in the fall, they spent almost six months in Bridgeport, California, where James could enjoy the outdoor activities he loves: archery,...

  • Odds and ends

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Apr 11, 2015

For all my hoopla about VA loans lately, here’s something to consider if you want to use yours: If the VA has suffered a financial loss from you in the past, you may not be able to use your home loan entitlement. Twice recently we’ve run into Veterans who wanted to re-use their VA entitlement, and on both there was an old loss outstanding. One of those was from the 1980s. If you want to use your VA entitlement for home loans, you’d best get on the VA website and make sure your entitlement is cl...

Belcher was a participant in the Honor Flight program last year and expressed what an emotional experience it was for him. He was impressed with the admiration and attention the veterans received from children and adults who came up to them as they toured historical monuments in Washington D.C. Rick Zanuto, who helps organize Honor Flights, was present...

  • VA loans are good

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Mar 28, 2015

Why are realtors and sellers wary of buyers using a VA loan? They shouldn’t be. Let’s bust some myths about this great loan program. The VA home loan entitlement allows Veteran home buyers access to a loan program requiring no down payment. Way back in the day, VA loans had extra requirements about the condition of the property, and made the seller pay some of the buyer’s loan fees. Not any more. Myth: VA home loans require a 10% down payment. Truth: Veterans can apply for 100% financing for m...

  • Mojave C of C wants services, '60s style

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Feb 14, 2015

Searching through my mother Marion Deaver’s files for a column, I found an article she wrote probably in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s about a Mojave Chamber of Commerce meeting. Some of those in charge, including Milt Smith, Mojave Desert News co-owner; Robert Byers, owner of Byers Furniture; and D.C. Sparling, owner of Kayo’s Trailer Park, were appointed to a committee to research the possibility of filing a request for a Kern County Grand Jury investigation. Some chamber members believe...

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Feb 14, 2015

Healing Horses and Armed Forces (HHAAF). HHAAF is a local non-profit organization that works with veterans and their families to facilitate their return to normal life in a non-military world. Veterans too often return home after tours of duty in war zones and find it very difficult to adapt to civilian life and hold a civilian job....

  • A Christmas Story

    Shirley Given|Jan 17, 2015

Miracles and Christmas stories come in multifaceted varieties. Some earth shattering, some seemingly miraculous, and some quietly slip into our lives, all being of great value to those affected. This Christmas story began 44 years ago and came full circle this past December. It began during the Vietnam War. Yes, I know, there are those wanting it referred to as a "conflict". It was not. Ask the men and women who were part of that so-calledconflict and you will hear the word, war. Paul, as an...

VA loans are available at higher loan amounts, but a down payment is required. The cap for using FHA financing for...

  • My fearless friend Len

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 86|Jan 3, 2015

Len Burgeson, a native of the San Fernando Valley, worked on my house in Tehachapi seven years ago when I first moved in. He laid pavers, plumbed an outdoor sink and built cabinets just the way I wanted, which often did not make sense to the former union carpenter turned handyman. Len built himself a couple of houses in Sand Canyon. I had not seen him for a while when I encountered his smiling face at Save Mart with his wife Chelie Constantine. A veteran of a 1967 tour in Viet Nam that exposed...

"If this great experiment goes awry," said a person in the audience of 30 at the Kern County Veterans Memorial Building, "is there insurance to compensate people?" Another person said, "I am being treated for COPD, asthma and chronic bronchitis. Whe...

The film has brought attention to the...

    Mary Clyde, Wordsmith|Nov 8, 2014

The year was 1942 and a not quite 18 ½ year old young man, Winthrop "Win" Saville, made a choice – to enlist in what later became known as the Army Air Corps. Living in Alameda, California, at the time, Win and his buddy "Teenie" Baker signed their names on the dotted line the day before Halloween. As it turned out, Win was with the first group of Women Auxiliary Civilian Service members (WACS). Thus began Win's travels and experiences during WWII. From Alameda it was off to La Junta (...

The 93 year old survivor of Pearl Harbor said that he wanted to see his first air show and the neighbor was glad to oblige. The weather was cold, cloudy and windy, but that didn't deter the two men on their mission. Some may recall that Tays, who had been awarded four bronze stars, was recogni...

  • VFW, a Haven for Veterans

    Mary Clyde, Wordsmith|Oct 25, 2014

If a community has a local VFW, it truly is a haven for veterans from all foreign wars. Tehachapi is one of those lucky communities which is blessed with two posts: Post 12114, and Post 5948 on Tehachapi Blvd. Post 5948 was chartered in May of 1960 and has been at its current location on Tehachapi Blvd. since 2000.
