  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Nov 7, 2020

The year is coming to a close. The election will be over by the time you read this. Meanwhile, we keep forging on, dealing with COVID-19 restrictions and repercussions. The CSD Board had two seats to fill and with five contenders, the race is on! Meanwhile, good news from the CSD management. Bear Valley was able to obtain a grant for generators to aid in case of a Public Safety Power Shut-off. The value of that grant is $155,000. The grant came from Kern County Environmental. Last year, some households without water tanks had no water service...

  • VA Loans Are Good

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Jul 19, 2014

Why are Realtors and sellers wary of buyers using a VA loan? They shouldn’t be. Let’s bust some myths about this great loan program. The VA home loan entitlement allows Veteran home buyers access to a loan program requiring no down payment. Way back in the day, VA loans had extra requirements about the condition of the property, and made the seller pay some of the buyer’s loan fees. Not any more. MYTH: VA home loans require a 10% down payment. TRUTH: Veterans can apply for 100% financing for m...

  • Home Depot Flag presentation at the VFW #5948

    Linda Hardman|Jul 19, 2014

On a day when parades, picnics, and fireworks took center stage for thousands of Tehachapians this year, another event unfolded without as much overt fanfare. At approximately 1:30 p.m. July 4th, 2014, associates from the Home Depot #6835 presented the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #5948, with an American Flag signed by hundreds of customers and Home Depot associates last Memorial Day Weekend. The American Flag is three feet by five feet and made of pieces of painted wood which fit together to...

  • Fred and The 'Duke'

    Pat Gracey|Jun 21, 2014

Sometimes when reliving memories of years past I think of something that is just too good to keep to myself. My husband and his friend, Sergeant Major, Frederick W. Filkins, were what you would call "brothers in the Corps." Both served in World War II, both were with the China Marines, veterans of Korea and Vietnam. They often found themselves in the same duty stations during the thirty years they spent in the Corps. One day, many years back, when Fred was telling one of his experiences, I...

  • Memorial Day

Cathie Sibley, La Bella Amore Italian Bistro|May 24, 2014

Most of you who know me or have been to my restaurant are aware that I have a son who is active duty in the United States Air Force and has just re-enlisted for his third tour of duty. Due to the sensitive nature of his work I cannot mention his name nor include his photo in this article; however, that does not diminish my pride in him. When holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day come around each year I am especially proud of my son for his dedicated service to our country. When he was...

  • Forde Shorts

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 71|May 24, 2014

Fire! – On June 5, fire fighters from Kern, Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties, LA city, the U.S. Forest Service, and Cal Fire will conduct a nighttime "Brite Lake Helicopter Roundup" to practice loading water at Brite Lake and dropping it on a real fire on Cummings Mountain. "This is a huge thing," Kern Fire Pilot Scott Beck said at the Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District board meeting May 21. "It's an honor to be asked to participate. No one else in the world does this." Campers a...

  • American Legion Auxilary

    Mary Clyde, wordsmith|May 10, 2014

Hip Hip Hooray! They're Coming Home! A problem has arisen as a result of the drastic cuts the government has chosen to make by discharging great numbers of our military: coming home may not be as exciting as it used to be. Of course, coming home to family has got to be one of the greatest feeling in the world to both military personnel and their families. At some point a cold hard fact rears its ugly head for many: You don't have a job once you get home! OMGG (oh, my goodness gracious), what do...

  • Memorial Day and Memories

    Mary Clyde, Wordsmith|May 10, 2014

Your writer remembers (years ago) when Memorial Day (before it became just another three-day weekend celebrated on the last Monday in May rather than May 30 as it had been for years) was set aside for special events and services honoring our various branches of military who had died. It was a big deal. In more recent times it seems that we just get too busy to remember what Memorial Day really is all about. But, if you ask someone who has served their country, it still is a big deal to honor the...

  • Easter and the Healing of Wounded Souls

Father Wes Clare, St. Judes Church|Apr 12, 2014

This season, as our culture focuses on bunnies laying chocolate eggs and the festive reflections of springtime, is a powerful reminder of hope. It emerges to bless any soul in need of healing, including our warriors touched by the challenges of combat operations. In the course of our lives; any one of us can face personal trauma. For our veterans, trauma from combat brings the conflicting feelings of grief, anger, embarrassment and pride. The grief and anger often comes from the loss of fellow...

  • The Dash-80 rollover

Tina Fisher Forde, The Forde Files No 67|Mar 29, 2014

I was sad and upset when the federal sequester of funds targeted things the public loves, like veterans memorials, national parks and especially the Navy/Marine Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron and the Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team. These exciting teams once again are giving the taxpayers their money's worth at air shows around the country. The Blue Angels performed at Lancaster's Fox Field at the Los Angeles County Air Show on Mar. 21-22. I was not able to attend, but our...

They also built her three dogs a house with awning to protect them from the elements. Everyone had a pre-assigned task, including the three children that were there with their parents. This once-a-year event is sponsored by...
